Chapter 9 - The Woman Behind the Betrayal

The name echoed through the room.

"Clara."

Dante’s voice was barely a whisper.

But I heard it.

And from the look on his face, I knew.

This wasn’t just a name.

This was a wound.

The woman standing behind Marco slowly stepped into the light.

She looked calm.

Too calm.

She was in her early thirties, wearing a dark coat, her hair tied back, a small scar near her jaw.

She wasn’t afraid.

Not of Dante.

Not of the gun pointed at her.

Not of the anger filling the room.

Because she already knew what everyone else was about to discover.

She had been waiting for this moment.

"Dante."

The way she said his name made my stomach tighten.

Not because it was familiar.

Because it sounded intimate.

Like someone who had said it many times before.

Dante lowered his weapon slightly.

"Why?"

One word.

But it carried years of betrayal.

Clara looked at him.

"I tried to stop it."

Dante laughed quietly.

A cold laugh.

"You tried to stop it?"

His eyes moved to Marco.

"Then why are you standing beside him?"

Marco smiled.

"Because she finally understood who the real enemy was."

Dante’s expression darkened.

"No."

He looked at Clara.

"You were there."

The room became silent.

I looked at Dante.

"What does he mean?"

Clara didn’t answer.

Dante stepped forward.

"You were there the night Alessandro disappeared."

My father froze.

I looked at him.

"You knew her?"

Alessandro’s face changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

"Clara..."

She looked at him.

"Hello, Alessandro."

The way she said his name made my father step back.

Like he had just seen a memory come alive.

"Who is she?"

Nobody answered.

Again.

The silence.

The endless secrets.

I was done.

"Someone needs to start talking."

My voice cut through the room.

Everyone looked at me.

"I’m tired of walking into rooms where everyone knows the truth except me."

Clara looked at me.

And for the first time, her expression changed.

Not fear.

Sadness.

"You look like her."

I frowned.

"Who?"

Clara looked at the photograph on the table.

"Isabella."

My mother.

The woman I barely remembered.

My fingers tightened.

"You knew my mother?"

Clara nodded.

"She saved my life."

The answer surprised me.

Dante looked at Clara.

"Then why did you help destroy hers?"

Clara closed her eyes.

"I didn’t."

Marco laughed.

"That’s what she tells herself."

Dante turned toward him.

"You brought her here."

"Because you needed to know."

Marco walked deeper into the room.

"You have spent ten years believing Victor was the only person responsible."

He looked at me.

"But the truth is much closer."

I felt cold.

"Closer?"

Marco nodded.

"Someone inside this family helped him."

Dante’s eyes narrowed.

"Who?"

Marco smiled.

"You still don't understand."

He pointed at the photograph.

"Look carefully."

I picked it up.

The same picture.

My father.

My mother.

Me.

The scratched-out face.

Marco walked closer.

"The person who betrayed Alessandro wasn't just trying to take the empire."

He tapped the photograph.

"They were trying to erase one specific child."

My breathing slowed.

"Me."

Marco nodded.

"Yes."

Dante stepped between us.

"Enough."

Marco ignored him.

"Because if Luciana Moretti survived, everything Victor built would collapse."

The name still felt strange.

Like wearing someone else’s clothes.

Dante looked at me.

"Elena..."

"No."

I shook my head.

"I need to know."

He stopped.

Marco smiled.

"That’s why I brought Clara."

Clara looked uncomfortable for the first time.

Dante noticed.

"What did you tell her?"

Marco didn’t answer.

Dante’s expression changed.

"You used her."

Clara looked away.

And that was enough.

Dante understood.

"You threatened her."

Marco smiled.

"Everyone has a weakness."

My father stepped forward.

"You always were a coward."

Marco’s face hardened.

The first real emotion he showed.

Anger.

"You think you’re better than me?"

Alessandro stared at him.

"You burned an entire family because you wanted power."

"No."

Marco stepped closer.

"I burned it because you refused to give it to me."

The room exploded with tension.

Old hatred.

Old betrayal.

Old wounds finally opening.

I looked at Clara.

"Why are you here?"

She looked at me.

"Because you deserve the truth."

"Then tell me."

She took a breath.

"The night of the fire..."

Everyone became silent.

"I was there."

My heart dropped.

"What?"

Clara nodded.

"I saw what happened."

Dante immediately looked at her.

"Why didn’t you tell me?"

Her eyes filled with regret.

"Because I was afraid."

"Of Victor?"

She looked at Dante.

"No."

A pause.

"Of you."

Dante froze.

I watched him.

For once, he had no answer.

Clara continued.

"After the fire, I found Alessandro."

My father looked down.

"He asked me to protect the girls."

"The girls?"

I whispered.

Clara nodded.

"You and Sofia."

I looked at my father.

"You knew Sofia was alive."

His silence hurt.

"I knew someone was protecting her."

"Who?"

Clara looked at Marco.

Everyone followed her eyes.

Marco smiled.

"Finally."

Dante’s hand tightened around his weapon.

"You."

Marco didn’t deny it.

"I saved Sofia."

My father stared at him.

"Why?"

Marco’s smile disappeared.

"Because unlike you, Alessandro, I knew what was coming."

Nobody moved.

Then Marco reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Old.

Damaged.

Burned at the edges.

"I found this with Sofia."

My heart raced.

"What is it?"

Marco looked at me.

"A letter from your mother."

The room went silent.

My mother.

The woman who supposedly died.

The woman whose truth had been hidden from me.

I stepped forward.

"Give it to me."

Marco held it tighter.

"Not yet."

Dante immediately raised his weapon.

"Give her the letter."

Marco looked amused.

"You still think you’re in control."

Then he turned toward me.

"Before you read this, you need to know one thing."

My hands shook.

"What?"

Marco’s expression became serious.

"Your mother didn’t die in the fire."

The room stopped.

I couldn’t breathe.

My father closed his eyes.

Dante looked at him.

And I knew.

He already knew.

I looked at Alessandro.

"Dad."

His silence was an answer.

My entire body went cold.

"Where is she?"

Nobody spoke.

Then Clara whispered:

"She’s alive."

The floor disappeared beneath me.

A woman I had mourned my entire life.

A woman I thought I lost.

Was still somewhere.

Waiting.

Marco slowly handed me the envelope.

But before my fingers touched it, Dante’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed instantly.

"What is it?"

He answered.

Only listened.

Then his eyes moved toward me.

The fear returned.

"Dante?"

He lowered the phone.

His voice was barely audible.

"Elena..."

I stepped closer.

"What happened?"

He looked at the message he had received.

May you like

And the name on the screen made him whisper:

"Your mother just sent a location."
