Chapter 11 - The Betrayal Behind the Door

The sentence ended halfway.
The ink stopped.
But the meaning was already clear.
I stared at the paper.
My hands went cold.
Because I knew that handwriting.
I had seen it on the old documents.
On the hidden files.
On the letters my father kept.
Alessandro Moretti.
My father.
The man everyone said was betrayed.
The man everyone said was killed.
The man who had spent ten years hiding from the truth.
Dante noticed my expression.
"What does it say?"
I couldn’t answer.
My eyes stayed on the final line.
Elena, if you found this letter, it means your mother failed to tell you the truth about the night I died.
My father had written those words.
Not someone pretending to be him.
Not someone copying his handwriting.
Him.
A message meant for me.
A truth he wanted me to find.
I turned the paper over.
Nothing.
Only one small mark in the corner.
A symbol.
The same broken Moretti crest.
Dante saw it.
His face changed.
"What?"
He stepped closer.
I handed him the letter.
He read it.
Slowly.
Then his expression hardened.
"What is it?"
Dante didn’t answer.
"Dante."
He looked at me.
"Your father didn’t die because Victor found him."
The room went silent.
I felt my heartbeat.
"Then why?"
Dante looked at Alessandro’s handwriting.
"Because someone let Victor inside."
My breath stopped.
Someone close.
Someone trusted.
Someone who knew everything.
The words from Sofia’s letter came back.
The person who betrayed us is still protecting Elena.
I looked around the room.
At Dante.
At the old photographs.
At the secrets.
Everything pointed to one person.
But I didn’t want to believe it.
"Who?"
Dante remained silent.
That was enough.
"No."
My voice shook.
"No, don’t do this again."
Dante looked at me.
"Elena..."
"Everyone keeps looking at each other like they know something I don’t."
I stepped back.
"If there is someone who betrayed my family, say the name."
Dante closed his eyes.
Then he said:
"Your father."
The world stopped.
I stared at him.
"What?"
Dante looked like he hated saying it.
"Alessandro wasn’t only hiding from Victor."
He looked toward the empty hallway.
"He was hiding from the consequences of his own choices."
I shook my head.
"No."
My father.
The man who raised me.
The man who sang to me.
The man who promised he would always protect me.
"No."
Dante stepped closer.
"I don’t know the whole truth."
"Then why say it?"
"Because I saw something ten years ago."
My anger faded slightly.
"What?"
Dante looked away.
"The night of the fire."
The words felt heavy.
"I arrived after the explosion."
I froze.
"You were there?"
He nodded.
"I saw your father."
"And?"
"He was alive."
My eyes widened.
"What?"
Dante’s voice became quieter.
"He was standing outside the house."
My breathing changed.
"Then why did everyone think he died?"
"Because minutes later..."
He stopped.
"Minutes later what?"
Dante looked at me.
"The house burned."
Silence.
My mind tried to understand.
Failed.
"My father was alive."
"Yes."
"And you saw him?"
"Yes."
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
Pain crossed his face.
"Because when I went back..."
He paused.
"He was gone."
The room felt colder.
"Gone?"
Dante nodded.
"Someone took him."
I looked at the letter again.
The truth wasn’t simple.
It never was.
My father wasn’t just a victim.
My mother wasn’t just a survivor.
Dante wasn’t just a protector.
Everyone was hiding something.
Then the front door opened.
Slowly.
All three of us turned.
My father stepped into the room.
Alessandro.
Alive.
Again.
But this time, something was different.
He looked afraid.
Not of us.
Of what we had found.
His eyes moved to the letter in Dante’s hand.
"You weren’t supposed to read that."
I stared.
"You wrote it."
He said nothing.
"Dad."
The word felt strange now.
He looked at me.
"I was trying to protect you."
I laughed.
A broken laugh.
"That’s everyone’s excuse."
Alessandro lowered his head.
"I made mistakes."
"Did you betray us?"
The question came directly.
No hesitation.
No softness.
My father looked at me.
And for the first time...
I saw guilt.
Not confusion.
Not sadness.
Guilt.
My stomach dropped.
"Dad."
He took a breath.
"I opened the door."
The words destroyed the room.
Dante immediately reached for his weapon.
I couldn’t move.
"You?"
Alessandro nodded.
"I thought I was saving you."
My voice became a whisper.
"Saving me?"
He looked at me.
"Victor threatened Sofia."
My sister.
"He said if I didn't give him access, he would kill her."
I stared.
"So you let him in."
Alessandro’s eyes filled.
"I thought I could control him."
Dante laughed bitterly.
"You always thought you were smarter than everyone."
Alessandro looked at him.
"I was wrong."
The admission hurt.
Because it was honest.
The kind of honesty that came too late.
"I opened the door."
He looked at me.
"But I didn’t know Victor planned to burn everything."
My eyes filled.
"Everyone lost someone because of your choice."
He nodded.
"I know."
The silence was unbearable.
Then another sound came from outside.
A car.
Multiple cars.
Dante immediately turned toward the window.
His instincts changed.
The mafia boss returned.
"Everyone get down."
A second later, the glass shattered.
Gunfire.
Chaos.
Dante grabbed my hand and pulled me behind the wall.
My father moved toward the hallway.
"No."
I grabbed him.
"Don’t."
He looked at me.
For one second, he was just my father.
"I have to fix this."
Then he disappeared.
Dante looked through the window.
"They found us."
I looked at him.
"Victor?"
He shook his head.
"No."
Another bullet hit the wall.
Dante’s expression changed.
"Someone else."
The shooting stopped.
Too suddenly.
Dante raised his weapon.
The front door opened.
Footsteps entered.
Slow.
Confident.
A woman appeared in the doorway.
I recognized her immediately.
The photograph.
The letters.
The missing years.
My mother.
Isabella.
She looked at me.
Tears filled her eyes.
"Elena."
I couldn’t speak.
Ten years.
A lifetime.
Gone in one second.
She took one step forward.
Then stopped.
Because behind her...
Someone else walked in.
Someone holding a gun.
Someone I knew.
May you like
Someone who had been protecting me since the beginning.
And Dante whispered the name of the person who had been hiding the final secret...
