Chapter 2 - The Name Buried in the Past

The name tag slipped from the guard’s fingers and hit the marble floor.
"Elena Valenti."
Dante Moretti froze.
The room disappeared.
The voices around him disappeared.
Even the pain in his knee disappeared.
Because that name belonged to a woman who was supposed to be gone.
I watched his expression change.
The cold confidence vanished.
The arrogance vanished.
For the first time since I had entered the Silver Thorn Club, Dante Moretti looked like a man who had just seen a ghost.
Nobody noticed the small things.
They only saw powerful people.
They saw the mafia boss.
They saw the waitress who knocked him down.
But I saw something else.
A man remembering something he had spent years trying to bury.
Dante picked up the name tag himself.
His fingers moved slowly across the scratched letters on the back.
Never Forget Her.
Those words weren’t meant for him.
They were meant for me.
But the moment he saw them, I knew he understood.
"You’re not Elena Valenti."
His voice was quieter now.
Almost careful.
I looked away.
"That’s my name."
"No."
Dante stepped closer.
His men immediately became alert.
But he raised one hand.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because Dante Moretti had changed.
The same man who had been ready to punish me minutes earlier was now standing in front of me like he was afraid of the answer.
"You died."
The words hit harder than I expected.
I forced myself not to react.
People always said the same thing.
You died.
You disappeared.
You were gone.
But nobody ever asked why.
"I survived."
Dante stared at me.
"That’s not possible."
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was exactly what everyone had said.
Impossible.
That was the word people used when they didn’t want to face the truth.
I reached down and picked up the broken glass from the floor.
The sharp edge cut into my finger.
I didn’t care.
Dante noticed.
His eyes dropped to my hand.
"You’re bleeding."
"I’ve had worse."
That answer made him look at me differently.
Not like a waitress.
Not like an enemy.
Like someone trying to put together a puzzle with missing pieces.
Ten years ago, Dante Moretti had been different.
At least, that was what I remembered.
Before the suits.
Before the empire.
Before people whispered his name like it belonged to a monster.
Back then, he was just Dante.
The man who promised my family he would protect us.
The man who promised my father he would keep his word.
The man who disappeared when we needed him most.
And the man I blamed for everything.
"You knew my father."
The room became silent again.
Dante didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
One of his men looked between us.
"Boss, who is she?"
Dante didn’t take his eyes off me.
"Everyone leaves."
Nobody questioned him.
That was the power of Dante Moretti.
Within seconds, the dining room emptied.
The guards.
The wealthy guests.
Everyone.
Until only Dante and I remained.
Two people standing in the aftermath of a battle nobody expected.
He placed the name tag on the table.
"How long have you known I was here?"
I looked at him.
"I didn’t."
"Liar."
His voice wasn’t angry.
It was certain.
"You came to the Silver Thorn."
I stayed quiet.
"You took a job in the one place I spend every Friday night."
"I needed money."
"You’re a trained fighter."
"I needed money."
"You knew exactly who I was."
I looked at him.
"And you didn’t know who I was."
That sentence hit him.
Because it was true.
Dante Moretti could find anyone.
He could uncover secrets buried under years of lies.
But he had never found me.
And that bothered him.
More than the punch.
More than the humiliation.
More than anything.
"Who told you I would be here?"
Nobody.
I had found him myself.
I had followed the rumors.
The stories.
The man who became powerful after my father died.
The man who built an empire while my family fell apart.
I wanted answers.
But I also wanted revenge.
At least, I thought I did.
Until I saw him tonight.
Until I saw the look in his eyes.
Because Dante Moretti didn’t look like the villain from my memories.
He looked like someone carrying his own punishment.
"I came here because I wanted to see if the rumors were true."
"What rumors?"
I looked at the expensive room around us.
The luxury.
The guards.
The fear.
"That you became exactly what everyone said you would become."
Dante’s jaw tightened.
"And?"
I paused.
"And I’m still deciding."
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then something unexpected happened.
Dante smiled.
Not the arrogant smile from before.
A tired one.
A painful one.
"You always talked like that."
I frowned.
"What?"
"Your father hated that about you."
My heart stopped.
Because I never told him about my father.
Not tonight.
Not ever.
Dante looked away.
"He used to say you were too stubborn for your own good."
I felt the anger return.
"You remember him."
"Every day."
"Then where were you?"
The question came out before I could stop it.
The room became colder.
"Where were you when he died?"
Dante looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw something I never expected.
Regret.
"I tried to get there."
"Try harder."
The words came out sharp.
His expression changed.
"I was too late."
"No."
I stepped closer.
"You were gone."
Dante didn’t answer.
Because he knew.
That was the truth.
The one thing money couldn’t erase.
The one thing power couldn’t fix.
Silence filled the room.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression immediately changed.
Not fear.
Concern.
He answered.
"Speak."
A voice came through.
I couldn’t hear everything.
Only pieces.
"Boss..."
"Found..."
"Old records..."
Dante’s eyes moved toward me.
"What records?"
The person on the other end said something.
And whatever it was made Dante’s face lose color.
"Send me the file."
He ended the call.
I watched him carefully.
"What was that?"
"Nothing."
I almost smiled.
"People like you always say that right before everything becomes something."
Dante ignored the comment.
He picked up my name tag.
"Your father left something behind."
I froze.
"What?"
"A file."
My breathing changed.
"No."
Dante looked at me.
"You know about it."
I didn’t answer.
Because I did.
The file.
The reason my father died.
The reason I disappeared.
The reason someone had spent ten years making sure nobody found me.
"Dante..."
It was the first time I said his name.
Not Moretti.
Not boss.
Just Dante.
His eyes lifted immediately.
Because he remembered.
Only one person used to say his name like that.
My mother.
Before she died.
Before everything fell apart.
"Where did you hear about the file?"
I stepped back.
"I don’t know what you’re talking about."
But Dante saw it.
The hesitation.
The fear.
The tiny mistake.
He had spent his life reading people.
And he had just read me.
"You’re protecting someone."
"No."
"Then you’re afraid of someone."
I said nothing.
That was enough.
Dante moved toward the private office at the back of the club.
"Wait here."
I followed.
"No."
He turned.
"Elena."
The way he said my name stopped me.
Not because it was threatening.
Because it sounded like he had been waiting ten years to say it again.
"You don’t understand what you’re involved in."
I laughed quietly.
"You think I don’t know?"
"No."
His voice lowered.
"I think you know exactly what you’re involved in."
Before I could respond, the lights in the club flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then every screen in the room turned black.
Dante immediately reached for the weapon hidden beneath his jacket.
His guards rushed back inside.
But nobody came through the door.
Nobody made a sound.
Then one of the security monitors turned on.
A single video file appeared.
Recorded ten years earlier.
Dante stared at the screen.
Because he recognized the room.
I stared at the screen.
Because I recognized the voice.
A man appeared.
My father.
Alive.
And the first words he said were:
"Elena, if you are watching this, it means Dante Moretti failed to protect you..."
Dante stepped closer.
The screen continued playing.
May you like
And then my father said the one sentence that made Dante completely freeze...
"Your mother was never the person you thought she was."
