Chapter 6 - The Woman They Framed

Madison didn't resist.

Dominic did.

Not physically.

With one sentence.

“You arrest her, Elliot wins.”

The federal agent ignored him.

Rebecca Shaw stepped forward.

“This operation was conducted with my authorization.”

That stopped everything.

The warrant had been issued using evidence submitted hours earlier.

Evidence showing Madison had created the Hale Family Foundation accounts.

Her electronic signature appeared on the documents.

Her employee credentials authorized transfers.

Her home IP address appeared repeatedly.

It was devastating.

And fabricated.

Shaw prevented Madison's immediate arrest by assuming jurisdiction over the investigation.

But the danger wasn't over.

Someone inside law enforcement was helping Elliot.

Madison finally understood the scale.

“This is why Dad died.”

Dominic nodded.

“He couldn't know who to trust.”

Madison looked at him.

“Neither can we.”

Dominic's expression changed.

“You can trust me.”

The words were quiet.

Madison held his gaze.

“Can I?”

“Yes.”

“Even if protecting me costs you everything?”

“Yes.”

No hesitation.

Something inside her shifted.

The feared Dominic Moretti wasn't asking her to trust his reputation.

He was asking her to judge his actions.

So she did.

He had protected Ryan.

Protected Elaine.

Turned over evidence implicating his own father.

Allowed federal investigators into his company.

Never once asked Madison to hide what she found.

“Yes,” she said.

Dominic frowned slightly.

“Yes what?”

“I trust you.”

For once, Dominic Moretti had no answer.

The next forty-eight hours became a race.

Madison reconstructed the fraudulent documents.

She discovered her credentials had been copied from a workstation in Elliot's executive suite.

Security logs had been altered.

But one thing Elliot couldn't alter was physical access.

Every Moretti employee used encrypted building badges.

Madison compared badge records.

Elliot's badge showed him entering his office.

But another badge entered minutes later.

D.M.

Dominic Moretti.

Dominic stared at the record.

“I wasn't there.”

“Then someone cloned your badge.”

Madison searched deeper.

The cloned badge had been created by a security administrator.

Victor Dane.

One of Dominic's most trusted men.

Madison recognized him immediately.

He had been standing in the conference room the morning she arrived late.

The third man.

Quiet.

Watchful.

Always near Dominic.

Dominic looked genuinely wounded.

“Victor has been with me twelve years.”

Madison remembered Elliot's warning.

Mercy and loyalty.

Sometimes betrayal came from the person trusted most.

Dominic summoned Marco privately.

They developed a plan.

They would pretend the ledger contained one final page identifying every VANE participant.

Victor would hear about it.

If he was working with Elliot, he would react.

That evening Dominic deliberately told Marco within Victor's hearing that Madison was moving the ledger to a secure location.

Madison left carrying a briefcase.

Victor watched.

Twenty minutes later, a car followed her.

Dominic's team followed the car.

It led directly to Elliot.

The trap closed.

Federal agents moved in.

Elliot tried to escape through a service exit.

Victor attempted to destroy his phone.

Both were arrested.

Nobody celebrated.

Madison stood outside the building as agents escorted Elliot toward a vehicle.

He saw her.

Stopped.

“You think this ends with me?”

Madison said nothing.

“You're exactly like Thomas.”

That hurt.

But not the way Elliot intended.

Madison straightened.

“Thank you.”

Elliot's expression twisted.

“You should be terrified.”

“I was.”

Madison looked at Dominic standing behind her.

“I'm not anymore.”

Elliot was taken away.

Victor followed.

The investigation exploded across Chicago.

Public officials resigned.

Contractors were charged.

Two retired police commanders were arrested.

Moretti Holdings lost contracts, investors, and nearly a quarter of its value because of its historical connection to VANE.

Dominic voluntarily opened the company's records.

His board called him insane.

He did it anyway.

Weeks passed.

Madison's name was formally cleared.

Ryan recovered.

Elaine began therapy for grief she had buried for eighteen years.

And Thomas Hale's death was reopened as a homicide investigation.

One evening, Madison returned to the forty-seventh floor.

Dominic was alone.

He stood near the windows.

“No bodyguards?” she asked.

“Marco is outside.”

“Of course he is.”

Dominic smiled.

Madison had never seen him smile much.

She liked it more than she should.

“I came to resign.”

The smile disappeared.

Dominic turned.

“Why?”

“Because everyone thinks I'm getting special treatment.”

“Are you?”

“You brought me coffee yesterday.”

“That scandal will destroy us.”

Madison laughed.

Dominic stepped closer.

“You don't have to leave.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

She looked at him.

“Because I don't know what I am here anymore.”

His voice softened.

“What do you want to be?”

Madison's heartbeat changed.

She could have answered.

She almost did.

Then Dominic's phone rang.

Marco.

Dominic answered.

His expression changed immediately.

“When?”

He listened.

“Where?”

Madison felt cold.

“What happened?”

Dominic ended the call.

“They found your father's car.”

Madison stopped breathing.

“After eighteen years?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Lake Michigan.”

Madison stared.

Dominic continued.

“The driver's side was empty.”

Her heart slammed against her ribs.

“What does that mean?”

Dominic looked at her.

“They found human remains in the passenger seat.”

Madison whispered, “Whose?”

Dominic's phone vibrated again.

A photograph arrived from investigators.

He opened it.

Madison saw the object recovered beside the remains.

May you like

A Moretti family ring.

It had belonged to Dominic's father.
