Chapter 5 - The Ledger

Elaine had lied.
Again.
Madison confronted her the moment they returned.
“You said you didn't know what happened to Dad's evidence.”
“I didn't know whether it still existed.”
“That isn't the same thing.”
“No.”
Elaine removed an old leather-bound ledger from beneath the lining of her handbag.
Madison stared.
“You had it this entire time?”
“Your father gave it to me the night before he disappeared.”
Dominic opened it.
Names.
Dates.
Account numbers.
Payments.
Judges.
Contractors.
Police officials.
And one name appearing repeatedly:
ELLIOT CRANE.
Dominic turned pages.
Then stopped.
Beside Elliot's name was another.
SALVATORE MORETTI.
Madison watched Dominic.
“This proves your father was involved.”
“Yes.”
He didn't deny it.
Elaine shook her head.
Dominic did.
Later entries showed Salvatore had discovered unauthorized payments.
Then an instruction:
FREEZE VANE.
AUDIT CRANE.
PROTECT HALE.
Dominic looked up.
Elaine whispered, “Thomas was right.”
Salvatore had tried to shut VANE down.
Elliot had framed him before he could.
The revelation didn't make Salvatore innocent.
Dominic knew that.
His father had built the system that made Elliot possible.
But Thomas hadn't died because he betrayed Salvatore.
He died because he discovered Elliot.
Madison looked at her mother.
“Why didn't you give this to the police?”
“I was terrified.”
“For eighteen years?”
“Yes.”
Elaine began crying.
Madison wanted to be angry.
Instead she saw a young widow with two children being told one of Chicago's most dangerous families would kill them.
Fear had shaped every decision afterward.
Dominic closed the ledger.
“We take this to federal authorities.”
Ryan laughed bitterly.
“You trust them?”
“Not all of them.”
“Then who?”
Dominic named Assistant U.S. Attorney Rebecca Shaw.
Madison knew the name.
Shaw had built her career prosecuting public corruption.
Dominic called her directly.
Madison stared.
“You have a federal prosecutor's private number?”
“Long story.”
Shaw agreed to meet.
But before they could leave, Dominic received an alert.
Moretti Holdings' servers were being wiped remotely.
Elliot.
Madison ran to the secure terminal.
“Disconnect external access.”
The IT director hesitated.
Dominic said, “Do what she says.”
Madison worked for forty frantic minutes.
She isolated the servers and preserved most of the transaction history.
Then she noticed something.
A scheduled transfer.
$32 million.
Midnight tomorrow.
Destination hidden behind several shell corporations.
“If this executes, Elliot disappears,” she said.
“Can you stop it?”
“Yes.”
She looked closer.
“But I don't think we should.”
Dominic understood.
“Follow the money.”
Madison nodded.
For the first time, they weren't merely reacting.
They had bait.
Over the next day, Madison and Dominic worked side by side.
The distance between them changed.
Dominic brought her coffee without asking how she took it.
It was exactly right.
She noticed.
“How did you know?”
“You've worked here three years.”
“You notice everyone's coffee?”
“No.”
Their eyes met.
Madison looked away first.
She had spent weeks fearing him.
Now she was beginning to understand that Dominic's terrifying reputation concealed something more complicated.
He could be ruthless.
But his ruthlessness had rules.
He protected employees.
He refused to threaten families.
He had quietly paid medical bills for workers injured on construction projects his father once controlled.
The more Madison learned, the less he resembled the monster she had imagined.
And the more dangerous her feelings became.
That evening, Rebecca Shaw arrived.
She reviewed the ledger.
“This could dismantle half the network.”
“Half?” Madison asked.
Shaw pointed to several coded initials.
“These people aren't all identified.”
Dominic looked at one set.
D.M.
Madison's stomach tightened.
Shaw noticed.
“Dominic Moretti.”
Dominic remained calm.
“Possibly.”
Madison looked at him.
“You?”
“No.”
“Can you prove that?”
Dominic met her eyes.
“No.”
Shaw closed the ledger.
“Until we know, you're both potential witnesses. And Dominic, you're potentially a target.”
Madison almost laughed.
“He's already a target.”
Shaw looked at her.
“So are you.”
The scheduled transfer became their opportunity.
Madison created a controlled pathway that would allow the money to move far enough to expose the recipient.
At 11:58 the next night, everyone watched the screen.
11:59.
Midnight.
TRANSFER INITIATED.
The money moved through Delaware.
Then the Cayman Islands.
Then Switzerland.
Finally Chicago.
Madison frowned.
“It came back.”
“To where?” Dominic asked.
She opened the final destination.
Her blood turned cold.
The account belonged to a charitable trust.
HALE FAMILY FOUNDATION.
Ryan stared.
“We don't have a foundation.”
Elaine whispered, “Yes, we do.”
Madison turned.
“What?”
Elaine looked devastated.
“Your father created it.”
“When?”
“The week before he died.”
Madison opened the account ownership records.
The beneficiary wasn't Thomas.
It wasn't Elaine.
It wasn't Ryan.
It was Madison.
Thirty-two million dollars had just been transferred into an account legally controlled by her.
Dominic stared at the screen.
Shaw stood slowly.
Someone had just made Madison look like the mastermind behind VANE.
Then the conference-room doors opened.
Federal agents entered.
May you like
The lead agent displayed a warrant.
“Madison Hale, you're under arrest.”
