Chapter 4 - What Happened to Thomas Hale

Dominic didn't move.

Madison's mother, Elaine Hale, looked smaller than Madison remembered.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

As though eighteen years of silence had finally become too heavy to carry.

Madison approached her.

“You told me Dad left.”

Elaine's eyes filled with tears.

“I was trying to keep you alive.”

“By making me hate him?”

“By making you stop looking for him.”

Madison stepped back.

The answer hurt more than she expected.

Dominic remained silent.

Elaine looked at him.

“You have his eyes.”

“My father's?”

“Yes.”

“Tell me what happened.”

Elaine sat.

Eighteen years earlier, Thomas Hale had discovered that VANE was being expanded beyond anything he had agreed to create.

He had designed financial structures for Salvatore Moretti believing they were used to conceal Moretti assets from rival criminal organizations.

Then he discovered politicians, judges, contractors, and police officials were being bribed.

Thomas wanted out.

More importantly, he copied evidence.

“He was going to federal authorities,” Elaine said.

“What happened?” Madison whispered.

“Someone found out.”

“Salvatore?”

Elaine looked toward Dominic.

“I believed so.”

Dominic accepted the accusation without defending his father.

“Did you see him order Thomas killed?”

“No.”

“Then why believe it?”

“Elliot told me.”

Everyone went silent.

Madison stared.

“Elliot?”

“He came to our house the night your father disappeared. He told me Thomas had betrayed the Morettis. He said Salvatore would come for all of us if I asked questions.”

Dominic's eyes narrowed.

“Convenient.”

Elaine understood immediately.

“You think Elliot lied.”

“I think Elliot has spent seventeen years working inside my company while secretly accessing a financial network Thomas designed.”

Elaine covered her mouth.

Madison suddenly saw the entire trap.

Elliot had blamed Salvatore.

Elaine had hidden.

Thomas's evidence disappeared.

And Elliot stayed close to the Moretti empire.

“What if Dad discovered Elliot was stealing?” Madison asked.

Dominic looked at her.

“That would explain why Elliot needed him silenced.”

At 11:42, Madison received another message.

Ryan's location.

An abandoned printing warehouse near the river.

Midnight.

They left immediately.

Dominic insisted Madison wear a tiny transmitter.

“You stay where I can hear you.”

She looked at him.

“You're worried.”

“Yes.”

The direct answer surprised her.

“About Ryan?”

Dominic held her gaze.

“About both of you.”

Madison said nothing.

At 11:59, she entered the warehouse.

Alone.

Her limp was less severe after medication, but every step hurt.

Ryan sat under a hanging industrial lamp.

His hands were tied.

His face was bruised.

“Madison!”

She rushed toward him.

A man stepped from the shadows.

Not Elliot.

Madison recognized him from the garage.

“Drive.”

She held it up.

“Release my brother.”

The man smiled.

“That wasn't the deal.”

“Yes, it was.”

“No. The deal was that you brought the drive.”

Ryan shouted.

“Don't give it to him!”

The man struck Ryan's chair, sending it sideways.

Madison flinched.

“Stop!”

She threw the drive across the floor.

The man picked it up.

He inserted it into a laptop.

Nothing happened.

His expression changed.

“Password.”

Madison looked at him.

“You didn't ask for one.”

He walked toward her.

Dominic's voice came through her hidden earpiece.

Stay calm.

The man grabbed Madison's arm.

“Password.”

She stared at him.

“Thomas.”

He typed it.

Access denied.

Madison smiled faintly.

“Wrong Thomas.”

The warehouse lights suddenly went out.

Men shouted.

Madison dropped.

Dominic's team entered from three directions.

No gunfire.

No dramatic chaos.

Only fast, controlled movement.

Within seconds, the attacker was restrained.

Dominic appeared beside Madison.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

He went straight to Ryan and cut his restraints.

Ryan looked at Dominic with open hostility.

“You shouldn't have brought her here.”

Dominic's expression hardened.

“She came for you.”

Ryan looked at Madison.

Shame crossed his face.

“I'm sorry.”

Madison knelt beside him.

“For what?”

Ryan's eyes filled.

“I knew.”

“Knew what?”

“About Dad.”

Madison stopped breathing.

Ryan explained.

He had been fifteen when Thomas disappeared.

Old enough to remember the final night.

Thomas had given Ryan a key.

He told him never to use it unless someone came looking for Madison.

Ryan had kept it for eighteen years.

When Madison began asking questions about VANE, Ryan realized history was repeating itself.

“Where's the key?”

Ryan looked at Dominic.

Then at Madison.

“Safe.”

“What does it open?”

“I don't know.”

The captured attacker suddenly laughed.

Dominic turned.

“What?”

The man looked at Ryan.

“You really think Elliot needs that key anymore?”

Ryan's face changed.

The attacker smiled through a split lip.

“He already found the box.”

Madison's phone vibrated.

A video.

She opened it.

Elliot Crane stood inside a bank vault.

He held an old metal case.

He smiled directly into the camera.

Then he opened it.

His smile disappeared.

The case was empty.

Elliot looked at someone outside the frame.

“Where is the ledger?”

A familiar voice answered.

May you like

Madison's mother.

“I gave it to Dominic Moretti.”
