Chapter 3 - The Name Her Mother Buried

“My father abandoned us,” Madison said.

Dominic didn't respond.

Madison held up the phone.

“What does this mean?”

“I don't know.”

“You're lying.”

Dominic looked toward Marco.

“Find Ryan.”

Marco left.

Madison stepped closer.

“My father disappeared eighteen years ago. My mother said he walked out.”

Dominic's silence became unbearable.

“You know something.”

“I know a name.”

“What name?”

“Thomas Hale.”

Madison froze.

“You knew my father?”

“No.”

“But your family did.”

Dominic nodded.

Madison sat down.

The room seemed to tilt.

Thomas Hale had been a ghost in her childhood.

No photographs after she turned nine.

No birthday cards.

No phone calls.

Nothing.

Her mother had refused to discuss him.

Ryan became angry whenever Madison asked.

Eventually she stopped.

“What did he do?”

Dominic opened an encrypted archive on his laptop.

He searched.

A photograph appeared.

Madison recognized her father immediately.

Older than she remembered.

Beside him stood Dominic's father, Salvatore Moretti.

“Your father was an accountant,” Dominic said.

Madison almost laughed.

“So am I.”

“Yes.”

“For your father?”

“For several organizations.”

The implication was obvious.

Thomas had helped hide money.

Dominic opened another document.

PROJECT VANE.

Madison read the first paragraph.

Her father had designed the accounting architecture.

“That isn't possible.”

“It appears to be.”

“My mother would have known.”

“Maybe she did.”

Madison called her.

No answer.

She called again.

Still nothing.

Dominic arranged security for her mother.

Madison objected until he said quietly, “Someone has your brother.”

She stopped arguing.

They spent the afternoon reconstructing VANE.

What emerged was larger than either expected.

The network wasn't merely stealing from Moretti Holdings.

It was laundering money through charitable foundations, real-estate projects, construction companies, and municipal contracts.

Someone had resurrected Thomas Hale's system.

And Madison had accidentally discovered it.

At six that evening, Marco located Ryan's abandoned truck.

Blood was found on the steering wheel.

Madison nearly collapsed.

Dominic caught her again.

“It's not necessarily his.”

“You don't know that.”

“No.”

For once, he didn't offer false reassurance.

Madison appreciated that.

They sat alone afterward.

She noticed Dominic had not eaten.

Neither had she.

“Why did you change the company?” she asked.

He looked at her.

“Excuse me?”

“You said your father operated differently.”

Dominic leaned back.

“My mother died when I was seventeen.”

Madison waited.

“My father believed fear could prevent every kind of loss. So he accumulated power. Enemies. Money.”

“Did it work?”

“No.”

“What happened?”

“He died surrounded by people who obeyed him and nobody who loved him.”

Dominic looked toward Chicago.

“I decided I didn't want his inheritance if that was the price.”

For the first time, Madison saw the man instead of the reputation.

At 10:30, they prepared for the midnight exchange.

Dominic refused to let Madison go alone.

“They specifically said alone.”

“They also assaulted you.”

“They have Ryan.”

“And they'll have you too if you walk in unprotected.”

Madison finally agreed to carry the drive while Dominic's team remained hidden nearby.

Before leaving, Marco entered.

“Boss.”

Something in his tone changed the room.

“What?”

“We found Madison's mother.”

Madison stood.

“Where?”

“She's safe.”

Relief rushed through her.

“Thank God.”

Marco didn't look relieved.

“But?”

Marco placed an old photograph on the table.

Madison's mother stood beside Thomas Hale.

Beside them was Salvatore Moretti.

And Elliot Crane.

The photograph had been taken eighteen years ago.

On the back, someone had written:

THE NIGHT THOMAS DIED.

Madison stared at those words.

“My father didn't leave us.”

Dominic said nothing.

Madison looked up.

“He died.”

A voice came from the doorway.

“Yes.”

Madison turned.

Her mother stood there.

May you like

And the first thing she said was:

“Dominic, your father killed my husband.”
