Chapter 6 - The File That Changed Everything

The file had my daughter's name written across the front.

Lily.

Just seeing it made my chest tighten.

My daughter was upstairs at home with a babysitter.

Safe.

Sleeping.

Completely unaware that her entire life had just been turned upside down in a wedding ballroom.

I stared at the person standing near the entrance.

A woman.

Late forties.

Dark hair pulled back.

Holding the file like it was the most dangerous thing in the room.

And somehow...

Everyone recognized her.

Daniel stepped backward.

"No."

The woman looked at him.

"Yes."

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

Like she had been waiting years for this moment.

Ethan moved beside me.

"You know her?"

I looked at him.

"You don't?"

His expression changed.

And that scared me.

Because Ethan always seemed like he knew everything.

But now...

He looked surprised.

The woman walked closer.

"My name is Claire."

She stopped in front of me.

"I worked with your father."

My body went cold.

Everyone connected to my father brought another secret.

Another missing piece.

Another reason I couldn't trust the life I thought I knew.

"What is that file?" I asked.

Claire looked down at it.

"Everything your father tried to protect."

I swallowed.

"My daughter?"

Claire nodded.

"Yes."

The word hit me harder than I expected.

I looked at Daniel.

"You knew about this?"

He immediately shook his head.

"No."

But this time, I believed him.

Because he looked terrified.

Not guilty.

Terrified.

Claire opened the file.

Inside were medical records.

Documents.

Photographs.

Reports.

My eyes moved across the pages.

Then I saw the date.

The day Lily was born.

I grabbed the file.

"What am I looking at?"

Claire hesitated.

Then she said:

"The night your daughter was born wasn't the night your life changed."

She looked at Daniel.

"It was the night someone tried to take it from you."

My hands froze.

"What?"

Claire placed a document in front of me.

"Read the report."

I looked down.

At first, the words didn't make sense.

Then they did.

And I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.

There was an incident report.

A hospital security report.

A missing visitor record.

Someone had entered my hospital room the night Lily was born.

Someone who wasn't supposed to be there.

"Who?"

Nobody answered.

I looked at Daniel.

"Who came into my room?"

Daniel's eyes filled with pain.

"I don't know."

Claire looked at him.

"You know enough."

Daniel looked away.

That small movement told me everything.

He knew something.

Maybe not everything.

But something.

I turned the page.

There was a photograph attached.

A security camera image.

A person walking through the hospital hallway.

The face was blurry.

But the person was carrying something.

A folder.

My father's folder.

My heart started racing.

"Why would my father have this?"

Claire took a breath.

"Because your father discovered something about your daughter before she was born."

I shook my head.

"No."

"Emma..."

"No."

My voice became sharper.

"My father died protecting us."

Claire looked at me.

"Yes."

I froze.

"Then why does everyone keep talking like he was hiding something?"

Claire didn't answer immediately.

Then she said:

"Because he was."

The room became silent.

Even Sophia stopped crying.

I stared at Claire.

"Explain."

She looked around.

At Daniel.

At Ethan.

Then back at me.

"Your father discovered that someone inside your family was involved with a group that had been watching your family for years."

I felt a chill.

"Watching us?"

Claire nodded.

"Your father thought it started with him."

She paused.

"But then he found out they were interested in Lily."

My hands tightened around the file.

"Why?"

Claire looked at the documents.

"Because Lily wasn't just a child connected to your family."

I waited.

"What does that mean?"

Claire reached for another page.

"This."

She handed it to me.

It was a DNA report.

I stared at it.

The words blurred.

Then I saw the conclusion.

I looked up.

"No."

Daniel stepped closer.

"Emma."

I moved away.

"Don't."

Because suddenly...

I didn't want him near me.

Not because I hated him.

Because I was afraid.

Afraid that everything I believed about my daughter.

About my marriage.

About my entire life.

Was wrong.

Claire spoke softly.

"Your father discovered the truth before Lily was born."

I looked at her.

"What truth?"

She looked directly at me.

"That someone had changed your medical records."

My breathing stopped.

"What?"

"The pregnancy records."

My mind went back.

The appointments.

The tests.

The doctor visits.

The moments I trusted everyone around me.

Someone had changed them.

Someone had been inside my life.

"Who?"

Claire looked toward Daniel.

And Daniel closed his eyes.

I saw it.

The hesitation.

The fear.

The memory.

"Daniel."

He didn't respond.

"Tell me."

His voice was barely a whisper.

"It was Victoria's father."

The room went silent.

I turned slowly.

Victoria was standing near the wall.

Her face had gone pale.

"What?"

Daniel looked at her.

"I didn't know."

Victoria shook her head.

"No."

"You knew something was wrong."

"No."

"You knew your father was involved."

Victoria started crying.

"Daniel, don't do this."

My heart stopped.

Because that sentence wasn't a denial.

It was fear.

I stepped toward her.

"How much did you know?"

Victoria looked at me.

And for the first time in six years...

She looked ashamed.

"I thought it was over."

"What was over?"

She looked at Lily's file.

Then whispered:

"The reason your father disappeared."

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

"What does that mean?"

Victoria wiped her tears.

"Your father didn't die because of an accident."

My blood ran cold.

Everyone looked at her.

Daniel's face changed.

"You weren't supposed to say that."

Victoria looked at him.

"You never should have let her live a lie."

The room exploded.

Questions.

Whispers.

Shock.

But I heard only one sentence.

My father didn't die because of an accident.

I looked at Claire.

"Is that true?"

Claire didn't answer.

And that was worse.

Because silence was an answer.

I grabbed the file.

"What happened to my father?"

Claire looked toward the ballroom doors.

"Someone killed him because he was about to reveal the truth."

My entire body froze.

"Who?"

Claire opened her mouth.

But before she could speak...

The lights went out again.

This time, nobody screamed.

Everyone knew.

Something was coming.

A phone vibrated.

Then another.

Then another.

Every screen in the ballroom lit up.

A new message appeared.

Not from an unknown number.

From my father's old phone.

A phone that had been destroyed four years earlier.

The message contained only one sentence.

"Emma, if you are seeing this, it means they found Lily."

I looked at Claire.

Then Daniel.

May you like

Then Ethan.

And before anyone could move, a live location appeared beneath the message.
