Chapter 5 - The Letter I Was Never Supposed To Read

The letter shook in my hands.

Not because I was afraid of the words.

Because I was afraid I already knew them.

The handwriting belonged to me.

Every curve.

Every line.

Every small habit I had when I wrote quickly.

It was mine.

But I had no memory of writing it.

I looked at the first sentence again.

"If anything happens to me, don't trust Daniel..."

My heart sank.

The room around me disappeared.

The wedding guests.

The lights.

The music.

Everything became distant.

There was only that sentence.

And the man standing across from me.

My husband.

The man I had spent six years trying to understand.

Daniel looked like he wanted to speak.

But for the first time in our entire relationship...

He had nothing to say.

"Emma..."

I looked up.

"Don't."

My voice was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

Because silence had taken over the ballroom.

"Don't say my name like you still have the right."

Daniel flinched.

That reaction hurt.

Because a part of me still remembered the man he used to be.

The man who held my hand during our first ultrasound.

The man who danced with me in our tiny apartment when we had no money.

The man who promised me that no matter what happened, we would face it together.

But that man had disappeared.

Or maybe...

Maybe I never really knew him.

Michael stepped closer.

"Emma, you need to read the rest."

I looked at the letter.

My fingers tightened around the paper.

"What happened to me?"

Nobody answered.

I looked at Daniel.

"What happened to me?"

His eyes moved away.

And that was the answer.

Something had happened.

Something serious enough that everyone decided lying to me was better than telling me the truth.

I unfolded the letter completely.

The paper was old.

The ink was faded.

But the words were clear.

"If you are reading this, then I was wrong about trusting the people closest to me."

My breathing stopped.

"I don't know who I can trust anymore."

I continued reading.

"Daniel is not the enemy. But he is being forced to do something he doesn't want to do."

I looked up immediately.

Daniel stared at the floor.

My anger became confusion.

The letter continued.

"My father knows something about our daughter. Something he refuses to tell me."

My hands went cold.

Our daughter.

My daughter.

The child Daniel left behind.

The child he barely knew.

"What does this mean?" I whispered.

Michael looked at me.

"It means your father knew something before your daughter was born."

I shook my head.

"No."

The word came out automatically.

Because some truths are too painful to accept.

"My father loved me."

Michael didn't argue.

"I know."

"He protected me."

"I know."

"He would never hurt my daughter."

Michael looked at Daniel.

"He didn't want to hurt her."

That sentence made me look at him.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel finally spoke.

"Emma..."

I turned toward him.

"Tell me."

He swallowed.

"I didn't leave because I stopped loving you."

I laughed softly.

A broken sound.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

"Because it's true."

"Then why did you go?"

His eyes filled with regret.

"Because your father gave me a choice."

"What choice?"

Daniel looked at the letter.

Then at me.

"If I stayed with you, someone would come after you."

My stomach tightened.

"Who?"

He didn't answer.

"Who, Daniel?"

Before he could speak, Ethan interrupted.

"The people your father was investigating."

I turned toward him.

"What people?"

Ethan looked around the ballroom.

At the guests.

At the cameras.

At the exits.

Then lowered his voice.

"Not here."

I almost laughed.

"Not here?"

I held up the letter.

"My entire life has been built on secrets."

My voice broke.

"I am done leaving rooms because someone thinks the truth is too dangerous."

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Daniel.

"You left me alone."

"I know."

"You let me raise our daughter without you."

"I know."

"You let me hate you."

His eyes became wet.

"I know."

"Then tell me why."

For a long moment, he said nothing.

Then he whispered:

"Because I thought you would hate me less than you would hate yourself if you knew the truth."

I froze.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel looked at Michael.

Michael looked away.

And that scared me.

Because both of them were afraid of the same thing.

I looked down at the letter again.

There was more.

A final paragraph I hadn't noticed.

My hands trembled as I read it.

"Emma, if Daniel leaves, don't believe he abandoned you."

My eyes burned.

"He will try to make you hate him."

A tear fell onto the paper.

"Let him."

I stopped.

The words blurred.

"Because if you hate him, you will stop searching."

I looked at Daniel.

"Searching for what?"

Nobody answered.

The letter continued.

"The truth about our daughter."

My heart stopped.

"What?"

The entire ballroom went silent.

Even Daniel looked shocked.

Like he had never seen that part.

I looked at him.

"You didn't know?"

He slowly shook his head.

"No."

For the first time that night...

Daniel looked as confused as I was.

Michael stepped forward.

"Your father hid the truth from both of you."

"What truth?"

Michael took a deep breath.

"Your daughter wasn't just born into a family problem."

I stared at him.

"Then what was she born into?"

Before Michael could answer, the large screen behind us flickered again.

Everyone turned.

A new video appeared.

This time, it wasn't from the hospital.

It was from inside my old apartment.

My apartment.

Six years ago.

The night Daniel left.

I stopped breathing.

Because on the screen...

I saw myself.

Pregnant.

Crying.

Standing in the living room.

And Daniel was there.

But he wasn't leaving.

He was holding something in his hand.

Something I had never seen before.

A small black device.

Then the video showed my father walking through the door.

And he said one sentence.

A sentence that made Daniel drop the device immediately.

"She can never know that the baby isn't the only thing we saved that night."

The video froze.

And beneath the screen, a new message appeared.

"Emma, your daughter is not the secret."

I looked toward the ballroom entrance.

May you like

Because someone had just walked in holding another file.

A file with my daughter's name on it.
