Chapter 1 - The Stranger Who Took My Hand

A woman grabbed my arm in the middle of the ballroom and whispered:

"Please don't let him see you cry."

When I looked down, I found a forgotten wedding invitation hidden under my chair with my ex-husband's handwriting on the back.

But three words were written beneath his name:

"She knows everything."

I suddenly realized this wedding was never just a celebration.

I had spent the first hour of my sister Sophia’s wedding pretending I was fine.

That was the hardest part.

Not the smile.

Not the small talk.

Not even seeing the man who had destroyed my life standing twenty feet away from me wearing a perfectly tailored tuxedo and laughing like he had never broken my heart.

The hardest part was pretending that none of it mattered.

The Bellmont Grand’s top-floor ballroom looked like something from a magazine.

Crystal chandeliers hung above hundreds of white roses.

Golden lights reflected across the polished floor.

The Chicago skyline glittered through the massive windows behind the dance floor.

Everyone looked happy.

Everyone looked exactly where they were supposed to be.

Except me.

I sat alone at Table Twelve, holding a glass of champagne I had not touched.

My sister Sophia had spent two years planning this night.

She deserved perfection.

She deserved laughter.

She deserved a wedding where nobody’s past ruined her future.

So I sat quietly.

I clapped when everyone clapped.

I smiled when people looked at me.

And I ignored the one person I never thought I would see again.

Daniel.

My ex-husband.

The man who had once promised me forever.

The man who had held my hand in a hospital room when I gave birth to our daughter.

The man who had looked into my eyes and told me he would never leave.

Until he did.

He left three months after our daughter was born.

No explanation.

No goodbye.

Just a letter on the kitchen counter and an empty closet.

I still remembered the words.

"I need a different life."

That was all he gave me.

A sentence.

After everything we had built together.

After every promise.

After every night we spent talking about our future.

He chose a different life.

And somehow, that different life included my own cousin, Victoria.

The woman standing beside him now.

Victoria looked beautiful.

Of course she did.

She wore a champagne-colored gown that probably cost more than my first car.

Her blonde hair was perfectly styled.

Her hand rested comfortably on Daniel’s arm.

Like she belonged there.

Like she had always belonged there.

I looked away before they noticed me watching.

I hated that my heart still reacted.

I hated that seeing them together still felt like someone had reopened an old wound.

Because I had moved on.

At least, I told myself I had.

I had built a life.

I had raised my daughter.

I had learned how to survive without him.

But some scars did not disappear.

They just became easier to hide.

"Emma?"

I looked up.

Sophia’s best friend, Rachel, stood beside my table.

She gave me a worried smile.

"You disappeared for a minute."

I forced a laugh.

"I’m right here."

Rachel studied my face.

"You don't have to pretend with me."

I looked down.

"I promised Sophia tonight would be about her."

Rachel sat beside me.

"And it is. But that doesn't mean you have to pretend Daniel doesn't exist."

I swallowed.

"I don't care about Daniel."

The lie came out too quickly.

Rachel noticed.

She always noticed.

Before she could answer, the music changed.

The first notes of a slow song filled the ballroom.

The newly married couple walked onto the dance floor.

Everyone turned toward them.

Everyone except Daniel.

I saw him looking directly at me.

For a second, neither of us moved.

Then Victoria leaned toward him and whispered something.

Daniel looked away.

That hurt more than I expected.

Not because I wanted him back.

I didn’t.

But because some part of me still wanted him to feel guilty.

I wanted him to look at me and remember what he had done.

I wanted him to understand that I was not the broken woman he left behind.

I was stronger now.

I looked away.

That was when someone stopped beside my chair.

I assumed it was another guest.

I assumed someone wanted to say hello.

I was wrong.

"Stand up."

The voice was calm.

Confident.

I looked up.

A man I had never seen before stood beside me.

He was tall.

Dark hair.

Black tuxedo.

A serious expression that made everyone around him seem to disappear.

I frowned.

"I'm sorry?"

He extended his hand.

"Stand up. Dance with me."

I stared at him.

"Do I know you?"

"No."

His answer surprised me.

Then he leaned closer.

"That's the point."

I looked around.

People nearby had started noticing.

Rachel looked confused.

A few guests whispered.

I lowered my voice.

"I think you have the wrong person."

The stranger didn't move.

Then he said the sentence that changed everything.

"Pretend you're my wife."

My entire body froze.

"What?"

He glanced toward Daniel.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

He knew him.

The stranger looked back at me.

"Please."

There was something different in his eyes now.

Not arrogance.

Not flirting.

Desperation.

I followed his gaze.

Daniel was watching.

His face had changed.

The confident smile was gone.

For the first time that night, he looked afraid.

And that was when I realized something.

This stranger was not here by accident.

I slowly stood.

The ballroom became quieter.

The stranger placed one hand gently around mine.

Then he guided me toward the dance floor.

Everyone watched.

Including Daniel.

"Who are you?" I whispered.

The stranger looked straight ahead.

"My name is Ethan."

"How do you know Daniel?"

He didn't answer.

That bothered me more.

"Ethan."

Finally, he looked at me.

"Because I know what he did to you."

My breath stopped.

The music continued around us.

People danced.

People laughed.

But suddenly, it felt like we were standing in a completely different room.

"What are you talking about?"

Ethan’s expression hardened.

"Your husband didn't leave you because he wanted a new life."

I stared at him.

"Then why did he leave?"

Before Ethan could answer, Daniel stepped toward us.

"Emma."

His voice cut through the music.

Everyone turned.

Victoria followed behind him.

"What is this?" Daniel asked.

Ethan looked at him.

"You know exactly what this is."

Daniel’s face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Enough for me to notice.

Enough for me to understand.

There was something between them.

Something I didn't know.

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Stay out of this."

Ethan smiled coldly.

"That was your mistake."

The room became silent.

Sophia walked toward us, confused.

"Emma, what is happening?"

I looked at my sister.

Then at Daniel.

Then at Ethan.

For years, I had believed Daniel abandoned me because he stopped loving me.

But standing there in that ballroom, watching the fear in his eyes, I realized something much worse.

Maybe I had never known the real reason he left.

Ethan reached into his jacket pocket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

My name was written across the front.

My hands started shaking.

"Where did you get that?" I whispered.

Ethan looked at Daniel.

"Ask your ex-husband."

Daniel took one step forward.

"Don't open it."

That was the first time all night he sounded afraid.

I held the envelope tighter.

Because whatever was inside...

May you like

Daniel had spent years trying to hide it.

And before I could tear it open, the ballroom lights suddenly flickered, and every phone in the room received the same unknown message.
