Chapter 4 - The Man Behind the Lie

The video started with silence.

Not the peaceful kind.

The kind that made everyone in the ballroom stop breathing.

The large screen behind the wedding stage flickered.

Then an image appeared.

A hospital hallway.

Six years earlier.

I recognized it immediately.

The white walls.

The old chairs.

The vending machine near the elevator.

I had spent three days sitting in that hallway waiting for my daughter to arrive.

Waiting for Daniel to come back.

My hands covered my mouth.

"No..."

The word escaped before I realized I had spoken.

Beside me, Ethan watched my face carefully.

He already knew what I was seeing.

The video showed Daniel walking through the hospital entrance.

Alone.

Looking nervous.

Looking around like he was afraid someone was following him.

Then another person appeared.

A man stepped into the frame.

I couldn't see his face.

Not yet.

But I knew the way he stood.

The confidence.

The control.

The feeling that everyone around him had to listen.

My heart started racing.

Because there was only one person in my life who made people feel that way.

My father.

The man everyone thought was gone.

The man who had died before my daughter turned four.

The man whose funeral I attended while still carrying unanswered questions.

The video continued.

Daniel and the man stood in the hallway.

The audio was unclear at first.

Then the speakers became louder.

Daniel's voice filled the ballroom.

"I can't do this."

A second voice answered.

"You already agreed."

I felt my stomach tighten.

That voice.

I knew that voice.

Even after years.

Even after death.

My father's voice.

The entire ballroom became silent.

Daniel looked at the screen.

His face had lost all color.

"Turn it off."

Nobody moved.

"Turn it off!"

His voice cracked.

That was when everyone realized.

Daniel wasn't confused.

He wasn't surprised.

He was afraid.

The video continued.

My father stepped closer to Daniel.

"You need to disappear."

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

A pause.

Then my father's voice became colder.

"If you stay, Emma dies."

The room exploded with whispers.

I stopped hearing them.

Everything around me disappeared.

I only heard those words.

Emma dies.

I looked at Daniel.

My eyes filled with anger.

"You knew."

He didn't answer.

"You knew."

This time my voice was louder.

Daniel looked at me.

"I was trying to protect you."

I laughed.

A painful laugh.

"Protect me?"

I pointed at the screen.

"You left me."

His eyes filled with guilt.

"I had no choice."

"No choice?"

I stepped closer.

"You let me believe you didn't love me anymore."

Daniel looked down.

"Because that was safer."

"For who?"

He didn't answer.

And that silence hurt more than anything.

Because it meant there was truth in the lie.

Ethan moved closer to me.

"Emma, you need to understand something."

I looked at him.

"What?"

"Your father wasn't trying to destroy your marriage."

My anger turned toward him.

"Then what was he doing?"

Ethan looked at the screen.

"He was hiding something much bigger."

The video suddenly changed.

The hospital hallway disappeared.

A new image appeared.

A document.

A signature.

My father's name.

And beneath it...

Daniel's.

My breathing stopped.

The document was dated two days before Daniel left.

The same day I thought everything was normal.

The same day he kissed my forehead before going to work.

The same day he promised he would be home for dinner.

I remembered that moment.

I remembered smiling.

I remembered thinking I was the luckiest woman alive.

I remembered believing my family was safe.

I was wrong.

The video showed my father placing the document on a table.

"This is the only way."

Daniel's voice answered.

"What if she finds out?"

My father replied:

"She can't."

The screen went black.

The ballroom lights came back on.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody knew what to say.

Then Sophia walked toward me.

Tears filled her eyes.

"Emma..."

I looked at her.

"Did you know?"

Her face changed.

And that was when my heart broke again.

Because she hesitated.

Only for a second.

But she hesitated.

"You knew?"

Sophia started crying.

"I didn't know everything."

I stepped back.

My own sister.

The person who stood beside me when Daniel left.

The person who held my daughter when I couldn't stop crying.

She knew something.

"What did you know?"

Sophia looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

"He made me promise."

"Promise what?"

"Not to tell you."

I stared at her.

"Tell me what?"

Sophia wiped her tears.

"That Daniel didn't leave because he wanted Victoria."

The room went quiet again.

Victoria looked away.

I turned toward her.

"Did you know too?"

She didn't answer.

That was enough.

The woman who married my husband knew.

The man who abandoned me had never actually abandoned me.

And everyone had decided I was better off living a lie.

I felt something inside me break.

Not sadness.

Not pain.

Something colder.

I looked at Daniel.

"Why?"

His eyes met mine.

"I thought keeping you alive mattered more than making you hate me."

I shook my head.

"You don't get to decide that."

"I know."

"No, you don't."

My voice trembled.

"You don't get to destroy my life and call it protection."

Daniel closed his eyes.

Because he knew I was right.

For years, I wondered why he didn't fight for me.

Why he didn't explain.

Why he didn't come back.

Now I knew.

But somehow...

Knowing the reason didn't make it hurt less.

Michael stepped forward.

"There is still something you don't know."

I looked at him.

"What now?"

He reached into the folder again.

This time he pulled out a small envelope.

Different from the first.

Older.

Worn.

My name was written across it.

But this handwriting wasn't Daniel's.

It wasn't my father's.

I recognized it immediately.

My own handwriting.

My heart stopped.

"Where did you get that?"

Michael looked at me.

"You wrote this six years ago."

I stared at him.

"I don't remember."

"I know."

He handed it to me.

"Because someone made sure you forgot."

My fingers touched the envelope.

A terrible feeling moved through me.

A memory.

Something hidden.

Something missing.

I opened it slowly.

Inside was a single page.

The first line made my entire body freeze.

Because it was written by me.

And it began with:

"If anything happens to me, don't trust Daniel..."

I looked up.

Daniel was staring at the letter.

Not at me.

At the words.

And that was when I realized...

May you like

He wasn't afraid of what I would discover.

He was afraid of what I had already discovered before.
