Chapter 4 - The Commander Who Hid The Truth

A voice came from the darkness and whispered:

"Maya... put the weapon down."

When I turned toward the hidden hallway, I found an old military jacket hanging beside a broken radio.

But carved into the metal receiver were four words:

"Trust no one here."

I suddenly realized Ravenwood had never been protecting us.

It had been watching us.

The person standing outside the hidden room stepped into the light.

My weapon remained raised.

My finger stayed near the trigger.

But my mind was already fighting against itself.

Because the person standing in front of me was someone I never expected to see again.

Lieutenant Sarah Whitmore.

My closest friend.

My teammate.

The person who dragged me out of the fire during Black Horizon.

The person who held my hand when I woke up in the hospital and told me everyone else was gone.

For four years, I believed she was the only person who understood what I lost.

Now she was standing inside Ravenwood's most secret room.

Alive.

Uninjured.

And carrying a weapon.

"Maya," Sarah said softly.

"I know how this looks."

I didn't lower my gun.

"Then explain."

Her eyes moved around the room.

They stopped on Jonah.

Then Commander Vance.

Then finally me.

"I wasn't supposed to find this place."

Jonah laughed quietly.

A bitter laugh.

"That's what everyone says when they get caught."

Sarah looked at him.

"You disappeared."

"So did you."

The tension between them filled the room.

I looked at both of them.

"What is happening?"

Nobody answered.

That was the part I hated most.

Not the danger.

Not the weapons.

The silence.

Everyone knew something except me.

I had spent years believing I understood my own story.

I was wrong.

Commander Vance slowly lowered his weapon.

"Maya, you need to listen carefully."

I looked at him.

"Four years ago, Black Horizon was not a rescue mission."

My chest tightened.

"Then what was it?"

He hesitated.

"A test."

The word felt heavier than any explosion.

"A test for what?"

Vance looked at Adrian's video screen.

"For people."

Nobody spoke.

He continued.

"There was a program inside military intelligence. A program designed to identify soldiers who could survive impossible situations."

I stared at him.

"You mean us."

"Yes."

Jonah stepped forward.

"They created situations where soldiers had to choose between orders and survival."

Sarah's expression changed.

"And when people failed, they erased the evidence."

My eyes moved between them.

"You all knew?"

Sarah looked down.

"I found out later."

"How much later?"

She didn't answer.

I already knew.

"How much later, Sarah?"

Her voice became quiet.

"Two years ago."

The room went silent.

I felt something inside me break.

Not because she knew.

Because she hid it.

"You let me believe I was alone."

"Maya..."

"No."

My voice shook.

"You watched me wake up every night remembering that mission."

Sarah stepped closer.

"I was trying to protect you."

"Everyone says that."

I looked at Vance.

I looked at Jonah.

"And somehow every person protecting me ends up lying to me."

Atlas moved beside me.

His body stayed tense.

His eyes never left Sarah.

Sarah noticed.

"He still remembers."

I looked at her.

"What?"

She stared at the dog.

"Atlas was there."

I froze.

"During Black Horizon."

Jonah nodded.

"He wasn't assigned to you by accident."

My eyes moved to Atlas.

The dog looked back at me.

Four years of memories suddenly felt different.

The missions.

The training.

The moments when Atlas reacted before I saw danger.

The moments I thought were instinct.

Maybe they weren't.

"What are you saying?"

Jonah opened another file.

Inside was a document with my name.

MAYA CARTER.

PROJECT SENTINEL.

My hands went cold.

I read the first page.

My entire military career.

My injuries.

My combat performance.

My psychological evaluations.

Everything.

But there was one line that made my breathing stop.

"Subject demonstrates strongest response when partnered with K9 unit A-17."

A-17.

Atlas.

I looked at him.

"You were watching us."

Vance shook his head.

"No."

"Then what?"

He looked away.

"We were studying what made you different."

Anger replaced confusion.

"I am not an experiment."

"No," Vance said.

"You're the reason the experiment ended."

The room became silent.

I looked at him.

"What does that mean?"

Before he could answer, the entire facility shook.

The lights flashed.

An explosion echoed somewhere above us.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Ramirez looked toward the hallway.

"They're inside."

Jonah grabbed the files.

"We have to move."

Sarah checked her weapon.

"They came for the evidence."

I looked at her.

"No."

Everyone stopped.

"They came for me."

Nobody denied it.

Because everyone knew.

The attack wasn't random.

The fake alarm.

The dead security officer.

The hidden room.

Adrian's message.

Everything led back to me.

A second explosion shook the building.

This time closer.

The soldiers outside began shouting.

Gunfire erupted.

Ravenwood was under attack.

Commander Vance looked at me.

"There is one thing Adrian wanted you to know."

I stared at him.

"What?"

He reached into his jacket.

And pulled out a small black device.

A recording chip.

My heart stopped.

Because I recognized it.

It was the same type of device used by Adrian during classified missions.

Vance handed it to me.

"He left this for you."

I held it.

"Why didn't you give it to me before?"

His face changed.

"Because I was afraid of what you would hear."

The room went quiet.

I inserted the chip into the old computer.

The screen flickered.

Then Adrian appeared again.

But this time...

He wasn't alone.

Someone stood behind him.

Someone whose face was hidden.

Adrian looked directly into the camera.

"Maya, if you are watching this, they already know the truth is coming out."

He paused.

"You need to understand something."

The person behind him stepped closer.

Adrian looked afraid.

Not worried.

Afraid.

"The person who destroyed Black Horizon..."

The video glitched.

The hidden figure moved into view.

I leaned closer.

May you like

The image cleared.

And I saw the face of the person standing behind Adrian.
