Chapter 2 - The Enemy Inside Ravenwood

The emergency lights turned on as the soldiers raised their weapons and shouted:
"Nobody move!"
When Commander Elias Vance reached the control room, he discovered a dead security officer holding a damaged access card.
But six numbers were carved into the metal surface:
"07-1429."
Elias suddenly realized the attack had started long before the alarms went off.
I had heard that voice before.
Not in person.
Not face to face.
But in the recordings.
The voice that came through the speakers belonged to Colonel Adrian Cross.
A man who had been declared dead four years earlier.
A man whose final mission report had been sealed by military command.
A man whose name was never supposed to be spoken inside Ravenwood again.
The soldiers around me looked confused.
Ramirez lowered his weapon slightly.
"Captain Carter... who was that?"
I didn't answer.
Because I was asking myself the same question.
How could a dead man contact us?
The speakers crackled again.
Static filled the room.
Then the voice returned.
"Maya."
My entire body went still.
Nobody called me that.
Not in the military.
Not after I became Captain Carter.
Only one person had ever used my first name with that tone.
Someone who knew the person underneath the uniform.
Someone who knew what I had survived.
Atlas immediately reacted.
The Belgian Malinois lowered his body.
His ears moved forward.
A deep growl came from his throat.
The soldiers noticed.
Ramirez looked at the dog.
"He's scared."
I shook my head.
"No."
I stared at the dark security cameras above us.
"He's warning us."
The lights flickered.
Then every screen inside the facility turned on at once.
The image showed a hallway.
Empty.
Silent.
A few seconds later, a figure appeared.
A man wearing a black tactical uniform.
His face was hidden in shadow.
But I knew the way he walked.
I knew the way he carried himself.
I knew the scar across his left hand.
My breathing stopped.
"Impossible," I whispered.
Commander Vance looked at me.
"You know him."
I didn't respond.
Because I did.
That was Adrian Cross.
My former commander.
My mentor.
The man who trained me when I was nothing.
The man who pulled me out of a burning vehicle during my first overseas operation.
The man who taught me that survival wasn't about being stronger than your enemy.
It was about understanding them before they understood you.
But four years ago, Adrian Cross died during Operation Black Horizon.
At least...
That was what everyone told me.
The screen suddenly zoomed closer.
Adrian looked directly into the camera.
Like he knew I was watching.
"Maya," he said.
"You always were the one who noticed the things nobody else saw."
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The entire facility listened.
"I know you have questions."
My fists tightened.
"You're supposed to be dead."
The soldiers looked at me.
Because they heard it.
They heard me talking to a screen.
They heard fear in my voice.
Something they had never seen before.
The screen went black.
Then a message appeared.
ACCESS GRANTED.
LEVEL SEVEN.
Everyone turned toward the main entrance.
A mechanical sound echoed through the facility.
The security locks were opening.
Commander Vance immediately raised his weapon.
"Everyone behind cover."
The soldiers moved.
For the first time since I arrived at Ravenwood, nobody questioned my orders.
They trusted me.
But trust wasn't enough.
Not against someone who knew every weakness inside this building.
The main doors opened slowly.
No one entered.
The hallway beyond was empty.
Ramirez looked confused.
"Maybe it's a trick."
I stepped forward.
"Yes."
"Then why open the door?"
I looked at him.
"Because whoever did this wants us to walk through it."
Atlas moved beside me.
His eyes stayed fixed on the darkness.
I remembered something Adrian told me years ago.
Never fear the trap you can see.
Fear the one designed to make you believe there isn't one.
I entered the hallway.
The others followed.
The facility felt different now.
The place that had always been controlled and protected suddenly felt like enemy territory.
Every camera watched us.
Every shadow looked alive.
We reached the security office.
The door was already damaged.
Inside, the dead officer lay on the floor.
Commander Vance checked the body.
"No visible wounds."
I looked closer.
There was a small mark on his neck.
A tiny injection point.
"Poison."
Vance looked at me.
"How do you know?"
"Because I saw it before."
The room became silent.
The soldiers looked at each other.
They were starting to understand.
This wasn't a random attack.
Someone had planned this.
Someone who knew military procedures.
Someone who knew Ravenwood.
Someone who knew me.
I searched the officer's desk.
Most files were destroyed.
Computers wiped.
Security footage erased.
Almost everything was gone.
Almost.
Inside the bottom drawer, I found a small metal box.
No label.
No identification.
Just a symbol carved into the surface.
A black wolf.
My hand stopped.
Because I knew that symbol.
Adrian Cross used it during classified operations.
It was never an official military symbol.
It was something only a handful of soldiers knew about.
A private mark.
A warning.
I opened the box.
Inside was a photograph.
My heart dropped.
It was a picture of me.
Not from today.
Not from my military service.
From years ago.
Before Ravenwood.
Before I became Captain Carter.
Before anyone knew my name.
I was standing beside Adrian.
And beside us was another person.
Someone I never expected to see again.
Commander Vance noticed my expression.
"Who is that?"
I didn't answer.
Because the person in the photograph was the reason I joined the military.
The reason Adrian trained me.
The reason I stopped trusting anyone.
My eyes moved to the back of the photograph.
There was writing.
A message.
Six words.
My hands started shaking.
Ramirez stepped closer.
"What does it say?"
I turned the photograph over.
And read the handwriting.
"She was never your enemy."
The room went silent.
Then Atlas suddenly barked.
Not at the hallway.
Not at the door.
At the wall behind me.
Everyone turned.
Commander Vance slowly walked toward it.
"There shouldn't be anything there."
He touched the panel.
A hidden mechanism clicked.
The wall began opening.
And behind it was a small room that had been sealed for years.
May you like
Inside stood a person holding a weapon.
And they whispered my name.
