Chapter 3 - The Soldier Hidden Behind the Shadow

A wounded man stepped out from the hidden room and whispered:
"Maya... you were never supposed to find this."
When Commander Elias Vance entered the sealed chamber, he discovered an old military identification badge covered in dust.
But one name was still visible beneath the scratches:
"Adrian Cross."
Elias suddenly realized the dead commander had left something behind.
The person standing inside the hidden room didn't raise his weapon.
He didn't move.
He just stared at me.
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
Because I knew that face.
Not from a photograph.
Not from a file.
From years ago.
"Jonah?"
The man's eyes changed.
A mixture of relief and fear crossed his face.
"You still remember."
The soldiers behind me tightened their grips on their weapons.
Ramirez looked between us.
"Captain... who is he?"
I couldn't answer immediately.
Because Jonah Hale was supposed to be dead too.
Not officially.
Not like Adrian Cross.
But everyone who knew him believed he disappeared during the same operation.
Operation Black Horizon.
The mission that destroyed my unit.
The mission that took everything from me.
Commander Vance stepped forward.
"Identify yourself."
The man slowly raised his hands.
"Jonah Hale. Former intelligence specialist. Ravenwood classified division."
Vance's expression changed.
He knew the name.
Everyone in the military knew it.
Jonah wasn't a soldier who fought on the front lines.
He was the person who found the truth before anyone else knew there was a lie.
He uncovered hidden operations.
Corrupt commanders.
False reports.
Secret missions buried beneath official records.
And then, four years ago, he vanished.
I looked at him.
"You were there."
His face hardened.
"Yes."
"You saw what happened."
"Yes."
"Then why did everyone say nobody survived?"
Jonah looked away.
"Because that's what they needed everyone to believe."
The room became silent.
I felt anger rising inside me.
Not confusion.
Not fear.
Anger.
Because for four years, I carried the memory of that night.
The explosion.
The fire.
The screams.
The moment Adrian pushed me away from the collapsing structure.
The moment I watched him disappear.
I spent years believing I was the only survivor.
But now I was standing in front of someone who knew the truth.
"You knew Adrian was alive."
Jonah didn't respond.
That was enough.
I stepped closer.
"You knew."
"Maya..."
"Answer me."
His silence confirmed everything.
Ramirez looked uncomfortable.
He had never seen me lose control before.
Neither had the others.
I was always the calm one.
The soldier who calculated every move.
The soldier who never showed emotion.
But Adrian Cross was different.
He wasn't just my commander.
He was the person who gave me a second chance.
Before the military, I was just another recruit.
Talented.
But reckless.
I thought surviving meant being stronger.
Adrian taught me something else.
Survival meant knowing when to trust.
And now I didn't know who I could trust anymore.
Jonah walked toward the metal table inside the hidden room.
He opened a second compartment.
Inside were dozens of files.
Physical files.
Not digital.
Old paper.
The kind that couldn't be erased with a keyboard.
"This is why Ravenwood was attacked tonight."
Commander Vance looked at the files.
"What are they?"
Jonah looked at me.
"The truth about Black Horizon."
Nobody spoke.
The name alone changed the atmosphere.
The operation was supposed to be a rescue mission.
A mission to extract captured soldiers from enemy territory.
But something went wrong.
The coordinates were leaked.
The enemy was waiting.
Our team walked into a trap.
Officially, the failure was blamed on intelligence mistakes.
Unofficially...
I always believed someone inside betrayed us.
Jonah placed a file on the table.
"This contains everything."
I opened it.
The first page showed mission details.
The second showed communication records.
The third showed something that made my stomach tighten.
A list of names.
Soldiers.
Officers.
Commanders.
People involved with the operation.
My eyes moved down the page.
Then stopped.
Because one name was highlighted.
Commander Elias Vance.
I slowly looked up.
The room changed instantly.
Every soldier noticed.
Ramirez looked at his commander.
Vance stared at the file.
"I can explain."
Nobody moved.
Nobody lowered their weapon.
I looked at Jonah.
"Why is his name here?"
Jonah took a breath.
"Because someone authorized the mission knowing it was a trap."
My hand tightened around the paper.
"And you're saying that person was him?"
Jonah didn't answer.
That was worse.
Commander Vance stepped forward.
"Listen to me. You don't know what you're looking at."
"Then explain."
"I can't."
The words shocked everyone.
He couldn't explain.
Not wouldn't.
Couldn't.
That meant there was something bigger.
Something above him.
Something that even a commander feared.
Suddenly, the lights flickered again.
Jonah looked toward the ceiling.
His expression changed.
"We have to leave."
I turned.
"Why?"
"Because they know we're here."
A sound echoed through the hallway.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Controlled.
Someone was walking toward us.
The soldiers moved into defensive positions.
Atlas stood beside me.
Growling.
But this time...
He wasn't facing the hallway.
He was facing Commander Vance.
Everyone noticed.
My heart sank.
Because Atlas only reacted that way when he sensed danger.
And he had never been wrong.
Vance looked at the dog.
"Maya..."
I raised my weapon slightly.
"Don't move."
His face showed something I had never seen before.
Not anger.
Not fear.
Regret.
"I was trying to protect you."
I stared at him.
"From what?"
Before he could answer, every screen in the hidden room turned on.
A video began playing.
Adrian Cross appeared.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
The entire room froze.
He looked directly into the camera.
"If Maya is watching this..."
He paused.
Then his expression changed.
"That means Elias failed to stop them."
Commander Vance closed his eyes.
The video continued.
"The person who betrayed Black Horizon was never outside the team."
My breathing stopped.
Adrian looked down for a moment.
Then said the words that changed everything.
"The traitor was someone Maya trusted more than anyone."
The screen went black.
May you like
At that exact moment, the hidden room door slowly opened from the outside.
And a familiar voice called my name.
