Chapter 6 - The Person Behind The Recording

The hallway became silent.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because the person standing outside the door was the same person who had been standing beside my hospital bed in the recording.

The officer raised his hand.

"Stay where you are."

The figure didn't answer.

The security guard stepped back.

Rachel covered her mouth.

Daniel looked like he had seen a ghost.

That was the moment I noticed something.

Daniel wasn't afraid of the person.

He was afraid of what the person could reveal.

"Who is that?" I whispered.

Nobody answered.

The officer moved toward the door slowly.

"Identify yourself."

The person outside remained still.

Then a voice came through.

A woman's voice.

"I'm here because Emily deserves the truth."

My heart stopped.

I knew that voice.

But I couldn't place it.

The officer looked at Daniel.

"You know her?"

Daniel didn't respond.

The officer turned.

"Answer me."

Daniel swallowed.

"Yes."

The room changed.

Because everyone realized the same thing.

This wasn't a random person.

This was someone connected to everything.

The officer opened the door slightly.

A woman stepped inside.

She was in her late fifties.

Short gray hair.

Tired eyes.

She carried a small brown bag in her hands.

My body went cold.

Because I recognized her.

Not from meeting her.

From photographs.

"Linda..."

The name left my mouth.

Daniel's mother.

My mother-in-law.

The woman who had stood beside the plastic container.

The woman who had hit the side while I begged for help.

The officer immediately moved between us.

"Ma'am, step away."

Linda looked at me.

There was no anger on her face.

No confidence.

Only exhaustion.

"Emily..."

I looked away.

I couldn't hear that name from her.

Not from her.

"You don't get to say my name like you care."

Linda lowered her eyes.

For the first time, she looked small.

"I know."

Daniel suddenly spoke.

"Mom, leave."

Everyone looked at him.

Linda turned.

"No."

The word was quiet.

But firm.

"You lied long enough."

Daniel's face changed.

"Don't do this."

The officer noticed.

"Do what?"

Linda looked at him.

"Tell the truth."

The room froze.

I stared at her.

"You knew."

She didn't deny it.

That hurt more.

"You knew what he was doing."

Linda closed her eyes.

"Yes."

My chest tightened.

"How long?"

She looked at the floor.

"Years."

The answer felt impossible.

Years.

Not one mistake.

Not one bad day.

Years.

The officer pulled out his notebook.

"Start talking."

Linda sat down.

Her hands were shaking.

"Daniel always needed control."

She looked at her son.

"When he was young, he hated feeling powerless."

Daniel looked away.

"Mom."

She continued.

"No."

Her voice broke.

"Not anymore."

She looked at me.

"When Emily lost the first baby, Daniel changed."

My fingers tightened around the blanket.

"What did he do?"

Linda hesitated.

"He started recording everything."

Rachel whispered:

"Just like I said."

Linda nodded.

"He thought if he collected enough proof, nobody would question him."

The officer frowned.

"Proof of what?"

Linda looked at me.

"That you were unstable."

I closed my eyes.

Even hearing it again hurt.

Because it meant every cruel sentence had a purpose.

Every argument.

Every accusation.

Every moment I questioned myself.

It was planned.

The officer looked at Daniel.

"Did you install cameras in your own home?"

Daniel stayed silent.

Linda answered for him.

"Yes."

The officer turned.

"Did you know about the hidden room?"

Linda nodded.

"Yes."

My heart sank.

The hidden room.

The room where my life had been stored like evidence.

"What was inside?"

Linda looked at the brown bag in her hands.

"I brought something."

She opened it.

Inside were dozens of photographs.

The officer took them.

I saw his expression change.

"What are these?"

Linda whispered:

"Everything Daniel collected."

The officer looked through them.

Photos of me.

At home.

Sleeping.

Crying.

Talking on the phone.

Moments I thought were private.

Moments I never knew anyone had seen.

I felt sick.

Rachel came closer.

"Emily..."

I pushed the photographs away.

"How long?"

Linda looked at me.

"Since before your first pregnancy."

I felt like I couldn't breathe.

The same time.

The same period when I thought I was building a family.

Daniel was building a case.

The officer looked at Linda.

"Why are you telling us now?"

Linda didn't answer immediately.

Then she looked at Daniel.

"Because he went too far."

Daniel laughed.

A cold, bitter sound.

"Too far?"

Everyone looked at him.

He stepped forward.

"You think you understand?"

The officer stopped him.

"Stay back."

Daniel looked at me.

"You have no idea what I was trying to prevent."

I stared at him.

"You almost killed me."

His face tightened.

"No."

The word came quickly.

"I was trying to make sure nobody could take you away from me."

The room went quiet.

Rachel looked disgusted.

"That's not love."

Daniel looked at her.

"You don't know anything."

Rachel shook her head.

"I know enough."

The officer moved toward Daniel.

"You are going to explain everything."

Daniel looked at the door.

Then at Linda.

Then at me.

And I realized something.

He wasn't looking for a way out.

He was waiting.

For something.

"Daniel."

I whispered.

"What else did you do?"

He didn't answer.

The officer's phone suddenly rang.

Everyone stopped.

He checked the screen.

His expression changed.

"What?"

He answered.

"Yes."

A pause.

Then:

"You're sure?"

He looked at me.

My heart started racing.

"What happened?"

The officer slowly lowered the phone.

"We searched your house."

I waited.

"What did you find?"

He looked at Linda.

Then Daniel.

Then me.

"We found another room."

I felt cold.

"You already found the hidden room."

The officer shook his head.

"No."

He looked serious.

"The first room was not hidden."

Nobody spoke.

"The second one was."

My breathing stopped.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Linda whispered:

"Oh God."

The officer continued.

"There was a locked door behind the wall."

Rachel stepped closer.

"What was inside?"

The officer didn't answer.

He looked at the photos on the table.

Then at me.

"Emily..."

His voice changed.

"We found your name written on the door."

I felt my stomach drop.

My name.

Written on a hidden door.

The officer continued.

"But that's not the worst part."

Nobody moved.

"What was inside?"

The officer looked down at his phone.

"We found a recording."

Daniel suddenly spoke.

"No."

Everyone turned.

He looked terrified.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Terrified.

The officer noticed.

"You know what recording I'm talking about?"

Daniel said nothing.

The officer pressed play.

A woman's voice came from the phone.

A voice I had never heard before.

But Daniel clearly recognized it.

The recording lasted only a few seconds.

Then the voice said:

"If Emily ever finds this room, it means Daniel failed."

My heart stopped.

The officer looked at Daniel.

"Who is this woman?"

Daniel didn't answer.

Then the recording continued.

And the next words made everyone in the room freeze.

"Because the truth about Emily's first baby was never what she was told."

The officer turned toward me.

May you like

The door behind us suddenly opened.

And a doctor I had never seen before walked in holding my old medical file.
