Chapter 2 - The Visitor Behind The Hospital Door

The nurse's voice stopped the entire room.

"Emily... someone is here to see you."

I stared at her.

For a second, I thought I had misunderstood.

Someone?

After everything that happened, I couldn't imagine anyone walking into that hospital room without fear.

My body still felt heavy.

Every breath reminded me of the plastic walls pressing against me.

Every movement reminded me that my baby and I had almost not made it out.

The doctor noticed the fear on my face.

"Who is it?" she asked the nurse.

The nurse looked down at the tablet in her hands.

"She says her name is Rachel Miller."

My heart stopped.

Rachel.

I knew that name.

Not because she was a friend.

Not because she was family.

Because she was the one person Daniel never wanted me to meet.

"Emily?"

The doctor touched my shoulder.

"Do you know her?"

I looked toward the door.

My mouth opened, but no words came out.

Because suddenly, I remembered every strange conversation.

Every time Daniel turned his phone away from me.

Every time he said he was working late.

Every time he told me I was imagining things.

"I don't know," I finally whispered.

But even as I said it, I knew that wasn't true.

I knew exactly who Rachel was.

And I knew Daniel was going to be terrified that she was here.

The door opened slowly.

A woman stepped inside.

She looked to be in her early thirties.

She had tired eyes, messy blonde hair, and a small scar near her eyebrow.

She wasn't angry.

She wasn't dramatic.

She looked scared.

Her eyes immediately went to me.

Then to my stomach.

Then to the hospital bracelet around my wrist.

"Oh my God..."

Her voice cracked.

"You're alive."

The room became silent.

I looked at her.

"What did you just say?"

Rachel froze.

The doctor looked between us.

"You were expecting her not to be alive?"

Rachel's face changed.

She realized she had said too much.

"No."

She shook her head quickly.

"No, that's not what I meant."

But the damage was already done.

I felt my heartbeat increase.

"Who are you?"

Rachel swallowed.

"My name is Rachel Miller."

She looked at the floor.

"I used to work with Daniel."

The words hit me harder than I expected.

Work with him.

That was the safe answer.

The careful answer.

But there was something in her expression that told me there was more.

"How do you know my name?" I asked.

She didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she looked toward the hallway.

Like she was afraid someone might hear.

"I came because I saw the news."

My eyebrows tightened.

"What news?"

Rachel looked at me.

"The neighbor called emergency services. The police report started spreading after the hospital contacted them."

She took a breath.

"And when I saw your husband's name..."

She stopped.

The doctor stepped closer.

"Rachel, if you know something relevant, now is the time to say it."

Rachel looked at me again.

"I'm sorry."

I hated those words.

Everyone kept saying sorry.

Daniel said sorry.

The nurse said sorry.

The doctors said sorry.

But none of those apologies changed what happened.

"Don't apologize," I said quietly.

"Tell me the truth."

Rachel sat down slowly.

"Daniel wasn't always like this."

I looked away.

I didn't want to hear another person defend him.

But Rachel continued.

"Three years ago, I worked at the same company as him. I noticed things about him."

"What things?"

She looked at her hands.

"How he talked about controlling situations. How he hated losing arguments. How he always needed people to believe his version of events."

My stomach tightened.

"Why are you telling me this?"

Rachel reached into her bag.

She pulled out her phone.

"I saved something."

The doctor watched carefully.

Rachel opened a folder.

There were several videos.

My breathing changed.

"What are those?"

Rachel looked at me.

"Messages from Daniel."

I stared at the screen.

"Why would you have his messages?"

She looked ashamed.

"Because he sent them to me."

The room went completely quiet.

I felt like the floor disappeared.

I knew Daniel had betrayed me before.

I knew he had lied.

But hearing it from someone else made it real in a different way.

"When?" I asked.

Rachel looked down.

"Before you got pregnant."

I closed my eyes.

A thousand memories rushed through my mind.

Daniel touching my stomach.

Daniel telling me he was excited to become a father.

Daniel saying I was his entire world.

Were any of those moments real?

Rachel continued.

"He stopped contacting me when he found out you were pregnant."

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because my brain couldn't process the cruelty of it.

"He replaced you with me?"

Rachel looked at me.

"No."

She hesitated.

"He replaced everyone with control."

The doctor took the phone.

She watched one of the videos.

Her expression became serious.

I couldn't hear the sound clearly from where I was.

But I saw Daniel's face on the screen.

Calm.

Confident.

Like he was talking about something normal.

Then the doctor paused the video.

"Emily."

I looked at her.

"You need to see this."

She turned the phone toward me.

My heart dropped.

Daniel was sitting at a table.

Talking.

And beside him was Linda.

My mother-in-law.

They were not arguing.

They were planning.

I couldn't hear everything.

But one sentence was clear.

Daniel looked directly at the camera and said:

"Once people believe she is unstable, nobody will question anything."

My hands started shaking.

The room became blurry.

Because suddenly, everything made sense.

The small comments.

The accusations.

The way Linda always said I was too sensitive.

The way Daniel made me apologize after every argument.

They weren't random.

They were preparing something.

The door suddenly opened.

A police officer entered.

"Emily Carter?"

Everyone turned.

The officer looked at the doctor.

"I need to speak with her."

The doctor stepped forward.

"Is this about the incident?"

The officer nodded.

"Yes."

He looked at me.

"We found something inside your house."

My heart raced.

"What?"

The officer reached into a folder.

Inside was a photograph.

He placed it on the table.

I picked it up slowly.

It was a picture of me.

Sleeping.

Pregnant.

Taken inside my bedroom.

I felt cold.

"Who took this?"

The officer looked uncomfortable.

"We don't know yet."

I stared at the image.

The angle was wrong.

The picture wasn't taken from the doorway.

It was taken from inside the room.

Like someone had been standing beside my bed.

Rachel suddenly stood up.

Her face turned pale.

"No..."

Everyone looked at her.

The officer noticed.

"You know something?"

Rachel stepped backward.

"I thought he destroyed those."

The room went silent.

"Destroyed what?" I asked.

Rachel looked at me.

Then at the officer.

Then toward the hospital hallway.

Her voice dropped.

"The recordings."

My hands tightened.

"What recordings?"

Rachel didn't answer.

She walked slowly toward the door.

"Emily, you need to leave this hospital."

The doctor frowned.

"She's injured. She can't just leave."

Rachel shook her head.

"No."

Her eyes filled with fear.

"She can't stay here."

The officer moved closer.

"Why?"

Rachel looked at the security camera above the door.

Then she whispered:

"Because if Daniel knows I came here..."

She stopped.

Her phone suddenly vibrated.

Everyone looked down.

A new message appeared on the screen.

From Daniel.

Rachel's face went completely white.

The message only contained five words.

"She knows too much. Find her."

The officer reached for the phone.

But before he touched it...

May you like

The hospital room lights went out.

And the locked door slowly began to open from the outside.
