Chapter 5 - The Child Nobody Knew About

The hospital room felt smaller after we heard the voice.

Not because the walls moved.

Because the truth did.

For years, I thought my biggest fear was losing my family.

I never imagined my biggest fear would be discovering that the family I was fighting to protect had been hiding from me.

The words from the intercom stayed in my mind.

"Ask Daniel about the night your first baby disappeared."

My first baby.

I looked at Daniel.

He didn't look surprised.

That was what broke me.

Not his silence.

Not his fear.

His eyes.

Because for one second, I saw recognition.

He knew exactly what the voice was talking about.

"Daniel."

My voice barely came out.

"What did she mean?"

He didn't answer.

The officer stepped closer.

"Answer her."

Daniel looked at the floor.

"Emily, this isn't the time."

I felt something inside me break.

"This isn't the time?"

I pushed myself up slightly.

"The person who trapped me almost killed me. Someone was watching me inside this hospital. And now I hear that I had another baby?"

My voice became louder.

"When were you planning to tell me?"

Daniel opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Rachel looked at him with disgust.

"You never told her."

Daniel looked at Rachel.

"Don't."

The officer immediately noticed.

"Don't what?"

Rachel took a deep breath.

"Don't let him control the conversation."

She looked at me.

"Emily, you need to know what happened four years ago."

I stared at her.

Four years.

That was when everything changed.

That was when Daniel and I had started trying to have a family.

That was when I thought we were happy.

Rachel continued.

"You were pregnant before."

My hands went cold.

"I know."

The words came out before I could stop them.

I remembered.

A positive test.

A tiny heartbeat on a screen.

Daniel holding my hand.

Then the hospital.

Then the empty room.

Then the doctor saying there was nothing they could do.

I remembered losing my baby.

But I never remembered what happened after.

Because everyone told me the same thing.

It was an accident.

A tragedy.

Something nobody could control.

Rachel looked at me.

"It wasn't."

The room went silent.

The doctor slowly stepped closer.

"Emily, are you saying you lost a pregnancy before this one?"

I nodded.

"Four years ago."

Rachel looked at Daniel.

"He knows."

I turned.

"What?"

Rachel's voice became softer.

"He knew the truth."

Daniel immediately shook his head.

"No."

The officer raised his hand.

"Nobody move."

Daniel stopped.

Rachel continued.

"After the miscarriage, Daniel told people you couldn't handle reality."

My heart sank.

"He said I was grieving."

Rachel nodded.

"At first, I believed him."

She looked ashamed.

"Everyone did."

The officer looked at Daniel.

"Where is this going?"

Rachel reached into her bag again.

This time, she pulled out a small envelope.

"I found this in his office."

Daniel's face changed.

"No."

Everyone noticed.

The officer took the envelope.

"What is this?"

Daniel stepped forward.

"I said no."

The officer opened it.

Inside was a hospital bracelet.

Old.

Faded.

Tiny.

My breathing stopped.

Because I recognized it.

Not because of the name.

Because of the date.

The same date my baby was born.

I reached out.

The officer hesitated.

Then handed it to me.

My fingers shook as I touched it.

The bracelet had my name.

Emily Carter.

And underneath it...

There was another name.

A name I had never seen.

A baby's name.

My baby.

I covered my mouth.

"No..."

Daniel looked away.

I looked at him.

"You had this?"

He didn't respond.

"You had my baby's bracelet?"

His silence answered.

The room became painfully quiet.

The doctor looked at Daniel.

"Why did you keep this?"

Daniel finally spoke.

"Because I was trying to protect her."

I almost couldn't believe what I heard.

"Protect me?"

He looked at me.

"You were not okay after that."

The officer stepped forward.

"Be careful."

But Daniel continued.

"You were breaking apart."

My eyes filled with tears.

"Because I lost my child."

Daniel looked away.

"And I couldn't watch you destroy yourself."

Rachel shook her head.

"That's not why."

Daniel looked at her.

"Shut up."

The officer immediately stepped between them.

"No more warnings."

Rachel looked at me.

"Emily, he wasn't protecting you."

She pointed at the bracelet.

"He kept it because he needed proof."

"Proof of what?"

Rachel looked at Daniel.

"That you were weak."

My heart stopped.

The same word.

The same plan.

The same story he had been building.

The officer looked at the documents again.

"The timeline."

Rachel nodded.

"He planned to use the miscarriage as the beginning."

I stared at her.

"The beginning of what?"

Rachel took a breath.

"Making everyone believe you were mentally unstable."

I felt sick.

The arguments.

The isolation.

The accusations.

It wasn't happening randomly.

It was being built.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Daniel stepped toward me.

"Emily, listen to me."

I looked at him.

And for the first time in our marriage...

I didn't see my husband.

I saw someone I didn't know.

"You let me believe my baby was gone."

His eyes filled.

"I didn't want to hurt you."

"You let me grieve alone."

"I was trying to help."

"No."

My voice shook.

"You were controlling the story."

Daniel didn't answer.

The officer's radio suddenly made a sound.

A message came through.

"Officer Bennett, we found something in the patient's home."

Everyone turned.

"What did you find?"

A pause.

Then the voice answered.

"A hidden room."

My blood went cold.

The officer looked at me.

"Emily, did you know about any hidden room?"

I slowly shook my head.

"No."

Rachel looked terrified.

"That can't be."

The officer looked at her.

"What?"

Rachel stepped backward.

"Daniel didn't just collect videos."

The room became silent.

"What else did he do?"

Rachel whispered:

"He kept everything."

The officer frowned.

"Everything?"

Rachel looked at me.

"Every document. Every photo. Every recording."

My stomach tightened.

"Why?"

Rachel's eyes filled with fear.

"Because he wasn't planning to destroy your life."

She looked toward Daniel.

"He was planning to replace it."

Daniel suddenly moved toward the door.

The officer grabbed him.

"Where are you going?"

Daniel struggled.

"You don't understand."

"Then explain."

Daniel looked at me.

And I saw something I had never seen before.

Panic.

Real panic.

"Emily..."

He stopped.

The hallway lights flickered.

The nurse outside suddenly screamed.

Everyone turned.

A hospital security guard was running toward us.

"Officer!"

He held up a small device.

"We found this attached underneath her hospital bed."

The officer took it.

A tiny camera.

Hidden.

Recording.

My hands covered my mouth.

Someone had been watching me.

Even here.

The security guard looked at the screen.

Then his face changed.

"There's something else."

The officer looked at him.

"What?"

The guard turned the device around.

The last recorded video was only a few minutes old.

The screen showed my hospital room.

Everyone inside.

Including Daniel.

Including Rachel.

Including me.

But the final frame showed something impossible.

A person standing beside my bed while I was sleeping.

And the face was not Daniel's.

The officer zoomed in.

Then whispered:

"Emily..."

He looked at me.

"We know who installed the camera."

May you like

The door behind him slowly opened.

And the person in the recording was standing outside.
