Chapter 4 - The Camera Behind The Wall

The room went silent.
Nobody moved.
The door was open.
But nobody had entered.
That was the part that terrified me the most.
If someone had walked in, if someone had attacked us, if someone had shouted, at least we would have understood what was happening.
But the empty doorway felt worse.
It meant someone had been close enough to unlock it.
Close enough to take the picture.
Close enough to watch us.
The police officer slowly reached for his radio.
"Security team, I need assistance on the fourth floor. Possible unauthorized access."
Rachel stood beside my bed, staring at the hallway.
Her face had lost all color.
"Emily..."
I looked at her.
"What?"
She swallowed.
"The person who took that picture wanted us to know they were there."
A chill moved through me.
"What do you mean?"
She pointed at the image on her phone.
"Look."
I looked closer.
At first, I only saw myself lying in the hospital bed.
Then I noticed something.
A reflection.
In the dark window behind me.
A small shape.
Someone standing near the corner.
Watching.
My hands immediately went to my stomach.
The doctor noticed.
"Emily, don't move."
But I couldn't stop shaking.
The officer stepped toward the window.
He checked the reflection.
Then the corner.
Nothing.
Whoever had been there was gone.
But the fear remained.
Because now I knew something.
Daniel wasn't the only person who had been watching me.
The officer closed the door and locked it.
"Nobody leaves until we understand what happened."
Daniel laughed quietly.
Not because anything was funny.
Because he was frustrated.
"You think this is about me?"
The officer turned.
"You were found sitting on top of a container holding your pregnant wife."
Daniel looked away.
"I made mistakes."
I stared at him.
"Mistakes?"
His eyes met mine.
For a second, I saw anger.
Then it disappeared.
"I was trying to protect you."
The words almost made me forget how weak I felt.
Protect me.
That was what he always said.
Every time he controlled my choices.
Every time he checked my phone.
Every time he decided who I could talk to.
He called it protection.
But it had always felt like a cage.
Rachel stepped forward.
"You don't protect people by collecting videos of them."
Daniel looked at her.
"Stay out of this."
"No."
Rachel's voice trembled.
"But I stayed quiet for years."
She held up her phone.
"I watched you destroy people's lives because I was afraid you would do the same to me."
The officer looked between them.
"Start from the beginning."
Rachel took a deep breath.
"Daniel had a system."
"What kind of system?"
"He kept files on people."
The officer frowned.
"Personal information?"
"Everything."
Rachel looked at me.
"Conversations. Photos. Private moments."
My stomach turned.
"How long?"
Rachel hesitated.
"Since before you met him."
The room felt colder.
Daniel immediately spoke.
"She's lying."
Rachel looked at him.
"Then tell them why your hidden folder was called 'Proof.'"
Daniel froze.
The officer noticed.
"What proof?"
Daniel didn't answer.
That silence said more than words.
The officer looked at me.
"Emily, did your husband ever accuse you of things that you didn't do?"
I thought about it.
The arguments.
The accusations.
The moments when I questioned myself.
"Yes."
"What kind?"
I swallowed.
"He said I was unstable."
The officer wrote something down.
"He said I imagined things."
Another note.
"He said nobody would believe me."
The room became quiet.
Rachel closed her eyes.
"Exactly."
The officer looked at Daniel.
"You were building a story."
Daniel's expression changed.
"You don't know anything about my marriage."
The officer stepped closer.
"Maybe not."
He looked at the evidence bag.
"But I know about evidence."
The doctor checked my medical chart.
Then she looked at me.
"Emily, we need to monitor the baby for another few hours."
I nodded.
But my attention stayed on Rachel.
Because there was one question I couldn't stop thinking about.
"Why did you come here?"
Rachel looked at me.
"I already told you."
"No."
I shook my head.
"You came because you saw my name."
She stayed quiet.
"You came because you knew something would happen."
Rachel looked down.
Finally, she whispered:
"I knew Daniel was planning something."
The room froze.
"What?"
Rachel sat down slowly.
"Two weeks ago, I found a document."
The officer immediately turned.
"What document?"
Rachel opened her bag.
She pulled out a folded piece of paper.
"I didn't know what it meant at first."
The officer took it carefully.
I watched his expression change as he read.
"What is it?"
He didn't answer.
That scared me.
"Officer?"
He looked at me.
"It is a timeline."
My heart started beating faster.
"A timeline for what?"
Rachel looked at Daniel.
"For your collapse."
Nobody spoke.
I stared at her.
"What does that mean?"
She looked away.
"Daniel had planned moments where people would think you were losing control."
My eyes filled with tears.
"He planned this?"
Rachel nodded.
"The arguments. The accusations. The isolation."
Daniel stepped forward.
"Stop."
The officer blocked him.
Rachel continued.
"He wanted everyone around you to believe you were dangerous."
I looked at Daniel.
"Why?"
He didn't answer.
That was the first time I realized something.
Maybe Daniel didn't want me gone.
Maybe he wanted something else.
Something worse.
The officer unfolded the paper completely.
"There are dates here."
He looked up.
"One of them is today."
My blood turned cold.
"What?"
The officer pointed at the page.
"The date of the incident."
Nobody moved.
Daniel looked nervous for the first time.
The officer continued reading.
"There is another note."
"What note?"
He looked at me.
"It says..."
He stopped.
Then he read:
"After the final event, Emily will have no credibility left."
My breathing became shallow.
Final event.
Those words stayed in my head.
Because the attack wasn't the end.
It was supposed to be part of something bigger.
The officer looked at Daniel.
"What was the final event?"
Daniel stayed silent.
"Answer me."
Still nothing.
Then Daniel slowly looked toward the hallway.
Not at me.
Not at Rachel.
At someone outside.
The officer noticed.
"Who are you looking at?"
Daniel didn't respond.
The lights flickered again.
Once.
Twice.
Then the hospital intercom turned on.
A woman's voice echoed through the room.
"Emily Carter."
Everyone froze.
The voice continued.
"You need to know what your husband did before you wake up tomorrow."
Daniel's face changed completely.
He recognized the voice.
Rachel whispered:
"No..."
The officer grabbed his radio.
"Identify yourself."
No answer.
Only static.
Then the voice returned.
"Ask Daniel about the night your first baby disappeared."
My entire body went cold.
I looked at Daniel.
"My first baby?"
Daniel stepped backward.
For the first time, he looked truly afraid.
Because I had never told anyone about that.
Nobody knew.
Nobody except...
The intercom crackled again.
May you like
And the voice said one final sentence.
"Emily, the person who told me everything was standing beside you five minutes ago."
