Chapter 7 - The Woman My Father Trusted

The hospital door opened slowly.

Everyone turned.

Nobody spoke.

A woman stood there holding a small leather bag.

She looked older than the woman in the photograph.

But I recognized her immediately.

My hands started shaking.

Because I had seen that face before.

Not in a photograph.

Not in a memory.

In my childhood.

"Mom?"

The word escaped my mouth before I could stop it.

The woman froze.

Tears filled her eyes.

And for a moment, nobody in the room moved.

My mother.

The woman I was told had left when I was young.

The woman everyone said disappeared.

The woman my father never spoke about after his death.

She took one step forward.

"Emily..."

Her voice broke.

I stared at her.

I couldn't breathe.

All the emotions I had buried for years came rushing back.

Anger.

Confusion.

Pain.

"You were alive."

It wasn't a question.

It was a realization.

My mother looked down.

"Yes."

Daniel immediately stepped backward.

Margaret's expression changed completely.

For the first time that night...

She looked afraid.

Nathan noticed.

"You knew she was alive."

Margaret didn't answer.

My mother looked at Nathan.

"You found her."

Nathan nodded.

"After all these years."

I looked between them.

"Someone please explain what is happening."

My voice shook.

"I spent my entire life believing my mother abandoned me."

My mother covered her mouth.

"I never abandoned you."

Those words hurt.

Because they were the words I had wanted to hear for years.

But they came too late.

"Then where were you?"

Silence.

My mother looked at the floor.

"Hidden."

I stared at her.

"Hidden by who?"

Nobody answered.

Then my mother looked at Margaret.

And everything became clear.

Margaret looked away.

My chest tightened.

"You knew."

Margaret didn't respond.

"You knew my mother was alive."

Still nothing.

I looked at Daniel.

"And you knew too?"

Daniel's silence answered for him.

I felt something inside me break.

The people I trusted most had all known.

Everyone.

Except me.

My mother slowly walked closer.

"I wanted to come back."

"Then why didn't you?"

She looked at Nathan.

"Because every time I tried, someone stopped me."

Nathan opened his folder.

He removed another document.

"Because Margaret threatened her."

Margaret immediately spoke.

"That's a lie."

My mother looked at her.

"No."

Her voice was calm.

"You told me if I came near Emily, you would make sure she lost everything."

The room went silent.

Claire looked shocked.

"You threatened her?"

Margaret looked at Claire.

"You don't understand what was at stake."

Claire shook her head.

"No. I understand now."

Nathan placed the document on the table.

"These are copies of the threats."

I looked down.

There were messages.

Old messages.

From Margaret.

To my mother.

The words were short.

Cold.

"If you come back, Emily will suffer."

My eyes filled with tears.

My mother reached for my hand.

"I thought staying away would protect you."

I pulled my hand back.

Not because I hated her.

Because I didn't know how to forgive someone who disappeared.

"I needed you."

She closed her eyes.

"I know."

Those two words hurt the most.

Because they were true.

Daniel suddenly spoke.

"This is all a distraction."

Everyone looked at him.

He stood near the window.

"You are all forgetting something."

Nathan turned.

"And what is that?"

Daniel looked at me.

"Emily still has no proof that I did anything."

The confidence was back.

The same confidence that terrified me before.

He continued.

"Everyone here has stories."

He pointed toward my mother.

"She disappeared."

Then toward Nathan.

"He lied about who he was."

Then toward Margaret.

"She protected the family."

His eyes returned to me.

"But I am still your husband."

I looked at him.

And I realized something.

Daniel believed marriage was enough to control me.

He believed I would still protect him.

But I wasn't the same woman who entered that house months ago.

Nathan opened the laptop again.

"There is one thing you haven't seen."

Daniel's face changed.

"What?"

Nathan played another video.

This one was different.

The quality was worse.

It looked like a hidden camera.

The location was Daniel's office.

The date was from one month before my accident.

Daniel entered the room.

Then Margaret.

But they weren't alone.

Someone else walked in.

Someone I didn't recognize.

A man wearing a dark coat.

Daniel looked nervous.

"I don't want to do this anymore."

The stranger replied:

"You already started."

Margaret placed a folder on the table.

"We cannot let Emily discover the truth."

My heart started racing.

Then the stranger spoke.

And I knew that voice.

I had heard it before.

Recently.

In the hospital.

On the phone.

"She was never supposed to survive."

My entire body froze.

Daniel looked at the screen.

The color disappeared from his face.

Because he knew who it was.

Nathan paused the video.

"Emily, there is something you need to understand."

I looked at him.

"What?"

Nathan looked toward Daniel.

"The person controlling this entire situation..."

He took a breath.

"...is not Margaret."

Nobody moved.

The hospital room became silent.

My mother looked terrified.

Claire covered her mouth.

Daniel stared at the floor.

Nathan pressed play again.

The hidden camera continued recording.

The stranger slowly turned toward the camera.

And for the first time, his face became visible.

I stopped breathing.

Because I knew him.

Everyone in that room knew him.

May you like

The man on the screen was someone who was supposed to have been dead for ten years...

And at that exact moment, my mother's phone began ringing with a call from his number.
