Chapter 3 - The Voice Behind The Recording

The person standing in the hospital doorway lowered their head.
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
I stared at the face I had known for years.
The person I had trusted.
The person who had sat at my wedding.
The person who had hugged me when I told them I was pregnant.
My hands started shaking.
"Why are you here?"
My voice was barely a whisper.
The person stepped into the room.
It was Daniel's younger sister, Claire.
And she looked like she hadn't slept in days.
"I know what you think," Claire said.
"But please let me explain."
Daniel immediately turned toward her.
"Claire, don't do this."
She looked at him.
And for the first time, I saw fear in her eyes.
Not the fear of being caught.
The fear of someone finally telling the truth.
"You told me you were going to fix everything," Claire said.
Daniel's face hardened.
"Be quiet."
Nathan stepped closer.
"She has the right to speak."
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"You don't know this family."
Nathan looked at him.
"No. But I know evidence."
Claire looked at me.
"I'm sorry."
Those two words hurt.
Because I had spent months wondering why everyone around me seemed to know something I didn't.
And now I was standing in a hospital bed, realizing the truth had been hiding in front of me.
"What happened that night?" I asked.
Claire looked down.
"I saw you."
My heart stopped.
"What?"
"I saw you in the room."
The entire room went silent.
Daniel's expression changed instantly.
"Claire."
She ignored him.
"I was coming home because I forgot my purse. I heard shouting."
My fingers tightened around the blanket.
"Whose voice?"
Claire looked at Daniel.
"His."
Daniel stepped forward.
"You are confused."
"No," Claire said.
Her voice became stronger.
"For once, I'm not confused."
I watched my husband's sister.
The same woman who had always defended him.
The same woman who told me I was lucky to have such a caring husband.
She looked broken.
"I heard Emily crying."
Tears filled my eyes.
I remembered that moment.
Calling for help.
Begging someone to stop.
Thinking someone would come.
Thinking someone would save me.
But nobody did.
Claire continued.
"I wanted to call the police."
Daniel's expression changed.
"But he stopped me."
The room became colder.
"He told me if I said anything, he would destroy my life too."
Daniel shook his head.
"You're lying."
Claire looked at him.
"You made me believe I had no choice."
Nathan opened the second recording device.
"Let's hear what was inside."
Daniel immediately moved.
"No."
Nathan pressed play.
A woman's voice filled the room.
Margaret.
Daniel's mother.
"I told you, Daniel. She has to learn her place."
My entire body froze.
The recording continued.
Daniel's voice followed.
"She's becoming difficult."
Margaret replied:
"Then make sure she understands what happens when someone threatens this family."
I closed my eyes.
I didn't want to hear more.
But I needed to.
Because for so long, I had questioned myself.
Maybe I was too sensitive.
Maybe I misunderstood.
Maybe I was the problem.
But the recording destroyed every lie I had told myself.
Nathan turned it off.
The silence afterward felt heavier.
Claire wiped her tears.
"I found something else."
She reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small USB drive.
"I copied this from Daniel's computer."
Daniel's face went pale.
"You stole from me?"
Claire looked at him.
"No."
She looked at me.
"I saved her."
Nathan took the USB drive.
"What's on it?"
Claire swallowed.
"Messages."
"Between Daniel and Margaret."
My stomach twisted.
Nathan connected it to his laptop.
The first message appeared.
Daniel:
"She is starting to ask questions."
Margaret:
"Then make sure she stops."
Another message appeared.
Daniel:
"What about the baby?"
Margaret:
"The baby will belong to this family."
I felt like the air disappeared from the room.
My child.
My unborn child.
They weren't just trying to silence me.
They were trying to control my baby.
Daniel saw my expression.
"Emily, listen to me."
I looked at him.
"Don't call me that like you still care."
His face changed.
For a moment, he looked like the man I married.
But then his expression hardened again.
"You don't understand what you're doing."
Nathan stepped between us.
"No. She finally understands."
Daniel looked around the room.
At the doctor.
The nurse.
Nathan.
Claire.
Everyone was watching him.
And he realized something.
The story he created was collapsing.
But then Daniel smiled.
A small, cold smile.
It confused me.
Because he wasn't scared anymore.
"What?" I asked.
He looked directly at me.
"You think this changes everything?"
Nathan noticed it too.
"Why are you smiling?"
Daniel didn't answer.
Instead, he reached into his coat pocket.
And pulled out his phone.
He pressed one button.
Then placed it on the table.
A message appeared.
My blood ran cold.
Because it was from someone I trusted.
Someone who knew exactly where I was.
Someone who had been helping Daniel from the beginning.
Nathan picked up the phone.
He read the message silently.
Then his expression changed.
"What is it?" I asked.
He looked at me.
And for the first time that night, Nathan looked afraid.
"The person who sent this message..."
He paused.
"Is already inside this hospital."
The lights above us flickered.
May you like
Then the hospital room door slowly opened...
And the person standing outside was holding my missing phone.
