Chapter 6 - The Name Hidden In My Father's Letter

The person standing in the hospital doorway did not speak.

They only looked at me.

Then they looked at the letter in my hand.

And I knew.

They were not surprised.

They were afraid.

My fingers tightened around the paper.

"Who are you?"

The question came out softer than I expected.

The person stepped into the room.

The hospital lights revealed her face.

My heart stopped.

Because I knew her.

Not from years ago.

Not from a photograph.

From every family gathering.

Every holiday dinner.

Every moment when I thought I was surrounded by people who loved me.

It was Margaret.

Daniel's mother.

She was holding the original copy of my father's letter.

The same letter that was supposed to be lost forever.

The same letter that contained the truth everyone tried to hide.

Daniel immediately stood up.

"Mom."

Margaret looked at him.

Not with anger.

With disappointment.

And somehow, that frightened me more.

"You were supposed to handle this," she said quietly.

The words made the entire room freeze.

I looked at Daniel.

"Handle what?"

Nobody answered.

Nathan slowly walked toward Margaret.

"You still have the original."

Margaret looked at him.

"So you found the copy."

Nathan's expression changed.

"You knew there was a copy?"

Margaret smiled faintly.

"I knew there would always be someone looking."

I felt my chest tighten.

This wasn't a random secret.

This was something that had been hidden for years.

Nathan took the letter from my hands.

"Emily deserves to know the truth."

Margaret looked at me.

For the first time, I saw something I never expected.

Regret.

But regret did not erase what she had done.

"You have no idea what your father discovered," Margaret said.

I stared at her.

"Then tell me."

She looked away.

"I can't."

My voice became louder.

"You can't?"

I pointed at the letter.

"You knew my father. You knew what happened. You knew Daniel was lying to me."

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

Margaret turned toward him.

"You should have never let her find this."

Those words hurt.

Because they confirmed everything.

They weren't denying it.

They were angry because I knew.

Claire covered her mouth.

She looked at Margaret.

"How could you?"

Margaret turned.

"You don't understand."

Claire shook her head.

"No. I understand."

Her voice trembled.

"You destroyed her life."

Margaret looked at her coldly.

"You were always too weak."

Claire stepped back.

I watched them.

And suddenly, something became clear.

This family had survived by making everyone afraid.

Everyone except me.

Because they never thought I would fight back.

Nathan placed the letter on the bed.

"Emily, read the rest."

I looked down.

My father's handwriting continued.

My hands shook as I read.

"Emily, if you ever discover this letter, it means they failed to keep you away from the truth."

I swallowed.

"I spent years investigating Daniel's family."

My eyes moved across the page.

"They were involved in illegal financial activities. They used their businesses to hide money and control people who worked for them."

I looked at Daniel.

He looked down.

The next line made my heart stop.

"But the person I trusted most inside that family was not Daniel."

I looked up.

Everyone was silent.

Nathan leaned closer.

I continued.

"The person who helped me collect evidence was someone close to Daniel."

My breathing slowed.

Someone close to Daniel.

Someone who knew the family.

Someone who had access.

The next sentence was partially damaged.

Only a few words remained.

"...she promised she would protect Emily..."

The rest was missing.

I looked at Nathan.

"Who was she?"

Nobody answered.

Then Margaret spoke.

"Your father was wrong."

I turned toward her.

"You expect me to believe that?"

She shook her head.

"No."

She looked at the letter.

"He was right about some things."

That shocked me.

Daniel stared at his mother.

"Mom."

Margaret ignored him.

"But he didn't understand the entire situation."

Nathan stepped forward.

"You were the person he suspected."

Margaret looked at him.

"And you were the person he trusted."

The room went silent.

I looked between them.

"What does that mean?"

Nathan didn't answer immediately.

That worried me.

Because Nathan always had an answer.

Always had evidence.

Always knew what to say.

But now...

He looked uncertain.

Margaret noticed.

And smiled.

"Tell her."

Nathan looked away.

I felt my heart sink.

"Tell me what?"

Margaret walked closer.

"Ask Nathan why your father contacted him."

I looked at Nathan.

"Why?"

Nathan remained silent.

"Why did my father trust you?"

His jaw tightened.

Then he finally spoke.

"Because I was investigating him."

My face went blank.

"What?"

Nathan took a deep breath.

"I wasn't your father's friend."

The room became completely silent.

"I was hired to investigate your father."

I stared at him.

Everything I believed about him started breaking apart.

"You lied to me."

Nathan shook his head.

"I protected information until I knew who was involved."

"But you still lied."

He didn't deny it.

Margaret looked satisfied.

"Now you understand."

I looked at her.

"What are you saying?"

She stepped closer.

"I'm saying the person who saved you tonight may be the same person who helped destroy your family."

Nathan's expression changed.

"Don't listen to her."

But the damage was already done.

Because I had learned one thing.

Everyone in my life had a secret.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had been hiding something.

A nurse suddenly entered the room.

"I'm sorry, but someone left this at the front desk for Emily Carter."

She held a small envelope.

My name was written on it.

Nobody moved.

The nurse placed it on the table.

Then left.

I stared at the envelope.

Nathan looked nervous.

Daniel looked terrified.

Margaret looked like she already knew what was inside.

I slowly opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

An old photograph.

A photograph of my father.

Standing beside a woman.

The same woman who wrote:

"She promised she would protect Emily."

I turned the picture over.

There was a sentence written on the back.

My hands started shaking.

Because beneath the words was a name.

A name I never expected to see.

May you like

The name of the person who had been protecting me all along...

And the hospital room door suddenly opened again.
