Chapter 2 - The Man Who Opened The Door

The man standing in the emergency room doorway didn't look familiar.
But the way Daniel stepped back told me everything.
He knew him.
The stranger held a thick black folder in one hand and a small recording device in the other.
The hospital lights reflected against his serious expression.
For the first time since I opened my eyes in that hospital bed, I saw fear on my husband's face.
"Who are you?" Daniel asked.
The man didn't answer immediately.
He walked toward my bed.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like he was making sure I knew I wasn't alone anymore.
"My name is Nathan Reed," he finally said.
Then he placed the folder on the table beside me.
"I was contacted three days ago by someone who believed Emily's life was in danger."
My breathing stopped.
Three days ago.
That was before everything happened.
Before the hospital.
Before Daniel's lie.
I looked at Nathan.
"Who contacted you?"
His eyes moved toward Daniel.
And Daniel immediately looked away.
That small movement told me more than any words could.
Nathan opened the folder.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Messages.
And something that made my hands start shaking.
A picture of me.
Taken inside my own house.
I had never seen it before.
I was standing in the kitchen.
Pregnant.
Smiling.
Completely unaware that someone was watching me.
"When did you take this?" I whispered.
Nathan looked at me.
"I didn't."
He turned the photograph around.
"Someone sent it to me."
Daniel suddenly stepped forward.
"You're making a mistake."
Nathan looked at him calmly.
"No. The mistake was thinking nobody would investigate."
The room became silent.
The nurse standing near the door slowly stepped back.
Even the doctor looked uncomfortable.
Daniel forced a laugh.
"This is ridiculous. My wife has been under stress. She gets emotional. Someone is taking advantage of her."
I stared at him.
My own husband was still trying to make me sound unstable.
Even now.
Even after everything.
Nathan looked at me.
"Emily, did Daniel ever tell you about the insurance policy?"
I frowned.
"What insurance policy?"
Daniel's face changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
A flash of panic.
Nathan removed another document.
"Six months ago, Daniel increased your life insurance coverage."
My fingers tightened around the hospital blanket.
"Why?"
Daniel answered quickly.
"Because we were having a baby. It was a normal decision."
Nathan shook his head.
"That would be true if he hadn't changed the beneficiary two weeks later."
My heart dropped.
I looked at Daniel.
"Changed it to who?"
Nobody spoke.
Nathan slowly placed another paper in front of me.
The name was there.
Margaret Carter.
Daniel's mother.
I felt like the room was spinning.
"My life insurance goes to your mother?"
Daniel's voice became defensive.
"Emily, you don't understand."
"No," I whispered.
"I understand perfectly."
For years, I had defended Daniel.
I had told my friends he was just stressed.
I had told myself his cold moments were temporary.
I had convinced myself Margaret was simply difficult.
But standing there, seeing those documents, I realized something terrifying.
This wasn't a sudden betrayal.
This had been planned.
Nathan reached into the folder again.
"There is more."
Daniel immediately interrupted.
"Enough."
Nathan looked at him.
"Are you worried about what comes next?"
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"Leave."
Nathan didn't move.
Instead, he pressed a button on the recording device.
A voice filled the room.
Daniel's voice.
My blood turned cold.
"I just need her to stop fighting."
My eyes widened.
The recording continued.
Margaret's voice followed.
"Once the baby is born, everything becomes easier."
I covered my mouth.
I couldn't breathe.
The doctor looked shocked.
The nurse immediately reached for the phone.
Daniel lunged forward.
"Turn that off!"
Nathan stepped between us.
"Stay away from her."
Daniel froze.
Because for the first time, someone was not afraid of him.
I stared at my husband.
"How long?"
My voice barely came out.
"How long were you planning this?"
Daniel looked at me.
And for one terrible moment, I thought I saw regret.
But it disappeared.
"I never wanted it to go this far."
Those words hurt more than if he had screamed.
Because they meant he knew exactly what he was doing.
Nathan picked up the folder.
"There is one more piece of evidence."
Daniel's face went pale.
"What?"
Nathan looked at me.
"The reason I came here tonight wasn't because of the recording."
He pulled out a small envelope.
"My contact left this for you."
I stared at the envelope.
My name was written across the front.
Emily.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
Inside was a handwritten note.
Only one sentence.
My heart stopped when I read it.
"Your husband wasn't the only person inside that room."
I looked up.
"What does that mean?"
Nathan didn't answer.
Instead, he looked toward the hospital hallway.
Someone was standing there.
Watching us.
A person I never expected to see.
Someone from Daniel's family.
Someone who should not have known I was awake.
The stranger slowly stepped into the doorway.
And whispered my name.
"Emily..."
I knew that voice.
It was the last voice I expected.
The person walked closer.
And placed something on my hospital table.
A second recording device.
Then Nathan said quietly:
"Before you listen to that, you need to know who gave it to me."
I turned toward him.
"Who?"
May you like
Nathan looked at the door.
And the person behind him stepped forward...
