Chapter 5 - The Woman Who Survived the Fire

The address led to a small house outside San Diego.

Elena arrived with Vale and two investigators.

Margaret stayed behind under protection.

The house appeared empty.

Elena knocked.

Nothing.

Again.

"Claire Bennett?"

Silence.

Vale stood behind her.

Elena tried the handle.

Unlocked.

Inside, the house was almost bare.

One cup.

One plate.

One chair.

A photograph sat beside the window.

Elena at her Naval Academy graduation.

She picked it up.

Her throat tightened.

Claire had watched her life.

A box contained newspaper clippings.

Promotions.

Awards.

Deployment announcements.

Every important moment.

"You knew where I was," Elena whispered.

A voice answered behind her.

"I always knew."

Elena turned.

The woman standing in the doorway was older than the photograph.

But the eyes were unmistakable.

Claire.

Neither moved.

Vale whispered her name.

Claire looked at him.

"Marcus."

Twenty-eight years disappeared from his face.

Elena didn't know whether to hug Claire or scream.

She chose neither.

"Why?"

Claire understood.

"Because they would have killed you."

"They almost did anyway."

"I know."

"You watched me grow up."

"From far away."

"You let me believe I had no biological family."

Claire's eyes filled.

"Because every person I loved became leverage."

Elena looked toward Vale.

"Apparently secrecy runs in the family."

Claire flinched.

Good.

Elena wanted someone else to hurt.

Then Claire told them the truth.

Kessler had survived the collapse of Harbor Light.

He disappeared before authorities could reach him.

His death years later had been fabricated.

He continued controlling a network of defense contractors.

Rourke worked for him.

"Where is Kessler?"

Claire looked at Elena.

"Closer than you think."

The assault in the training yard hadn't been planned.

Mercer was simply angry.

But the scar becoming visible triggered an automated alert.

Someone had been monitoring military databases for any reference connecting Elena to Harbor Light.

"Why now?"

"Because the archive can destroy people who are still powerful."

Elena handed Claire the photograph from the bunker.

"Who took this?"

Claire examined it.

Fear appeared immediately.

"We need to leave."

Vale moved toward the window.

A black SUV had stopped outside.

Claire whispered, "Too late."

The first shot shattered the window.

Everyone dropped.

Security returned fire.

Elena crawled toward Claire.

"Back exit!"

They moved through the kitchen.

Outside, another vehicle waited.

A driver opened the door.

Vale hesitated.

Claire shouted, "Trust me!"

They got inside.

The vehicle accelerated.

Elena looked backward.

The house disappeared behind them.

Then she noticed the driver.

Cole Mercer.

The sailor who had shoved her.

"Mercer?"

He looked into the mirror.

"Commander."

Vale reached for his weapon.

Mercer raised one hand.

"If I wanted you dead, Admiral, I would've left you at the house."

Elena stared.

"Where have you been?"

"Trying not to get killed."

"Who took you?"

"Rourke."

Claire leaned forward.

"Where is he?"

Mercer's jaw tightened.

"Waiting for us."

Elena's hand moved toward her sidearm.

Mercer shook his head.

"Not like that."

"Then how?"

"He says he wants to defect."

Claire laughed.

"Rourke doesn't defect."

Mercer looked at her through the mirror.

"He does when Thomas Kessler orders him killed."

Nobody spoke.

Mercer turned onto an isolated road.

Then he said something worse.

"Rourke also says Kessler knows Commander Ward found the bunker."

Elena stared at him.

"How?"

May you like

Mercer swallowed.

"Because someone standing in that bunker told him."
