Chapter 4 - What Admiral Vale Hid

Elena aimed her flashlight directly at Vale.

"Start talking."

"Not now."

"Especially now."

Footsteps moved outside the unit.

Vale raised one finger for silence.

A figure crossed the doorway.

Security officers shouted.

There was a struggle.

Then someone yelled that the area was clear.

The lights returned.

The intruder had escaped.

But Elena no longer cared about the intruder.

She cared about Vale.

"What did Claire mean?"

Vale sat on an old box.

For the first time, he looked old.

"Your mother trusted me."

"Clearly that was a mistake."

"Maybe."

He explained that Claire had contacted him two days before the explosion.

She possessed evidence proving Harbor Light's illegal operations.

But carrying physical documents was too dangerous.

So she divided the archive.

One part went to Margaret.

One part went to Vale.

The final component remained with Claire.

"What part did you have?"

"A decoding sequence."

"Where?"

Vale looked at her chest.

Elena understood before he spoke.

"No."

"The surgical pattern."

"No."

"Margaret created the scar deliberately."

Elena turned toward Margaret.

Margaret couldn't meet her eyes.

"You carved information into me?"

"I saved your life. The incision had to be there. Claire asked me to alter the closure pattern."

Elena felt sick.

"So my body became a filing cabinet."

"A key," Vale said.

She turned on him.

"Don't make it sound noble."

He accepted that.

The pattern encoded coordinates.

Modern imaging could reconstruct them.

Elena refused at first.

Then she thought of Mercer.

Missing because he'd shoved her.

Of Claire disappearing.

Of Margaret living under another name for decades.

"Do it."

Medical imaging revealed a numerical sequence.

Coordinates led to an abandoned naval communications bunker near the coast.

Inside, they found a sealed compartment.

It contained photographs, laboratory records, financial ledgers, and a list of names.

One name appeared repeatedly.

THOMAS KESSLER.

Another appeared near the bottom.

NATHAN ROURKE.

Then Elena saw something else.

MARCUS VALE.

She looked at him.

"Your name."

Vale didn't deny it.

"I was part of Harbor Light."

Margaret stepped back.

"You told me you only investigated it."

"I did later."

"Later?"

Vale stared at the file.

"I helped establish the original program."

Elena felt betrayed again.

Vale explained.

The legitimate Harbor Light had been his proposal after watching sailors die because field medicine couldn't reach them quickly enough.

Kessler corrupted it.

Vale discovered the truth too late.

"Claire tried to warn you," Elena said.

"Yes."

"And you didn't believe her."

"No."

That single word carried twenty-eight years of regret.

Elena looked through the documents.

One photograph showed Claire beside Vale.

They looked close.

Very close.

Elena noticed the date.

Then her own birth year.

She looked at Vale.

Vale saw the question.

"No."

"What?"

"Don't ask unless you're prepared for the answer."

Elena's heart began pounding.

Margaret whispered, "Marcus."

Elena stared at him.

"Who was my father?"

Vale couldn't answer.

That was answer enough.

Elena stepped backward.

"No."

"Claire and I—"

"No."

"We were together before—"

"Stop."

The admiral who had turned pale at her scar hadn't recognized a former patient.

He had recognized his daughter.

Elena felt the bunker closing around her.

"You knew."

"I suspected the moment I saw you."

"You asked my name."

"I needed certainty."

"Thirty-three years."

"I didn't know you survived."

"You keep saying that."

Vale's eyes filled.

"I'm sorry."

Elena turned away.

Then she heard Margaret gasp.

One of the files had fallen open.

A recent photograph was clipped inside.

Recent.

Not twenty-eight years old.

Claire Bennett stood outside a grocery store.

Alive.

The date stamp was six months earlier.

Elena grabbed it.

"Where did this come from?"

Nobody knew.

On the back was an address.

And underneath it, written by hand:

ELENA MUST NEVER FIND ME.

Elena stared at the photograph.

Her mother wasn't dead.

May you like

Her mother had been hiding.

And someone had known exactly where she was.
