Chapter 3 - My Mother's First Lie

"Step away from my daughter."

Margaret's voice didn't shake.

Vale slowly lifted his hands.

"Margaret."

"Don't call me that."

Elena stared at the woman who had raised her.

"What should he call you?"

Silence.

Margaret lowered the gun slightly.

"Mom."

"Elena, I can explain."

"Apparently everyone can explain. Nobody actually does."

Margaret looked exhausted.

Then she said, "My name was Dr. Margaret Shaw."

Vale closed his eyes.

Elena noticed.

"You knew that too."

"I suspected."

Margaret laughed bitterly.

"You suspected because you helped bury Harbor Light."

Vale's face hardened.

"I tried to stop it."

"You signed the closure order."

"To shut it down."

"And sealed every record afterward."

"To protect the surviving patients."

Margaret looked at Elena.

"See how easy it is? Everyone calls secrecy protection."

Elena stepped between them.

"Start with me."

Margaret finally lowered the weapon.

Twenty-eight years earlier, she had been a surgical nurse assigned to Harbor Light.

Claire Bennett had discovered children were being illegally included in experimental trauma procedures.

Elena had not originally been a patient.

She had been injured during an attempt to remove Claire from the facility.

"Who injured me?"

Margaret's eyes filled.

"The explosion."

"So there was an explosion."

"Yes. But it wasn't an accident."

Claire had gotten Elena out.

Margaret performed emergency surgery.

The scar saved Elena's life.

Rourke falsified her death.

Margaret took the child and disappeared.

"Why?"

"Because Claire made me promise."

Elena could barely speak.

"Where was Claire?"

Margaret looked down.

"She went back."

"For what?"

"Evidence."

"And?"

"She never came out."

Vale interrupted.

"We searched."

Margaret looked at him.

"You searched after somebody cleaned the site."

"Who?"

Margaret's answer came quietly.

"Rear Admiral Thomas Kessler."

Vale went still.

Elena knew the name.

Everyone in the Navy did.

Kessler had later become a celebrated defense executive and national security adviser.

He had died seven years ago.

Or supposedly had.

Elena thought of Rourke.

"You said dead men seem unusually active today."

Margaret didn't smile.

"Kessler built the private side of Harbor Light."

"Why would anyone still care twenty-eight years later?"

"Because Claire stole the master archive."

Elena looked at the key.

"Storage unit."

Margaret nodded.

"I never opened it."

"You had it all this time?"

"Claire told me only you could decide."

Elena felt anger rising.

"I was thirty-three before you decided I deserved to know I had another mother."

"I was afraid."

"So was I. Every time I asked where this scar came from."

Margaret began crying.

Elena wanted to remain angry.

Instead, she remembered scraped knees, school lunches, graduation, Margaret sitting through endless officer commissioning ceremonies with tears of pride.

The lies were real.

So was the love.

That made everything harder.

Vale's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

"Rourke escaped."

Margaret looked up sharply.

"Impossible."

"Apparently not."

Elena grabbed the storage key.

"Then we're done waiting."

The storage facility was forty minutes away.

Vale insisted on security.

Margaret insisted on coming.

The unit was registered under a dead corporation.

417 opened the lock.

Inside were ordinary boxes.

Old clothes.

Books.

A child's bicycle.

Elena stared.

"That's mine."

Margaret nodded.

"From before."

Elena touched the handlebars.

A memory flashed.

Claire running beside her.

A laugh.

Then gone.

At the rear of the unit stood a steel medical case.

They opened it.

Empty.

Except for a cassette recorder.

Elena pressed play.

Static.

Then a woman's voice.

Claire.

"If Elena is hearing this, Harbor Light found her."

Elena stopped breathing.

"Baby, I'm sorry."

Margaret covered her mouth.

Claire continued.

"The scar isn't what they're looking for. It's only the marker. The real evidence was hidden somewhere no one could remove without finding you first."

Elena looked at Vale.

"What does that mean?"

The tape clicked.

Then Claire said:

"Marcus Vale knows where to look."

Elena slowly turned.

Vale's face had lost all color.

Before he could speak, the storage facility lights went out.

Metal slammed somewhere outside.

Margaret whispered Elena's name.

Footsteps approached.

Vale reached for his weapon.

Then Claire's recording continued in the darkness.

May you like

One final sentence.

"If Marcus tells you he doesn't know, he's lying."
