Chapter 8 - The Daughter Who Lived In Secret

“Gabriel…”

The voice came from the doorway.

A voice he knew better than anyone.

A voice he had been searching for since the moment he saw the empty nursery.

Gabriel turned slowly.

The darkness hid the person’s face.

But he already knew.

“Norah…”

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The woman standing there looked nothing like the woman who had disappeared.

Her hair was shorter.

Her face was tired.

Her eyes carried years of fear and exhaustion.

But it was her.

His wife.

The mother of his children.

The woman he thought he had lost.

Gabriel stared at her.

He wanted to say a thousand things.

Where were you?

Why did you leave?

Why did you lie?

Why did you make me believe my children were gone?

But none of those questions came out.

Because standing in front of him was the woman he had spent every second trying to find.

Norah stepped into the room.

Her eyes immediately moved to the photograph on the computer screen.

Then to the files.

Then to Elena.

Finally, she looked at Gabriel.

“You found everything.”

Gabriel’s expression hardened.

“No.”

His voice was quiet.

“I found pieces.”

Norah looked down.

“And the pieces are worse than the truth.”

Gabriel stepped closer.

“You knew.”

A pause.

“You knew about Lily.”

Norah closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

The answer hurt more than denial.

Gabriel laughed softly.

“You knew I had a daughter.”

“I knew.”

“And you still left.”

“I left because I had to.”

“You took my children.”

Norah looked at him.

“No.”

Her voice broke.

“I saved them.”

The room became silent.

Gabriel looked at her.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Norah took a breath.

“Because if I stayed, they would have taken all three of them.”

Gabriel froze.

“All three?”

Norah nodded.

“Your twins.”

Then she looked at the screen.

“And Lily.”

The name still felt strange to Gabriel.

A child who existed.

A child who knew him.

A child he had never held.

“Where is she?”

Norah looked away.

“She’s safe.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“It’s the only answer I can give you right now.”

Gabriel’s anger returned.

“You don’t get to decide that anymore.”

Norah looked at him.

A sadness appeared in her eyes.

“I know.”

That stopped him.

Because he expected resistance.

He expected excuses.

Not acceptance.

“I know I hurt you.”

Her voice became quieter.

“I know you think I betrayed you.”

Gabriel looked away.

“You did.”

Norah nodded.

“Yes.”

The honesty surprised him.

“But I betrayed your trust because I was trying to protect your life.”

Gabriel stared.

“What does that mean?”

Norah walked toward the table.

She picked up the photograph of the child outside the estate.

“Her name is Lily Costa.”

Gabriel looked at the picture.

“She’s seven years old.”

“Yes.”

“She has been near me this entire time?”

Norah nodded.

“She lived here.”

His expression changed.

“What?”

“Not inside the main house.”

Norah touched the photograph.

“Your father created a private residence on the other side of the property.”

Gabriel felt sick.

A hidden home.

A hidden child.

A hidden life.

“Why would my father do that?”

Norah looked at Elena.

“Because he was afraid.”

Gabriel turned.

“My father was afraid of a child?”

“No.”

Norah shook her head.

“He was afraid of what Lily represented.”

“What?”

Norah looked directly at him.

“The truth about your family.”

The words landed heavily.

Gabriel looked at Elena.

“You knew.”

Elena looked away.

“Yes.”

“You all knew.”

Nobody answered.

That was answer enough.

Gabriel walked toward the wall.

His entire life had been built on information controlled by other people.

His father.

His advisors.

His wife.

Everyone had decided what he could handle.

Everyone except him.

“Tell me everything.”

Norah looked at him.

“Are you sure?”

Gabriel turned.

“I spent years believing my daughter didn’t exist.”

His voice cracked slightly.

“I spent years thinking I lost my children because I wasn’t there.”

He looked at her.

“I’m done being protected.”

Norah nodded.

Then she opened the folder.

Inside was another file.

A medical report.

A birth record.

And a photograph.

She placed them in front of him.

“This is why I disappeared.”

Gabriel looked down.

The first document was a DNA report.

His name.

Lily’s name.

A confirmed match.

The second document was older.

Much older.

A record from the day Lily was born.

But something was wrong.

The mother’s name had been changed.

The original name had been crossed out.

Gabriel looked at Norah.

“Who changed this?”

Norah hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Your father.”

Gabriel’s face changed.

“Why?”

“Because Lily was born from a relationship he wanted erased.”

Gabriel stared.

“What relationship?”

Norah looked at him.

“The woman in the photograph.”

The hospital room.

The newborn baby.

The woman beside his father.

Gabriel remembered.

The woman he had seen.

The woman he didn’t recognize.

“That was Lily’s mother?”

Norah nodded.

“Yes.”

“Who was she?”

Norah took a breath.

“Your father’s first wife.”

Gabriel froze.

“My father was married before?”

“Yes.”

“No one told me.”

“Because nobody wanted you to know.”

He looked at Elena.

“Did you know?”

She nodded slowly.

“Your father made sure everyone knew what would happen if they spoke.”

Gabriel looked back at Norah.

“Where is Lily’s mother?”

Norah became quiet.

Too quiet.

Gabriel noticed immediately.

“What?”

Norah’s eyes filled with fear.

“She disappeared.”

“When?”

“The same week Lily was hidden.”

Gabriel felt his chest tighten.

“Did my father kill her?”

“No.”

Norah answered quickly.

“He didn’t.”

“Then who?”

Before Norah could answer, the computer screen suddenly turned on again.

Everyone turned.

A new video appeared.

No title.

No file name.

Just a recording.

Norah stepped backward.

“No.”

Gabriel looked at her.

“You know this.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

But her face said otherwise.

The video started.

A man appeared on the screen.

Older.

Sitting in a dark room.

Gabriel recognized him immediately.

His father’s closest friend.

The man who had disappeared after his father’s death.

The man everyone believed had fled.

He looked directly into the camera.

“Gabriel.”

A pause.

“If you are seeing this, then Norah failed to keep you away.”

Norah’s face went pale.

The man continued.

“But there is one thing you still don’t know.”

Gabriel stepped closer.

The man leaned toward the camera.

“Lily was never the child your father was trying to hide.”

Silence.

Gabriel stopped breathing.

The man whispered:

“She was the child he was trying to protect.”

The screen flickered.

Then a final message appeared.

A location.

And beneath it:

"Your father is not dead."

Gabriel stared.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone in the room knew the same thing.

If that message was true…

everything they believed about the last twelve years was a lie.

Then Gabriel’s phone vibrated.

May you like

A new message appeared.

From his father’s number.
