Chapter 5 - The Child Hidden From Gabriel

The photograph slipped from Gabriel Costa’s hand.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Not Elena.
Not the man standing across from him.
Not even Gabriel himself.
The words were impossible.
They were not supposed to exist.
"They were never your only children."
The sentence kept repeating inside his mind.
Gabriel looked at the photograph on the table.
Two newborn babies.
His son.
His daughter.
The children he had spent the last hours believing he had lost.
But now someone was telling him there was more.
Another child.
Another secret.
Another lie.
“Explain.”
Gabriel’s voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
The kind of quiet that made people afraid.
The man standing near the doorway did not move.
For years, Gabriel had trusted him.
Trusted his judgment.
Trusted his advice.
Trusted him with things Gabriel would never tell anyone else.
And now he was standing inside a hidden room beneath Gabriel’s own house.
Holding secrets that could destroy everything.
“Who are you talking about?”
The man looked at him.
“You know.”
Gabriel stepped forward.
“No.”
His eyes hardened.
“I don’t.”
The man looked toward Elena.
“She didn’t tell him?”
Elena shook her head.
“I was waiting.”
Gabriel turned.
“Waiting for what?”
Elena looked at him.
“For you to be ready.”
A bitter smile crossed Gabriel’s face.
“Ready?”
He pointed around the hidden room.
“You all built a secret world around me.”
His voice became sharper.
“My wife disappeared.”
“My children were taken.”
“My house had hidden rooms.”
“My father’s secrets are buried under my own floor.”
“And now you’re telling me I had another child?”
Nobody answered.
Because they knew he was right.
Gabriel looked back at the man.
“Tell me.”
The man lowered his eyes.
“Her name was Lily.”
Gabriel froze.
The name meant nothing.
And somehow, that made it worse.
“When?”
The man hesitated.
“Six years ago.”
Gabriel stared.
Six years.
Before Norah.
Before the twins.
Before everything.
“That’s impossible.”
The man said nothing.
Gabriel walked closer.
“You’re lying.”
“I wish I was.”
The words were quiet.
But they carried something Gabriel hated.
Truth.
“Where is she?”
The man looked away.
“I don’t know.”
Gabriel’s expression changed.
“You don’t know?”
“No.”
“Then why are you telling me?”
“Because someone else does.”
The room became silent again.
Gabriel looked at Elena.
Then the man.
“Who?”
Before anyone could answer, the lights returned.
The sudden brightness revealed something on the table.
A new envelope.
Nobody had placed it there.
Gabriel noticed immediately.
He approached.
His name was written on it.
Again.
But this time, there was something else.
A small symbol in the corner.
A symbol he had seen before.
On his father’s old documents.
On the hidden files.
On the photograph of Norah.
Gabriel opened the envelope.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
A location.
And one sentence.
"Come alone if you want to know why your daughter was taken."
Gabriel read it twice.
Then looked up.
“Who sent this?”
Elena’s face changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
“You know that symbol.”
Gabriel looked at her.
“Do you?”
She nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Elena took a breath.
“The Costa Foundation.”
Gabriel frowned.
“What?”
His father’s charity organization.
A public image.
A company built to help families.
Schools.
Hospitals.
Communities.
Something Gabriel had always believed separated his family from the darker parts of their business.
“No.”
Elena looked at him.
“Yes.”
“That organization ended years ago.”
“Officially.”
Gabriel felt something cold move through him.
“Officially?”
Elena walked toward the files.
“Your father created it for one reason.”
“To help people?”
She shook her head.
“To find them.”
Gabriel stared.
“What does that mean?”
Elena opened another folder.
Inside were hundreds of names.
People.
Families.
Children.
Dates.
Gabriel scanned the pages.
Then stopped.
A name caught his attention.
Lily Bell.
His fingers went cold.
“Why is her last name Bell?”
Nobody answered.
Gabriel looked at the man.
“You know.”
The man nodded.
“Yes.”
“Tell me.”
The man closed his eyes.
“Because Norah’s last name was Bell too.”
Gabriel stepped backward.
“No.”
The pieces started connecting.
Too many pieces.
Too quickly.
Norah Bell.
Lily Bell.
The hidden documents.
The warnings.
The disappearance.
“Norah knew.”
“Yes.”
“She knew about Lily.”
“Yes.”
“And she never told me.”
The man looked at him.
“She tried.”
Gabriel’s expression changed.
“When?”
“Before the wedding.”
The room went silent.
Gabriel remembered.
The first months with Norah.
The way she always hesitated before asking about his family.
The way she avoided certain conversations.
The way she looked uncomfortable whenever someone mentioned his father.
He thought it was because she was shy.
Because she was adjusting to his world.
Maybe he was wrong.
“She married me because of this?”
The man shook his head.
“No.”
“Then why?”
“Because she loved you.”
Gabriel looked away.
That answer hurt more than a lie.
Because he wanted to hate her.
It was easier.
But every clue pointed to the same thing.
Norah had been protecting him.
Even while leaving him.
His phone suddenly vibrated.
Everyone looked at it.
Unknown number.
Gabriel answered.
Nobody spoke.
Then a child’s voice came through.
Small.
Quiet.
“Daddy?”
Gabriel stopped breathing.
The room disappeared.
The only thing he heard was that voice.
A child calling him.
A child he had never met.
A child who somehow knew him.
“Who is this?”
Silence.
Then:
“I’m scared.”
Gabriel gripped the phone.
“Where are you?”
The child whispered.
“Mom said not to tell you.”
His heart broke.
Because he knew that voice.
Not personally.
But emotionally.
It was the voice of a child who had been taught to be afraid.
“Who is your mother?”
A pause.
Then the child answered.
“Norah.”
Gabriel closed his eyes.
The child continued.
“She said you would come when you knew the truth.”
Gabriel looked at Elena.
Everyone was listening.
“Where are you?”
The line became distorted.
The child whispered one final sentence.
“Daddy…”
A pause.
“She told me never to trust the man standing beside you.”
Gabriel slowly turned.
The man behind him went completely still.
Because the child was not talking about a stranger.
The child was talking about him.
The phone screen went black.
Disconnected.
Gabriel stared at the man.
The same man who had protected him for years.
The same man who had helped Norah escape.
The same man who had brought him the truth.
Then Gabriel noticed something.
The man’s hand was bleeding.
And wrapped around his wrist was a hospital bracelet.
A bracelet from six years ago.
With one name printed across it.
Lily Bell.
Gabriel reached for the bracelet.
The man stepped back.
May you like
And for the first time in years…
he looked afraid.
