Chapter 4 - The Man Who Was Always There

The basement door closed.

Slowly.

Silently.

Gabriel Costa stared at the wooden surface in front of him.

For several seconds, his mind refused to accept what had just happened.

Someone had been outside.

Someone had been listening.

Someone had known he was down there.

Elena moved first.

“Gabriel.”

Her voice was low.

Urgent.

“Do not open that door.”

Gabriel looked at her.

“Why?”

Elena’s face tightened.

“Because whoever closed it wanted you to.”

That answer made his anger rise.

He walked toward the door.

“Someone enters my house, hides secrets from me, takes my wife and children away, and now I’m supposed to stand here?”

“Gabriel.”

“I’m done being kept in the dark.”

He grabbed the handle.

It did not move.

Locked.

From the outside.

His expression changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

Someone wanted to trap them.

Someone wanted them together.

Elena stepped closer.

“There’s another exit.”

Gabriel looked at her.

“You built a hidden basement under my house?”

“No.”

She looked around.

“Norah did.”

That stopped him.

Norah.

Everything always came back to Norah.

The quiet woman he thought he understood.

The woman who had carried his children.

The woman who disappeared without a single goodbye.

The woman who had somehow known more about his life than he did.

Gabriel looked around the hidden room again.

“What else did my wife hide from me?”

Elena walked toward the far wall.

“She didn’t hide things because she wanted power.”

She touched an old wooden panel.

“She hid them because she was afraid.”

The panel opened.

Behind it was a narrow passage.

Gabriel stared.

“How long has this been here?”

“Long enough.”

“Who built it?”

Elena looked at him.

“Your father.”

The answer hit harder than expected.

Gabriel’s father had been dead for twelve years.

At least, that was what he believed.

He stepped into the passage.

The walls were covered with old photographs.

Documents.

Names.

Dates.

A history nobody had told him.

Gabriel stopped at the first photograph.

It showed his father standing beside another man.

A younger version of himself.

A man Gabriel recognized immediately.

His former mentor.

The man who had introduced him to the world of business.

The man who had helped him build the Costa empire.

The same man whose name appeared on Norah’s hidden photograph.

Gabriel removed the picture.

“Why was he with my father?”

Elena did not answer.

Because she knew the answer would change everything.

Gabriel looked back.

“Elena.”

She sighed.

“Your father trusted him.”

“And?”

“And your father made one mistake.”

“What mistake?”

Elena looked at the photograph.

“He believed loyalty could not be bought.”

Gabriel continued walking.

The passage ended at another room.

This one was larger.

A hidden office.

An underground archive.

There were shelves filled with files.

Thousands of pages.

Records.

Photographs.

Names.

Gabriel walked toward the nearest shelf.

A folder caught his attention.

Costa Family.

He opened it.

Inside were documents about him.

His childhood.

His business.

His relationships.

Everything.

But one file was different.

Norah Costa.

Gabriel froze.

He opened it carefully.

The first page contained a photograph.

Norah.

Before she met him.

Before their marriage.

Before the twins.

A note was attached.

Subject: Norah Bell.

Gabriel’s eyes narrowed.

“Bell?”

Elena looked away.

Gabriel noticed.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“You knew her last name wasn’t Costa.”

“She changed it.”

“Why?”

Elena was silent.

Gabriel slammed the file onto the table.

“Stop protecting everyone.”

Elena looked at him.

“I’m not protecting them.”

“Then tell me.”

She took a breath.

“Norah wasn’t chosen by accident.”

Gabriel stared.

“What does that mean?”

“She was placed near you.”

The room went silent.

Gabriel laughed once.

“No.”

“It’s true.”

“My wife loved me.”

Elena looked at him sadly.

“I believe she did.”

“Then don’t tell me she was part of some plan.”

“She wasn’t.”

Elena stepped closer.

“That’s what changed everything.”

Gabriel looked confused.

“Explain.”

“Norah was supposed to watch you.”

His expression hardened.

“Watch me?”

“Yes.”

“Who sent her?”

Elena hesitated.

Then said:

“The same person who has been watching your family for years.”

Gabriel’s hands tightened.

“Who?”

Before Elena could answer, the lights suddenly turned off.

Darkness filled the room.

Gabriel immediately reached for his phone.

No signal.

Again.

A sound came from the archive hallway.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Controlled.

Someone was walking toward them.

Elena whispered:

“He found us.”

Gabriel looked at her.

“Who?”

She did not answer.

The footsteps became louder.

Closer.

Gabriel moved in front of Elena.

Not because he trusted her.

Because whatever was coming had made her afraid.

The door at the end of the archive opened.

A man stepped inside.

Older.

Calm.

Completely relaxed.

Like he belonged there.

Gabriel recognized him.

The person who had been beside him for years.

The person who had advised him.

The person who had helped him survive countless threats.

His closest friend.

His business partner.

The man he trusted more than anyone.

Gabriel stared.

“No.”

The man looked at him.

“Hello, Gabriel.”

His voice was calm.

Almost gentle.

Gabriel’s anger exploded.

“You knew.”

The man said nothing.

“You knew where Norah was.”

Still nothing.

“You helped her disappear.”

The man looked toward Elena.

Then back at Gabriel.

“I helped her survive.”

Gabriel stepped forward.

“Where are my children?”

The man’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Gabriel noticed.

A small hesitation.

A small reaction.

Enough.

“You know.”

The man looked down.

Then whispered:

“Gabriel, there is something you need to understand.”

“What?”

“Norah did not run from you.”

He paused.

“She ran from me.”

The room went silent.

Gabriel stared.

“Why?”

The man reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Placed it on the table.

Then said:

“Because she discovered what I did before you did.”

Gabriel looked at the envelope.

His name was written on it.

Again.

Another message.

Another secret.

He reached for it.

The man stopped him.

“Before you open that, you need to know something.”

Gabriel looked up.

“What?”

The man’s eyes became serious.

“Your children were never the reason Norah disappeared.”

A pause.

“They were the reason she was allowed to live.”

Gabriel felt his stomach drop.

The man stepped backward.

And before Gabriel could ask another question, the hidden archive door behind him opened, revealing someone standing in the darkness.

Someone Gabriel had never expected to see.

Someone holding a photograph of the twins.

May you like

And whispering one sentence:

“Gabriel… they were never your only children.”
