Chapter 3 - The Woman Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

The basement door opened slowly.
Gabriel Costa stood at the bottom of the staircase, staring into the darkness.
For five years, he had lived with the memory of Elena Moretti.
A woman everyone believed was gone.
A woman whose disappearance had changed the people around her.
A woman whose name nobody mentioned anymore.
But now her voice had returned.
And it was coming from his own house.
“Gabriel…”
The whisper came again.
His entire body became still.
He did not move because he was afraid.
He moved because his mind was trying to understand something impossible.
A dead person could not call his name.
A dead person could not stand inside his mansion.
A dead person could not be connected to Norah’s disappearance.
But the evidence was everywhere.
The photograph.
The hidden video.
The message.
The voice.
Gabriel slowly stepped closer.
The basement lights flickered.
One by one.
The first.
Then the second.
Then the third.
Like someone had turned them on moments before he arrived.
He reached the bottom step.
The basement was not what he expected.
For years, Gabriel had known every room in this mansion.
Every hallway.
Every security point.
Every hidden entrance.
But this place was different.
There was another room behind the walls.
A room he had never known existed.
A small table sat in the center.
On it were documents.
Photographs.
And a baby blanket.
Gabriel picked it up.
His hands tightened.
It was the same blanket from the nursery.
The one he had touched hours earlier.
The one that had belonged to his missing children.
Then he noticed the photograph beneath it.
His breathing changed.
It showed Norah.
Holding the twins.
But standing beside her was another person.
Elena.
Alive.
Real.
Smiling.
Gabriel stared at the image.
His entire understanding of the past collapsed.
Five years.
Five years of believing a lie.
Five years of accepting that Elena was gone.
He grabbed the photograph.
“No…”
His voice was barely audible.
A sound came from behind him.
Gabriel turned immediately.
A woman stood near the doorway.
Older.
Different.
But unmistakable.
Elena Moretti.
She looked at him with tired eyes.
Not angry.
Not afraid.
Just exhausted.
“Hello, Gabriel.”
He could not speak.
The woman everyone buried was standing in front of him.
“How?”
That was the only word he managed.
Elena looked down.
“Because everyone wanted you to believe I was dead.”
Gabriel’s expression hardened.
“Who?”
She did not answer immediately.
Instead, she looked toward the photograph in his hand.
“Norah found out before you did.”
Gabriel stepped closer.
“What did she find out?”
Elena looked at him.
“That your family was never as safe as you thought.”
A cold feeling moved through him.
“My family?”
Elena nodded.
“Not the Costa family.”
She paused.
“Your real family.”
Gabriel stared.
He hated those words.
Because they sounded like something from a nightmare.
A secret.
A hidden truth.
A life built on lies.
“You helped Norah leave?”
Elena looked away.
“Yes.”
The answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
Gabriel’s jaw tightened.
“Why?”
“Because she asked me.”
“That’s not enough.”
“No.”
Elena looked at him.
“It wasn’t.”
She walked toward the table.
She picked up one of the documents.
“Norah discovered something while she was pregnant.”
Gabriel followed her eyes.
“What?”
Elena placed the document in front of him.
A medical report.
But not about the twins.
About Norah.
Gabriel scanned the page.
Then froze.
The date was three months earlier.
The diagnosis was hidden beneath a black marker.
Someone had tried to cover it.
Gabriel looked at Elena.
“What is this?”
“Norah was being monitored.”
“By who?”
Elena did not answer.
Again.
The silence angered him.
“Stop protecting them.”
“I’m not protecting them.”
Her voice became sharper.
“I’m protecting you.”
Gabriel laughed once.
A cold, empty sound.
“My wife disappeared with my children. Someone inside my house betrayed me. A woman who was supposed to be dead is standing in my basement. And you think I need protection?”
Elena looked at him.
“Yes.”
The certainty in her voice made him stop.
“Because if you knew everything tonight…”
She looked toward the ceiling.
“…you would go after the wrong person.”
Gabriel stepped closer.
“Tell me the truth.”
Elena was silent.
Then she reached into her coat.
She removed a small envelope.
“This is why Norah left.”
Gabriel took it.
His name was written on the front.
Again.
His name.
Everyone had been leaving messages for him.
Everyone had known he would eventually discover the truth.
He opened it.
Inside was a single page.
Norah’s handwriting.
Gabriel,
If you are reading this, Elena decided you were ready.
I’m sorry I left without telling you.
I wanted to hate you.
I tried.
But the truth is, I was never running away from you.
I was running away from what was coming.
Gabriel stopped reading.
His fingers shook.
He continued.
The children are safe.
But they will not stay safe if they know where we are.
You need to find the person who started this.
Not the person who helped me leave.
The person who forced me to run.
At the bottom of the page was one sentence.
One sentence that made Gabriel’s blood run cold.
He read it again.
Then again.
"Your enemy has been sitting at your table for years."
Gabriel lowered the paper.
“Who?”
Elena looked at him.
“I don’t know.”
He stared.
“You expect me to believe that?”
“I know pieces.”
“Then give me the pieces.”
Elena walked toward the table.
She opened another folder.
Inside were photographs.
Pictures of Gabriel.
His business meetings.
His family dinners.
His private moments.
Someone had been watching him.
For years.
Gabriel picked up one photograph.
It showed him and Norah at dinner.
On the back was a date.
The same night Norah first became pregnant.
Another photograph.
Another date.
Another secret.
Then he found one that made him stop.
It showed Norah leaving a clinic.
She was not alone.
A man stood beside her.
Gabriel recognized him.
His closest advisor.
The person who had handled his finances.
The person who had been around his family for years.
Gabriel looked at Elena.
“No.”
Elena’s expression told him everything.
“Yes.”
He dropped the photograph onto the table.
“That’s impossible.”
“Gabriel…”
“He helped me.”
“I know.”
“He protected my family.”
Elena looked down.
“That is exactly why you never suspected him.”
The room became silent.
Gabriel’s phone suddenly vibrated.
He looked at the screen.
A message.
From an unknown number.
He opened it.
A photograph appeared.
His children.
Sleeping peacefully.
Alive.
Safe.
Gabriel stopped breathing.
Then another message appeared.
You found Elena.
Good.
Now she cannot hide anymore.
His eyes moved to the final line.
Tomorrow, you will learn why your wife disappeared.
But first…
Look behind you.
Gabriel slowly lifted his head.
Elena’s face changed.
Fear appeared for the first time.
Not for herself.
For him.
Because she was looking past his shoulder.
At the basement doorway.
Gabriel turned around.

The door that had been open seconds earlier…
was now slowly closing from the outside.
