Chapter 6 - The Daughter Who Was Erased

Gabriel reached for the bracelet.

The man stepped back.

And for the first time in years…

he looked afraid.

Gabriel noticed.

Not guilt.

Not surprise.

Fear.

Real fear.

The kind that appeared when someone knew a truth had finally caught up with them.

“Explain.”

Gabriel’s voice was low.

The man looked at the bracelet around his wrist.

Then at Gabriel.

“I didn’t want you to find out this way.”

Gabriel laughed quietly.

A cold, empty sound.

“You didn’t want me to find out?”

He stepped closer.

“You hid an entire child from me.”

The man remained silent.

“You knew Lily existed.”

“Yes.”

“You knew she was mine.”

A pause.

Then:

“Yes.”

The room felt smaller.

Gabriel stared at him.

Six years.

Six years of his life.

Six years of believing he understood his own family.

And someone had erased a child from his world.

“Who told you to hide her?”

The man looked away.

That was enough.

Gabriel saw the answer before hearing it.

“Who?”

The man finally spoke.

“Your father.”

Gabriel froze.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“No.”

The man looked at him.

“Gabriel…”

“My father died.”

“Your father left instructions before he died.”

Gabriel shook his head.

“Stop.”

His voice became sharper.

“Stop using my dead father to explain every secret in my life.”

The man did not argue.

Because he knew Gabriel needed to see it himself.

He reached into the folder beside him.

He pulled out a document.

Then placed it on the table.

Gabriel looked down.

It was a legal agreement.

A custody arrangement.

A document dated six years earlier.

His name was on it.

But the signature was not his.

Gabriel stared.

“That isn’t my signature.”

“No.”

“Then why is my name there?”

The man looked at him.

“Because someone wanted it to look like you knew.”

Gabriel picked up the paper.

His eyes moved across every line.

A child.

A hidden identity.

A sealed record.

Everything had been carefully arranged.

Then he saw the final page.

A handwritten note.

His father’s handwriting.

Gabriel recognized it immediately.

His father had taught him to write that way when he was a child.

The note contained only one sentence.

"Protect Gabriel from the truth until he is strong enough to survive it."

Gabriel dropped the paper.

“No.”

Elena stepped forward.

“Gabriel…”

“No.”

He looked at both of them.

“My father knew.”

Nobody answered.

“My father knew about Lily.”

Silence.

“He knew about Norah.”

Silence.

“He knew everything.”

Elena lowered her eyes.

“Yes.”

Gabriel walked away.

For the first time since discovering the nursery, he looked lost.

Not angry.

Not powerful.

Just lost.

Because anger was easier.

Anger meant someone was responsible.

But this?

This meant the people who loved him had made decisions about his life without him.

He looked at the photograph of Lily.

A child he had never held.

A child who knew his voice.

A child who had called him Daddy.

“Where is she?”

The man looked at him.

“I don’t know.”

Gabriel turned immediately.

“You said you protected her.”

“I did.”

“Then where is she?”

The man’s expression changed.

“She was moved.”

“By who?”

“Norah.”

Gabriel stopped.

“Norah?”

“Yes.”

“Why would Norah move Lily?”

The man hesitated.

Then answered:

“Because someone found out Lily was alive.”

Gabriel’s heart sank.

“Who?”

The man looked toward the hidden room entrance.

“Someone who has been searching for her since the day she disappeared.”

Gabriel followed his gaze.

The silence became unbearable.

Then his phone vibrated.

Everyone looked at the screen.

A new message.

Unknown number.

Gabriel opened it.

A photograph appeared.

A little girl sitting beside a window.

Her face was partially visible.

But he knew.

Somehow, he knew.

Lily.

Below the picture was a message.

"She remembers you."

Gabriel’s fingers tightened.

Another message appeared.

"Ask Norah why she erased your daughter."

His eyes moved to Elena.

“What does this mean?”

Elena looked confused.

“I don’t know.”

Gabriel stared at the phone.

A third message arrived.

This one was a video.

He pressed play.

The screen showed Norah.

Not from the hidden basement.

Not from the previous recording.

This was recent.

She looked directly into the camera.

“Gabriel.”

Her voice shook.

“If you are watching this, it means they found Lily.”

Gabriel stopped breathing.

Norah continued.

“I need you to listen carefully.”

She looked over her shoulder.

Like she was afraid someone was nearby.

“Everything I did was to protect our children.”

Gabriel watched silently.

“The twins.”

She paused.

“And Lily.”

His eyes widened.

Norah knew.

She knew he knew.

“I never wanted to keep her from you.”

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“But your father was right about one thing.”

Gabriel leaned closer.

“He said if you knew about Lily too soon…”

Norah looked directly into the camera.

“…they would use her against you.”

The video flickered.

Then Norah whispered:

“Gabriel, there is someone inside your family who never wanted Lily to be found.”

The screen went black.

Gabriel stared.

No one moved.

Then Elena spoke softly.

“She knew.”

Gabriel looked at her.

“She knew someone was after Lily.”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Elena looked at the floor.

“I don’t know.”

Gabriel’s anger returned.

“You keep saying that.”

“Because it’s true.”

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“You know more than you’re telling me.”

Elena’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Because I promised Norah.”

Gabriel froze.

“What promise?”

“That if something happened…”

She swallowed.

“I would protect you.”

Gabriel looked away.

“I don’t need protection.”

Elena whispered:

“That’s what Lily’s mother said too.”

The words stopped him.

“Her mother?”

Elena nodded.

“Before Norah.”

Gabriel frowned.

“What are you talking about?”

Nobody answered.

Then the man who had been silent all this time finally spoke.

“Gabriel…”

His voice was different.

Older.

Heavier.

“There is something else your father hid from you.”

Gabriel turned.

“What?”

The man looked at him.

“Lily was not the first child they tried to erase.”

The room went cold.

Gabriel stared.

“What does that mean?”

The man reached into his jacket.

He removed another photograph.

But he did not hand it over.

Because even he looked afraid of what was in it.

“Before Lily…”

He paused.

“There was another baby.”

Gabriel’s face changed.

“No.”

The man placed the photograph on the table.

Gabriel slowly picked it up.

The image showed a hospital room.

A woman.

A newborn child.

And standing beside the bed…

was Gabriel’s father.

On the back of the photograph were three words written in black ink.

Words that made Gabriel’s hands start shaking.

"Your first child."

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

Gabriel answered.

A child’s voice whispered.

“Daddy…”

He froze.

May you like

Because this time…

it was not Lily.
