Chapter 9 - The Name on the Recording

The man was not Anthony Castellano.

He was his younger brother, Luca.

Vincent had believed Luca dead for fifteen years.

Luca had staged his death and quietly maintained Anthony’s offshore network.

Camilla had not invented the conspiracy.

She inherited it.

Luca controlled it.

Daniel had come close enough to expose him.

Vincent finally understood why Daniel’s investigation seemed to contain contradictions.

They had been hunting visible criminals while an invisible man moved behind them.

Luca contacted Vincent before dawn.

“Family reunion?”

Vincent recorded the call.

“You killed Daniel?”

“No. Camilla did that without permission.”

Sophia listened.

“Then why keep hunting us?”

“Because Daniel stole something of mine.”

“The ledger?”

“No.”

Luca laughed.

“A key.”

Sophia remembered Daniel’s brass key.

But that had opened the bank box.

Unless it opened something else.

They examined it again.

A magnetic strip was embedded along one edge.

Vincent recognized the manufacturer.

Private vault technology.

The bank key had been disguised.

Its second function led them to an old Castellano hotel.

Room 814.

Inside, they found nothing.

Until Mia, brought under heavy protection because Sophia refused to leave her again, pointed at a wall.

“Crooked.”

A painting hung slightly unevenly.

Behind it was a safe.

The magnetic strip opened it.

Inside were deeds, account records and a second recorder.

Daniel’s final message.

Vincent pressed play.

“Luca Castellano is alive.”

Vincent shut his eyes.

Daniel continued.

“He's the one Anthony used when something needed to disappear. After Anthony died, Luca kept everything.”

Documents proved Luca owned hidden stakes in Vincent’s legitimate businesses.

Enough to sabotage them.

Enough to finance Camilla.

Enough to control Adrian.

Daniel had uncovered all of it.

Sophia finally understood.

Her husband had not died because of one construction scandal.

He had stumbled into the financial skeleton of the Castellano empire.

Daniel’s voice softened.

“Vinny, if you're hearing this, you're probably blaming yourself.”

Vincent looked away.

“Stop.”

Sophia’s throat tightened.

“You gave me a chance to walk away. I chose not to. If something happens, protect my girls—but don't turn them into prisoners. Sophia needs truth more than she needs guards.”

Vincent glanced at her.

Daniel seemed to be speaking across death directly into the room.

“And Mia needs to know her father wasn't brave because he wasn't afraid. I was terrified.”

A shaky laugh.

“I just loved them more.”

Sophia cried.

Daniel’s final words were:

“Be the man I know you can be.”

Recording ended.

Vincent sat silently.

Mia climbed onto the chair beside him.

“Daddy?”

Sophia nodded.

“That was Daddy.”

Mia touched the recorder.

“Daddy knew Vinny?”

“Yes.”

“Were they friends?”

Vincent answered.

“The best.”

Mia thought.

“Then you can be my friend too.”

Vincent couldn't speak.

Sophia had never seen him cry.

He didn't now.

But his eyes came close.

Then Marco entered.

“We found Luca.”

“Where?”

“He wants a meeting.”

Vincent stood.

“Terms?”

“Just you.”

Sophia shook her head.

“No.”

Marco handed Vincent an envelope Luca’s courier had delivered.

Inside was an old photograph.

Anthony.

Luca.

A teenage Vincent.

On the back Luca had written:

COME HOME.

Vincent stared at the message.

Sophia asked, “Where is home?”

Vincent looked toward the distant mountains.

“The first house my father ever owned.”

Marco’s phone rang.

He answered.

His face tightened.

“Vincent.”

“What?”

“Adrian Voss just surrendered to federal agents.”

“That’s good.”

“No.”

Marco turned the phone toward them.

Adrian had given agents a statement.

He claimed Luca was not working alone.

There was still one person inside Vincent’s organization.

Someone with access to everything.

Vincent read the statement.

Only one identifying detail had been released.

The traitor had been present when Daniel made his last phone call.

Vincent slowly looked around the room.

May you like

Then the study door opened.

And Rosa walked in holding Daniel’s missing phone.
