Chapter 10 - The Empire Vincent Burned

Rosa was not the traitor.

Daniel had given her the phone two years earlier.

He had made her swear to hide it unless Vincent discovered Luca.

Rosa had kept that promise.

The phone contained a scheduled encrypted message.

Vincent unlocked it using a date Daniel frequently used as a password.

Mia’s birthday.

The message identified the insider.

Vincent’s corporate attorney, Nathan Cole.

Nathan had altered ownership documents, moved Luca’s money and warned Camilla whenever Vincent came close.

Nathan was arrested before sunrise.

For the first time, the conspiracy began collapsing faster than it could rebuild.

Vincent made a decision.

He would dismantle every company, account and relationship inherited from his father that could not survive public scrutiny.

Marco stared.

“You could lose half of everything.”

“Then I lose half.”

“Vincent—”

“Daniel died uncovering this. I'm not preserving it.”

Sophia watched him sign documents that surrendered control worth hundreds of millions.

For years people assumed Vincent Castellano’s empire mattered more to him than anything.

He burned its rotten half voluntarily.

Federal prosecutors accepted his cooperation.

He provided evidence against Luca’s network.

He admitted his own Harbor Point cover-up.

Sophia heard him tell his lawyers he would accept the consequences.

“You could go to prison,” she said afterward.

“Yes.”

“Does that scare you?”

“Yes.”

The honesty surprised her.

“But running would make Daniel’s sacrifice meaningless.”

Sophia touched his hand.

“You've changed.”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“I think Daniel just made it impossible to keep lying to myself.”

Luca’s meeting remained.

Federal agents wanted Vincent wired.

Vincent agreed.

Sophia did not accompany him this time.

Not because he ordered her.

Because she chose Mia.

That distinction mattered.

Vincent went to the abandoned Castellano family house.

Luca waited in the dining room.

“You look like Anthony,” Luca said.

“I've spent my life trying not to.”

“You failed.”

“Maybe.”

Vincent sat.

“But I'm still trying.”

Luca offered him everything.

Accounts.

Companies.

Influence.

All Vincent had to do was destroy Daniel’s evidence.

Vincent refused.

Luca laughed.

“For a dead construction worker?”

“For my friend.”

“For his widow?”

Vincent’s silence answered too much.

Luca noticed.

“Ah.”

Vincent’s eyes hardened.

“Leave her out of this.”

“You love her.”

Vincent said nothing.

Luca smiled.

“That makes this easier.”

Vincent heard movement upstairs.

Agents were supposed to have cleared the house.

He stood.

Luca pulled a gun.

“Sit.”

Then a child cried upstairs.

Vincent’s blood turned cold.

Mia.

Impossible.

Sophia was at the safe house.

Luca smiled.

“Sit.”

Vincent obeyed.

Meanwhile Sophia discovered Mia’s bed empty.

A guard unconscious.

A window open.

Again.

But this time there was no panic.

Sophia had sewn a tracker into Mia’s stuffed fox.

She showed Marco.

“Family house.”

They moved.

Inside, Vincent heard Mia crying.

Luca demanded the federal evidence locations.

Vincent refused.

Luca aimed upstairs.

Vincent attacked.

The gun fired.

Sophia entered as Vincent and Luca crashed through the dining table.

Federal agents stormed the house.

Marco ran upstairs.

Sophia grabbed the gun.

Luca reached for another weapon.

She aimed at him.

For one terrible second, she wanted to fire.

This man had built the machinery that killed Daniel.

But Daniel’s words returned.

Finish this legally.

Sophia lowered the weapon just enough.

Agents tackled Luca.

Marco brought Mia downstairs.

Sophia ran to her.

Vincent sat against the wall, bleeding from his shoulder.

Mia saw him.

“Vinny!”

She escaped Marco and ran.

Vincent caught her with his good arm.

Sophia knelt beside them.

“You're hurt.”

“Barely.”

“You're bleeding.”

“Technically.”

She laughed and cried simultaneously.

Vincent looked at her.

Something passed between them.

Something neither was ready to name.

Then Luca began laughing while agents dragged him away.

“You still don't understand!”

Vincent turned.

Luca smiled at Sophia.

“Daniel wasn't killed because of the ledger.”

Sophia froze.

May you like

Luca’s smile widened.

“He was killed because of what he discovered about Mia.”
