Chapter 3 - The Man Outside the Gates

Vincent spun and caught the descending door.
Marco forced it upward from the corridor.
“Shooter escaped through the service exit.”
Sophia held the phone.
“You knew.”
Vincent saw the message.
“I know who I suspect.”
“That isn't what it says.”
“Messages from people trying to kill us aren't evidence.”
“You've been lying since I entered your study.”
“I've been withholding information.”
“That is the rich-man version of lying.”
They returned to the estate under heavier security.
Sophia refused to surrender key 814.
The following morning Vincent accompanied her to Union Federal.
Mr. Bell had retired.
But box 814 remained registered to Daniel Reyes.
Sophia’s key opened it.
Inside lay a flash drive, a sealed envelope and a child's pink hospital bracelet.
Sophia recognized the bracelet.
Mia Reyes.
Daniel had kept it.
Her eyes filled.
Vincent touched nothing.
Sophia opened the envelope.
Daniel’s handwriting covered six pages.
The first page began:
Sophia, I need you to know Vincent didn't cause this.
She looked at him.
He said nothing.
Daniel explained the scheme.
Elias Voss and Adrian had used construction projects to launder money and steal millions. Worse, they had bribed inspectors to approve unsafe materials.
Daniel discovered it.
Vincent secretly helped him gather proof.
Then Daniel learned there was another participant.
Someone inside law enforcement.
The final page contained only initials.
R.M.
“Who is R.M.?” Sophia asked.
Vincent’s expression darkened.
“Raymond Mercer.”
“Who is that?”
“The police commissioner.”
Sophia stared.
The same department had investigated Daniel’s death.
The same department had declared it accidental.
Vincent plugged the flash drive into an offline laptop.
Folders appeared.
Invoices.
Photographs.
Inspection records.
Then one video.
Daniel appeared on-screen.
“If Sophia is watching this, I didn't make it.”
She pressed a hand to her mouth.
Daniel leaned toward the camera.
“Baby, I'm sorry.”
Sophia’s tears fell.
“I wanted to tell you. I kept thinking one more day. One more piece of evidence. Then we'd be safe.”
He looked exhausted.
“Vincent is helping me. Don't blame him. He tried to make me walk away.”
Vincent lowered his eyes.
Daniel continued.
“But there’s something Vincent doesn't know. Adrian Voss isn't working for his father anymore.”
Vincent looked up.
“He's working for someone else.”
The recording glitched.
Daniel leaned closer.
“The person behind everything is—”
The video cut.
Sophia stared at the frozen screen.
“No.”
Vincent replayed it.
Same ending.
Someone had corrupted the final seconds.
Then an alarm sounded inside the bank.
Marco entered.
“We need to leave.”
“What happened?”
“Police.”
Sophia almost laughed.
“We're in a bank. Police aren't unusual.”
“They're coming for you.”
“For me?”
Marco showed her his phone.
An arrest warrant.
Sophia Reyes.
Charges: theft of confidential corporate documents.
Vincent’s face went cold.
“Mercer.”
Within seconds, police surrounded the bank.
Vincent looked at Sophia.
“You have a choice.”
“What choice?”
“Walk outside and trust the system that buried Daniel.”
“Or?”
“Come with me.”
“Where?”
“Somewhere Mercer can't reach.”
Sophia thought of Mia.
“I’m coming.”
They exited through an underground service corridor.
Vincent’s people moved them through neighboring buildings.
When they reached the estate an hour later, Mia ran toward Sophia.
“Mama!”
Sophia grabbed her.
Then Mia looked past her.
Her smile vanished.
“The funny-finger man.”
Sophia turned.
Beyond the iron gates stood an elderly man.
Gray hair.
Dark coat.
Bent index finger.
Elias Voss.
Security surrounded him.
Yet Elias raised both hands peacefully.
“I came to talk.”
Vincent approached the gate.
“You have thirty seconds.”
Elias smiled.
“You still sound like your father.”
“Twenty-nine.”
“I didn't kill Daniel Reyes.”
“Twenty-eight.”
“Neither did Adrian.”
Vincent stopped counting.
Elias looked directly at Sophia.
“Your husband discovered who did.”
Sophia stepped forward.
“Who?”
Elias reached into his coat.
Six weapons aimed at him.
Slowly, he removed a photograph.
He slid it beneath the gate.
Sophia picked it up.
Daniel stood outside a restaurant.
Beside him was Commissioner Mercer.
And a third man.
Vincent looked at the photograph.
His expression changed.
Sophia whispered, “Who is he?”
Vincent didn't answer.
Elias did.
“The man Daniel trusted with the evidence.”
Sophia turned the photograph over.
A date was written on the back.
The night before Daniel died.
Below it was a name.
Sophia read it once.
Then again.
Because the third man was someone who had been inside Vincent’s estate every day since she arrived.
May you like
MARCO BELLINI.
Behind Sophia, a gun clicked.
