Chapter 11 - Daniel’s Final Message

Sophia demanded answers.
Luca refused.
But the evidence eventually provided them.
Daniel had discovered a trust created by Anthony Castellano.
It contained shares transferred illegally through shell companies.
Daniel planned to expose it.
During his investigation, he temporarily registered the recovered shares under the safest identity he could imagine.
Mia.
Not because she was secretly a Castellano.
Not because Daniel had hidden some melodramatic bloodline.
Simply because a baby with no financial history was difficult for Luca’s automated monitoring systems to detect.
Mia had unknowingly held the key to evidence worth millions.
That was why everyone wanted her registry information.
Federal authorities seized the assets.
Sophia wanted none of the money.
“It isn't ours.”
Vincent agreed.
They established a compensation fund for workers harmed by the corrupt construction projects.
Daniel Reyes became the whistleblower whose evidence made restitution possible.
For Sophia, that mattered more than any fortune.
Vincent underwent surgery for his shoulder.
Mia visited wearing a toy doctor's coat.
“You need medicine.”
“I have medicine.”
“Mine is better.”
She gave him a gummy bear.
Vincent ate it solemnly.
Sophia laughed.
“Medical malpractice.”
Mia glared.
Vincent whispered, “Don't criticize the doctor.”
Weeks passed.
Mercer was indicted.
Camilla faced murder charges.
Luca faced racketeering, conspiracy and financial crimes.
Adrian cooperated.
Elias entered protective custody after testifying.
Nathan Cole pleaded guilty.
The network Daniel died exposing was finally visible.
Then came Vincent’s own hearing.
He admitted concealing the original Harbor Point safety failure.
The prosecutor acknowledged his later cooperation, restitution and evidence.
Vincent avoided prison but received substantial penalties and years of oversight.
He accepted all of it.
Outside the courthouse reporters crowded around him.
One shouted, “Mr. Castellano, was destroying your own organization worth it?”
Vincent stopped.
“I didn't destroy it.”
He looked toward Sophia.
“I removed what should never have existed.”
He walked away.
That evening Sophia entered his study.
The photograph of Daniel and Vincent no longer hid behind books.
It stood on the desk.
“You put it out.”
“It belongs there.”
Sophia touched the frame.
“I spent two years believing Daniel went to work and died because a piece of metal failed.”
Vincent stood beside her.
“I'm sorry.”
“I know.”
“I should have told you sooner.”
“Yes.”
He almost smiled.
She continued.
“But I understand why you didn't.”
Vincent looked at her.
“That's dangerously close to forgiveness.”
“Don't get excited.”
He smiled fully.
Sophia realized she had seen that smile before.
In the photograph.
Daniel had known this version of Vincent.
Maybe that was why Daniel trusted him.
Mia ran into the study.
“Vinny!”
“What?”
“You're doing eyebrows again.”
He immediately relaxed his face.
“Better?”
“No.”
She climbed onto his chair.
Sophia laughed.
For one quiet evening, nobody came through a gate.
Nobody fired a weapon.
Nobody called from a dead man's phone.
But later, while Sophia prepared Mia for bed, she discovered an envelope beneath the pillow.
Her name was written on it.
Daniel’s handwriting.
Her hands shook.
Inside was a letter she had never seen.
Soph, if Vincent finally gives you this, it means he kept his promise. There is one last thing I need you to know about the morning I died.
Sophia stopped reading.
