Chapter 14 - The Last Debt

The grave was exhumed under court order.

The body was Daniel.

Dental records confirmed it.

The ring was a duplicate.

The message had been Luca’s final attempt to destabilize Sophia before his capture.

Investigators traced the package to an associate.

For the first time, a threat designed to reopen old wounds failed.

Sophia felt anger.

Then relief.

Then something unexpected.

Closure.

“They wanted me to doubt everything again,” she told Vincent.

“Yes.”

“I won't.”

The final trials began.

Camilla was convicted after extensive documentary evidence and her warehouse confession corroborated the case.

Luca’s network collapsed through testimony and financial records.

Mercer died before trial concluded, but the public record documented his role.

Daniel’s death was officially reclassified from accidental to homicide.

Sophia received the amended certificate.

She stared at it for a long time.

A piece of paper could not restore Daniel.

But truth mattered.

His name mattered.

Vincent established the Daniel Reyes Foundation for construction safety and families of workers killed on job sites.

Sophia insisted it operate independently from him.

He agreed.

She became its financial director after completing her certification.

One afternoon she found Vincent in the living room.

Mia stood before him wearing a pink dress.

Arms crossed.

Cheeks puffed.

Vincent mirrored her.

They stared at each other.

Sophia covered her mouth.

“What's happening?”

“Negotiations,” Vincent said.

“About?”

“Bedtime.”

“No bedtime,” Mia declared.

“Eight-thirty.”

“Ten.”

“Eight-thirty.”

“Nine-fifty.”

Vincent glanced at Sophia.

“She's ruthless.”

“You trained her.”

“I absolutely did not.”

Mia narrowed her eyes.

Vincent narrowed his.

Sophia laughed.

The image struck her with unexpected force.

Three years earlier she had believed her future had ended beside Daniel’s grave.

Now she understood grief differently.

It was not a room she had to remain inside to prove she had loved him.

It was something she could carry while continuing forward.

Later Vincent took Sophia to the construction site where the photograph had been taken.

The project was complete now.

A public library stood there.

Inside the lobby hung a small plaque honoring workers who had contributed to the original project.

Daniel’s name was among them.

Vincent touched it.

“He saved my life here.”

“You never paid that debt.”

“No.”

Sophia looked at him.

“Good.”

He frowned.

“Good?”

“Friendship isn't a debt.”

Vincent absorbed that.

For a man raised to measure everything in loyalty and obligation, the idea seemed almost revolutionary.

Sophia took his hand.

“You don't owe Daniel your life.”

Vincent looked at her.

“You don't owe him mine either.”

She squeezed his hand.

“We get to choose.”

“Yes.”

Outside, Mia chased pigeons while Marco pretended not to watch her.

Sophia smiled.

Vincent reached into his coat.

She immediately noticed.

“What are you doing?”

He froze.

“Nothing.”

“Vincent.”

For perhaps the first time in his life, Vincent Castellano looked nervous.

He withdrew a small box.

Sophia stared.

“Oh.”

“I had a speech.”

“Had?”

“I've forgotten it.”

She laughed.

“That's unfortunate.”

“I've negotiated acquisitions worth hundreds of millions.”

“I'm sure.”

“I once talked three armed men into surrendering.”

“Congratulations.”

“This is worse.”

Sophia’s eyes filled.

Vincent opened the box.

The ring was elegant and simple.

Not enormous.

Not ostentatious.

He knew her.

“I don't want to rescue you,” he said. “You never needed that.”

Sophia swallowed.

“I don't want to erase Daniel. I couldn't, and I wouldn't.”

Her tears fell.

“I just want whatever life you're willing to build with me.”

Sophia looked toward Mia.

The little girl had stopped chasing pigeons.

She was staring.

Vincent noticed.

Apparently their private proposal now had an audience.

He lowered himself onto one knee anyway.

“Sophia Reyes, will you marry me?”

Sophia opened her mouth.

A phone rang.

Vincent’s.

Neither moved.

It rang again.

Marco looked at his own phone.

His expression changed.

“Vincent.”

Vincent stood.

“What?”

Marco slowly approached.

“The prison transport carrying Luca was attacked.”

Sophia’s happiness vanished.

“Is he alive?”

Marco looked at her.

“We don't know.”

“Did he escape?”

Marco swallowed.

“The vehicle is empty.”

Then Sophia’s phone vibrated.

One message.

One photograph.

It showed the front gates of Vincent’s estate.

Taken less than a minute earlier.

Beneath it were four words.

ONE LAST FAMILY MEETING.
