Chapter 6 - The Father Who Wasn't Dead

Adrian said nothing.

Neither did anyone around him.

Charles Vale's voice came through the phone again.

"You always did need time to understand the obvious."

Adrian's grip tightened.

"I watched them bury you."

"A closed casket."

Adrian remembered.

Officially, his father had died after a private plane crashed in the Atlantic.

Only fragments had been recovered.

The family had buried an empty coffin.

"You faked your death."

"I retired."

"You murdered Elena."

A pause.

"No."

"Daniel says someone did."

"I know who killed your sister."

Adrian looked toward Daniel.

"Who?"

Charles laughed softly.

"You've spent the entire evening standing beside him."

Everyone looked at Lucas.

Lucas's face went white.

"No."

Charles continued.

"Ask Lucas what happened on Route 17."

Adrian's gun slowly turned.

Lucas raised both hands.

"Adrian, don't."

"Tell me."

"Not like this."

"Tell me."

Lucas swallowed.

"I was driving."

Silence.

Emma stared at him.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Adrian could barely hear the smoke alarms anymore.

"You were in the car?"

"Yes."

"Why wasn't that in the police report?"

"Because your father erased it."

Adrian stepped forward.

"What happened?"

Lucas's eyes filled with something Adrian had never seen there.

Shame.

"Elena called me that night. She said someone was following her. I met her outside Stamford."

"Then?"

"I drove."

"Then?"

"A truck hit us."

Adrian stopped.

"She wasn't driving."

"No."

"But the report said—"

"Your father changed it."

"Why?"

"To hide the fact that she wasn't alone."

"Why would that matter?"

Lucas looked toward Daniel.

Daniel answered.

"Because Lucas survived."

The truth emerged slowly.

The truck had forced their car through a barrier.

Elena died on impact.

Lucas survived with broken ribs and internal bleeding.

Charles's people reached the crash before police.

They removed Lucas.

Altered the scene.

Placed Elena in the driver's seat.

Then hid Lucas in a private clinic.

"Why?" Adrian asked.

Lucas answered.

"Because Charles thought the attackers would come back if they knew I lived."

Adrian looked at the phone.

"You protected Lucas?"

Charles chuckled.

"For practical reasons."

"Who ordered the truck?"

"Gregory."

Everyone looked toward the wounded man.

Gregory laughed.

"That's what he told you?"

Charles's voice became colder.

"Gregory worked for me."

Gregory said, "I worked with you."

"Semantics."

Adrian looked at Gregory.

"You killed Elena?"

Gregory shook his head.

"I authorized surveillance. Not the collision."

Charles said, "Liar."

Gregory laughed again.

"Ask your father why Elena was followed in the first place."

Adrian's patience snapped.

"Enough."

Everyone went silent.

He raised the phone.

"Where are you?"

Charles answered immediately.

"Where Elena wanted you to look."

Adrian understood.

Hope Harbor.

The foundation headquarters occupied a restored building downtown.

Empty tonight because the entire leadership team was at the gala.

Charles continued.

"Bring Daniel. Bring Lucas. Bring the archive."

"And Emma?"

"No."

Emma glared at the phone.

"Good. I wasn't planning to come."

Adrian almost smiled.

Charles said, "Midnight, Adrian."

The call ended.

10:58 p.m.

One hour.

Marcus took Gregory into custody.

Adrian ordered the remaining guests evacuated and transferred control of Vale House to law enforcement.

The scandal would be impossible to contain.

Good.

Adrian no longer wanted it contained.

Emma confronted Daniel while they prepared to leave.

"You built the system."

Daniel nodded.

"I was young."

"That's your excuse?"

"No."

"How much money did you make?"

"Enough to hate myself."

"You let Mom believe you were dead."

"Because staying near you would've put you in danger."

"You keep saying that like danger didn't find us anyway."

Daniel had no answer.

Emma walked away.

Adrian approached him.

"If Charles is alive, why contact us now?"

"Because the ledger can expose him."

"He could have destroyed it years ago."

"No."

Daniel shook his head.

"Elena designed the encryption so that deleting the ledger triggers copies to external repositories."

Lucas joined them.

"Dead-man replication."

Daniel nodded.

"If Charles destroys the file, everything gets released."

Adrian understood.

"So he's been trying to gain control without triggering it."

"For years."

"Tonight's transaction?"

"Would have transferred legal ownership of the foundation archive to another entity. Once transferred, he could dismantle it."

Adrian looked toward Emma.

"And she?"

"Elena coded one authorization route to Daniel's family line."

Emma stared.

"My DNA?"

Daniel nodded.

"You were insurance."

Her anger deepened.

"You made me part of this before I could even understand it."

"No."

"Elena did."

That distinction did not help.

At 11:22 p.m., they reached Hope Harbor headquarters.

Adrian, Lucas, Daniel, and Emma entered together.

Marcus remained outside with federal agents.

Adrian had quietly sent copies of Gregory's evidence to three independent prosecutors before leaving Vale House.

If they vanished tonight, the investigation would continue.

The lobby was empty.

A single light illuminated Elena's portrait.

Below it sat a laptop.

The screen displayed a countdown.

00:37:41.

Emma whispered, "What's that?"

Daniel approached.

"Archive transfer."

A message appeared.

WELCOME, ADRIAN.

Then:

ONLY ONE OF YOU CAN STOP IT.

Four biometric stations illuminated.

Names appeared.

ADRIAN VALE.

LUCAS MERCER.

DANIEL BROOKS.

EMMA BROOKS.

Lucas cursed.

"This is a test."

Adrian looked around.

"No. It's theater."

A door opened above them.

Charles Vale stepped onto the mezzanine.

Alive.

Older.

Thinner.

But unmistakable.

Adrian had spent six years trying to become the opposite of this man.

Now he stood twenty feet away.

Charles smiled.

"My son."

Adrian raised his gun.

Emma raised hers.

Daniel did too.

Charles didn't react.

"You can shoot me."

Adrian said, "Tempting."

"But then the countdown continues."

"What happens at zero?"

"The archive changes ownership."

"To whom?"

Charles smiled.

"You."

Adrian frowned.

Charles explained.

If the countdown completed, every asset, shell company, and criminal liability connected to the old network would be legally consolidated beneath Adrian's corporate identity.

He wouldn't simply look guilty.

On paper, he would become the architect of crimes committed before he was even an adult.

"Why?"

Adrian asked.

"Because a dynasty needs continuity."

"I'm not continuing anything."

"That's what Elena said."

The name cut through Adrian.

Charles descended the stairs.

"Your sister was brilliant. But sentimental."

"She was better than you."

"She was weak."

Adrian struck him.

Charles hit the marble floor.

Lucas moved but stopped himself.

Charles wiped blood from his lip.

Then smiled.

"There he is."

Adrian stepped back.

"No."

Charles stood slowly.

"You think charity cleans the blood from our name?"

"Maybe not."

Adrian looked toward Elena's portrait.

"But truth might."

Charles's expression changed.

Adrian nodded toward Emma.

She inserted the hard drive from room 417 into the laptop.

Daniel connected his flash drive.

Lucas entered Elena's old encryption key.

The system responded.

THREE COMPONENTS VERIFIED.

FINAL AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

Adrian stepped toward the biometric station.

Charles laughed.

"If you authorize it, everything becomes public."

"Good."

"You'll destroy Vale Industries."

"Then it deserves to be destroyed."

"Thousands of employees."

"We'll separate legitimate companies from criminal assets."

"You can't."

"We'll find out."

Charles stepped closer.

"You'll lose your fortune."

Adrian looked at him.

"That may be the first thing you've said tonight that doesn't frighten me."

Emma almost smiled.

Charles's face hardened.

"You always were disappointing."

Adrian placed his hand on the biometric scanner.

The screen turned green.

ARCHIVE RELEASE INITIATED.

Charles lunged.

Lucas stopped him.

The two crashed against the desk.

Daniel grabbed Charles.

Emma backed away from the struggle.

Adrian watched the upload bar.

12%.

28%.

41%.

Charles shouted, "Stop it!"

Adrian did not move.

63%.

A gunshot exploded.

Everyone froze.

Daniel staggered.

Blood appeared along his side.

Charles held a small pistol hidden beneath his jacket.

Emma screamed.

"Dad!"

Charles aimed at Adrian.

Lucas attacked him.

The pistol fired again.

The bullet shattered the laptop screen.

Everything went dark.

Emma dropped beside Daniel.

Adrian wrestled Charles to the floor.

Lucas kicked the pistol away.

Federal agents stormed the lobby.

Marcus shouted commands.

Charles was handcuffed.

Daniel remained conscious.

Emma pressed both hands against his wound.

"Stay with me."

He managed a weak smile.

"Bossy."

"Don't."

Her voice broke.

"Don't you dare."

Adrian looked toward the ruined laptop.

The upload had stopped.

Nobody knew at what percentage.

Lucas found a secondary monitor.

Black.

Then a line appeared.

ARCHIVE RELEASE FAILED.

Charles began laughing from the floor.

Adrian stared at the screen.

Then another line appeared.

MANUAL RECOVERY REQUIRED.

LOCATION: ELENA VALE PRIVATE ARCHIVE.

Lucas whispered, "Her apartment."

Daniel opened his eyes.

"No."

Adrian turned.

Daniel's face had gone pale.

"Not the apartment."

"Then where?"

Daniel struggled to speak.

"Elena had another place."

Charles stopped laughing.

That reaction told Adrian everything.

Daniel whispered an address.

Adrian recognized it immediately.

It was the abandoned childhood house where Elena and Adrian had grown up.

The house Charles had ordered demolished ten years ago.

Except Daniel said:

"It was never demolished."

Adrian's phone vibrated.

A new message arrived from an unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

The old Vale house.

Lights glowing inside.

And a woman standing behind an upstairs window.

May you like

Adrian dropped the phone.

Because the woman in the photograph looked exactly like Elena.
