Chapter 3 - The Voice Beneath the House

Adrian could hear Emma breathing.

Lucas said nothing.

The darkness remained absolute.

Then the voice came again.

"Adrian."

Not from the room.

From the hard drive.

A tiny light blinked on its side.

Adrian found the switch on the desk lamp.

Nothing.

Power had been cut.

He pulled out the emergency phone and activated its flashlight.

Emma stood beside the archive box.

Lucas had backed against the steel door.

"Nobody moves," Adrian said.

Emma pointed the pistol toward Lucas.

"He knew."

"I knew there was a room," Lucas replied. "I didn't know what was inside."

"Then why does Elena's letter mention you?"

Lucas looked at Adrian.

"Because she asked me to protect you."

"From what?"

"Your father."

Silence.

Adrian's face hardened.

"My father was alive for six years after Elena died."

"Exactly."

Emma stared between them.

"You knew his sister was investigating him."

Lucas's jaw tightened.

"I knew Elena believed Charles was involved in illegal transfers. I didn't know Daniel Brooks was helping her until tonight."

Emma stepped closer.

"My father died because of this."

"Maybe."

"Maybe?"

"We need facts."

"My father was found dead after meeting his sister."

"And Elena died five years later."

Adrian interrupted.

"Enough."

The hard drive light blinked again.

A tiny speaker crackled.

Elena's recorded voice filled the room.

"If Adrian is hearing this, then something went wrong."

Adrian froze.

He had not heard her voice in twelve years.

Memory attacked without warning.

Elena laughing on the back steps of their childhood home.

Elena teaching him to drive.

Elena standing between him and Charles after a brutal argument.

Then a highway barrier.

Twisted metal.

A funeral.

A closed coffin.

The recording continued.

"Adrian, you were never supposed to inherit Father's empire without knowing what it was built on."

Emma lowered the gun slightly.

Lucas closed his eyes.

Elena's voice continued.

"Daniel Brooks found the first accounts. I found the second. Neither of us understood how large the network had become."

Adrian looked toward Emma.

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Daniel believed someone inside the company was moving money for criminal organizations through charitable foundations, shipping contracts, and political donations."

Adrian's stomach tightened.

Hope Harbor.

His charity.

Tonight's gala.

"Father discovered our investigation."

The recording paused.

Then:

"Daniel died three days later."

Emma made a broken sound.

Adrian looked at her but did not interrupt.

"I kept investigating. I made copies. I trusted one person besides Daniel."

Lucas stared at the floor.

"Lucas Mercer."

Emma lifted the gun again.

The recording continued.

"Lucas begged me to stop. He believed Father would kill anyone who threatened the network."

Adrian looked at Lucas.

"Did you?"

Lucas nodded.

"Yes."

Elena's voice continued.

"I told Lucas that if anything happened to me, he had to keep Adrian away from this until Charles was gone."

Adrian's anger turned cold.

"You kept this from me."

Lucas replied quietly, "I kept you alive."

Elena's recording continued.

"But if Adrian is hearing this while Charles is already dead, then the network survived him."

Adrian felt the statement settle over the room.

Someone else had inherited it.

Someone still inside his organization.

"The names are in the ledger," Elena said. "But the ledger isn't here."

Emma whispered, "Where is it?"

As though answering her, Elena continued.

"I separated the evidence. Daniel hid one piece. I hid another. No single person could expose the network alone."

The recording distorted.

Then stabilized.

"The ledger is connected to Hope Harbor."

Adrian looked at the hard drive.

His charity had been founded after Elena's death.

In her name.

At least, that was what his father had told him.

"That's impossible," Adrian whispered.

Lucas said, "Charles created the legal structure before the public launch."

Elena continued.

"Adrian, if you ever hear this, do not trust the foundation's board."

Adrian mentally pictured them.

Judges.

CEOs.

A former governor.

Gregory Shaw.

Lucas.

And himself.

"The final file is hidden where Father believed nobody would ever look."

The recording ended.

Emma stared at the speaker.

"That's it?"

Adrian picked up the drive.

"No."

A folder was visible on the small built-in screen.

Three files.

One recording.

One financial summary.

One photograph.

Adrian opened the photograph.

Seven people stood around a table.

His father was one.

Daniel Brooks was another.

Elena stood near the back.

Gregory Shaw stood beside Charles.

And Lucas was there too.

Emma immediately saw him.

"You said you didn't know my father."

Lucas looked at the photograph.

His face changed.

"I didn't."

"You're standing three feet away from him."

"That photograph is from a foundation planning meeting. There were fifty people in the room that day."

Adrian enlarged the image.

A date appeared in the corner.

April 7, 2012.

The day before Daniel Brooks died.

Emma's gun pointed directly at Lucas's chest.

"You were there the day before my father was murdered."

Lucas raised his hands.

"So was Elena."

Emma moved toward him.

Adrian stepped between them.

"Not now."

"He lied."

"Yes."

Lucas looked wounded by that.

Adrian didn't care.

"We survive first. Then everyone explains everything."

A pounding sounded against the steel door.

All three turned.

"Vale!" a man shouted from outside.

Emma whispered, "They found us."

Adrian looked around the archive room.

No second exit.

Of course his father would build a secret archive with only one door.

Lucas reached beneath his jacket.

Emma immediately aimed at him.

Lucas slowly removed a small ceramic blade.

"Relax."

"You brought a knife to a gunfight?"

"I was attending a gala."

Adrian checked the old shelves.

Stone walls.

Ventilation duct.

Too narrow.

Another impact hit the door.

"Open it!"

Adrian grabbed the archive case.

"What are you doing?"

"Giving them what they came for."

Emma stared at him.

"Are you insane?"

"Possibly."

He removed the hard drive and slipped it into Emma's apron pocket.

Then placed the empty case on the floor.

"Lucas, when the door opens, lights."

Lucas understood.

The emergency phone had a high-intensity flash.

Emma didn't.

"What?"

Adrian looked at her.

"When I say down, get down."

The lock began to turn from outside.

Someone had a master key.

The steel door opened.

Adrian shouted, "Now."

Lucas triggered the phone flash.

White light exploded through the darkness.

Men cursed.

Emma dropped.

Adrian drove the empty archive case into the first attacker's face.

Lucas slashed the second man's weapon hand.

A gun fired into the ceiling.

Adrian grabbed the first man's wrist, twisted, and drove him into the stone wall.

Emma crawled toward the dropped weapon.

Another man entered.

She aimed.

"Stop!"

He ignored her.

She fired once.

The bullet hit the wall beside his head.

The man froze.

Emma's hands shook violently.

"Next one doesn't miss."

Adrian almost smiled.

She was learning.

Within seconds, two attackers were down.

One escaped up the corridor.

Adrian took a pistol.

Lucas grabbed another.

"Now they'll know exactly where we are."

"They already did."

Emma searched the unconscious man.

She pulled out an access card.

Gregory Shaw's name was printed across it.

Adrian looked toward Lucas.

"Still think someone is using your name?"

Lucas's expression remained troubled.

"I think Gregory wants us to think the answer is simple."

They moved back toward the service elevator.

Adrian checked the time.

10:08 p.m.

Less than two hours.

The ballroom guests were effectively hostages now.

Whatever Gregory wanted, he believed it would be accomplished before midnight.

Adrian's emergency phone vibrated.

Another message.

This time from Gregory himself.

BRING THE KEY TO THE BALLROOM.

Emma said, "He doesn't know we opened the box."

"Good."

A second message appeared.

AND BRING LUCAS.

Lucas stared at it.

"That's new."

Adrian typed a reply.

WHY?

The response came immediately.

BECAUSE HE KNOWS WHERE ELENA HID THE LEDGER.

Adrian turned toward Lucas.

Emma did too.

Lucas looked genuinely stunned.

"I don't."

The phone vibrated again.

A photograph arrived.

It showed Lucas inside Vale House.

Taken that afternoon.

He was standing in Adrian's private library.

Holding something.

A red leather book.

Adrian zoomed in.

"What is that?"

Lucas's face went blank.

Emma whispered, "The ledger."

"No."

Lucas took a step back.

"Adrian, listen to me."

"What were you doing in my library?"

"I came to check something."

"Without telling me?"

"I was trying to protect you."

"That excuse is getting old."

Lucas looked toward the corridor.

"We need to move."

Adrian blocked him.

"No."

Emma raised the gun.

Lucas looked between them.

Then surrendered.

"Fine."

He removed a key from his pocket.

Not brass.

Silver.

Adrian recognized it.

Private library archive cabinet.

"I found this in Elena's old apartment two weeks ago."

"Why were you in Elena's apartment?"

"Because someone had been there before me."

Adrian's anger faltered.

"Who?"

"I don't know."

"What did they take?"

Lucas reached into his inner pocket.

He removed a torn piece of red leather.

"The ledger was hidden inside the lining of her old desk."

Emma stared at it.

"So you found it."

"No."

Lucas shook his head.

"I found where it had been."

Adrian understood.

Someone else had reached it first.

"Gregory?"

"Maybe."

A distant alarm began ringing.

Not the fire alarm.

Estate security evacuation warning.

Adrian checked the emergency phone.

A message from the control system appeared.

BALLROOM LOCKDOWN OVERRIDE.

Then another.

LOWER LEVEL VAULT ACCESS REQUESTED.

Adrian stared at it.

The lower vault had nothing to do with money.

It contained estate records.

Family trusts.

Original incorporation documents.

And sealed files belonging to Charles Vale.

Adrian looked at Lucas.

"What would Gregory want from the vault?"

Lucas's face became tense.

"Not Gregory."

"Who?"

Lucas looked toward Emma.

"Daniel Brooks."

Emma recoiled.

"My father is dead."

Lucas shook his head slowly.

"Your father's body was never identified by DNA."

Emma stared at him.

"You're lying."

"I'm telling you what Elena discovered."

Adrian stepped closer.

"When?"

"Three weeks before she died."

Emma's voice became barely audible.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"I didn't know you existed."

Her eyes filled.

Adrian saw the truth before Lucas said it.

Daniel Brooks might not have died in 2012.

Someone wanted Emma at Vale House.

Someone sent her the key.

Someone led her to room 417.

Someone knew exactly how to pull Adrian, Lucas, and Emma into the same place.

The elevator indicator suddenly illuminated.

Someone was descending toward them.

B2.

B1.

G.

Then it stopped.

The doors began to open.

Emma lifted the gun.

A man stood inside.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Scar along his jaw.

Emma's weapon slipped from her hand.

May you like

She whispered one word.

"Dad?"
