Chapter 4 - The Dead Man in the Elevator

Daniel Brooks looked nothing like the man in Emma's childhood photographs.

Fourteen years had aged him brutally.

His hair had gone gray.

A scar ran from his left ear to his jaw.

His shoulders remained broad, but one leg dragged slightly as he stepped from the elevator.

Emma couldn't move.

"Dad?"

Daniel looked at her.

His face broke.

"Emma."

She crossed the distance between them and hit him.

Hard.

The sound cracked through the corridor.

Daniel didn't defend himself.

Emma hit him again.

"You were alive."

"Emma—"

"Fourteen years."

"I know."

"You let me bury you."

"I know."

"You let Mom die thinking you were dead."

Pain crossed his face.

"I know."

Emma shoved him.

"You don't get to say that."

Adrian stood back.

Lucas did too.

Some reunions did not deserve witnesses.

Eventually Emma's anger collapsed into something worse.

She pressed both hands over her face.

Daniel moved closer.

She backed away.

"Don't touch me."

He stopped.

Adrian finally spoke.

"Why are armed men inside my estate?"

Daniel looked at him.

"Because Gregory Shaw knows the ledger can destroy him."

"Is Gregory running the network?"

"Part of it."

"Who's above him?"

Daniel glanced toward the elevator.

"We don't have time."

Adrian raised the pistol.

"Make time."

Daniel looked almost amused.

"You really are Charles's son."

"Don't compare me to him."

"Then lower the weapon and listen."

Adrian did not lower it.

Daniel continued anyway.

"Your father created the network in the late nineties. Not for organized crime at first. It started as political leverage."

"Money laundering?"

"Bribery. Hidden donations. Offshore accounts. Compromising payments. Charles collected secrets."

Lucas said, "And then?"

"Then people realized secrets were worth more than money."

Daniel looked at Adrian.

"Governors. Judges. CEOs. Foreign officials. Your father built a machine that could make careers or end them."

Emma stared at him.

"And you found it."

"By accident."

"Why fake your death?"

"I didn't."

Daniel's face tightened.

"They tried to kill me."

He described the bridge.

A car forced him off the road.

The vehicle plunged through a barrier.

Daniel escaped through the passenger window before it sank.

A fisherman found him miles downstream.

By the time Daniel regained consciousness, the news reported his death.

"Why stay dead?" Emma demanded.

"Because someone came to the hospital looking for me."

"Who?"

"Charles Vale."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

Daniel continued.

"I realized being dead was the only thing keeping me alive."

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

"So you abandoned us."

"I watched you."

"That isn't the same as being there."

"No."

His voice broke.

"It isn't."

Adrian cut in.

"Elena."

Daniel looked at him.

"Your sister found me five years later."

"How?"

"She never believed the official story."

That sounded exactly like Elena.

"She tracked one of the offshore accounts to a company I was using."

"What happened?"

"We worked together."

"Until she died."

Daniel nodded.

Adrian's grip tightened around the pistol.

"Was her accident arranged?"

"Yes."

The answer hit harder than Adrian expected.

He had suspected it from the moment he heard Elena's recording.

Knowing was different.

"By my father?"

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

Adrian froze.

"Then who?"

Daniel looked directly at Lucas.

Emma raised the gun she had retrieved.

Lucas stepped back.

"Don't."

Daniel said, "I didn't say Lucas."

Adrian's stare remained fixed on him.

"Then why are you looking at him?"

"Because the person responsible used Lucas's credentials."

Lucas swore.

"Again."

"Exactly."

Daniel reached into his coat.

Adrian's pistol rose.

Daniel slowly removed a flash drive.

"Elena figured out someone had been impersonating senior people inside Vale companies for years."

"Who?"

"We never proved it."

"Gregory?"

"He was involved. But he wasn't the architect."

Emma asked, "Then who is?"

Daniel looked toward Adrian.

"Someone who understands your family."

The estate alarm intensified.

Daniel checked his watch.

"Gregory will begin phase two soon."

"What is phase two?" Adrian asked.

"The gala."

Daniel explained.

Hope Harbor's annual gala did more than raise money.

Tonight, several donors were signing a private redevelopment agreement worth almost six billion dollars.

The transaction involved city land, construction rights, and international funding.

Gregory intended to route part of the payment through dormant Vale accounts.

Adrian's electronic signature would validate everything.

"If he completes it," Daniel said, "you become the legal face of the transaction."

Adrian understood.

"And when investigators find it—"

"You go to prison."

Emma whispered, "And Gregory disappears."

"Not just Gregory."

Daniel looked grim.

"The entire surviving network."

Lucas asked, "Why take the guests hostage?"

"Leverage. Witnesses. Confusion. And one specific person in that ballroom has the authorization token Gregory needs."

"Who?"

Daniel hesitated.

"Senator Rebecca Cole."

Adrian knew her.

Chair of the federal infrastructure committee.

She had personally supported Hope Harbor.

"She won't cooperate."

"She doesn't know she's carrying the token."

Adrian frowned.

Daniel explained that Gregory had arranged for Rebecca to receive a ceremonial donor pin when she arrived.

Inside it was a secure authentication chip.

With the chip and Adrian's biometric approval, the transfer could be completed.

"I haven't approved anything."

"They don't need you willing."

Emma looked toward the armed men they'd left behind.

"They want him alive because they need his face or fingerprint."

Daniel nodded.

Adrian checked the time.

10:26.

"Then we remove Rebecca."

"Ballroom doors are controlled from security."

"Can you open them?"

"No."

"Can Lucas?"

Daniel glanced at him.

Lucas said, "Maybe from the east control terminal."

Adrian looked at Emma.

"You stay with your father."

"No."

"Emma."

"No."

She stepped toward him.

"I spent fourteen years believing my father was dead because of your family. Tonight I learned armed men are trying to use me, my father's evidence, and your charity. I'm not hiding in a basement."

Daniel looked almost proud.

Then sad.

"She's always been stubborn."

Emma glared.

"You don't get to know that."

Adrian divided the weapons.

Lucas and Daniel each took one.

Emma kept hers.

They climbed toward the main floor through the service stairs.

As they moved, Daniel explained the ledger.

Elena had compiled names, dates, shell companies, and recorded payments.

But she knew the network could destroy any single copy.

So she created three pieces.

Daniel held financial records.

Lucas unknowingly protected access credentials.

And Adrian's estate contained the original identity ledger.

"Where?"

Daniel looked at Adrian.

"Somewhere Charles could keep it in plain sight."

"The library?"

"No."

"Office?"

"No."

"Then where?"

Daniel said, "Elena left a clue."

He handed Adrian the flash drive.

A text file contained one sentence.

WHERE THEY APPLAUD THE MAN WHO NEVER DESERVED IT.

Adrian stared at the words.

The ballroom.

His father's portrait hung above the central staircase overlooking the ballroom.

Every gala guest passed beneath it.

"Behind the portrait."

Daniel nodded.

"Probably."

They reached the ballroom service entrance.

Through a narrow window, Adrian saw the guests.

No applause now.

Fear had replaced celebration.

Security impostors stood at every exit.

Gregory Shaw was onstage speaking calmly into a microphone.

"Technical malfunction," he told the crowd. "Please remain where you are."

Politicians were arguing.

Guests were filming.

Phones showed no signal.

Adrian searched for Senator Cole.

There.

Near the front.

Wearing a silver donor pin.

Lucas whispered, "How do we reach her?"

Adrian watched the room.

"You don't."

They looked at him.

"I do."

Emma shook her head.

"They're searching for you."

"Exactly."

Before anyone could stop him, Adrian straightened his jacket and walked through the service door.

The crowd noticed immediately.

A wave of relief spread.

"Mr. Vale!"

Gregory froze onstage.

Adrian smiled.

The kind of smile he had learned from his father.

Calm.

Controlled.

Terrifying.

"Apologies, everyone," Adrian said loudly. "Apparently my security team has decided tonight wasn't dramatic enough."

Nervous laughter.

Gregory recovered.

"Adrian, perhaps we should—"

"No."

Adrian walked toward the stage.

Every fake guard watched him.

Good.

All eyes off Emma and Lucas.

Adrian climbed the steps.

Gregory embraced him for appearances.

His mouth moved beside Adrian's ear.

"You should have stayed hidden."

Adrian smiled toward the crowd.

"You should have chosen better men."

Gregory's expression tightened.

"You don't know what's happening."

"That's what everyone keeps telling me."

Adrian turned toward Senator Cole.

"Rebecca, would you join us?"

Gregory's hand caught Adrian's wrist.

Too late.

Senator Cole approached.

Adrian removed her donor pin.

"Lovely design," he said.

Gregory whispered, "Give me that."

Adrian held it between two fingers.

Then dropped it into his champagne glass.

The electronics sparked.

Gregory's face changed.

Adrian leaned close.

"Transaction canceled."

The ballroom lights went out.

Screams erupted.

Adrian grabbed Rebecca and pulled her down behind the stage.

Gunfire cracked.

Guests dropped.

Emergency lights flashed red.

Emma appeared through the side entrance.

Lucas moved toward the security corridor.

Daniel vanished toward the staircase.

Adrian dragged Rebecca behind a marble column.

"Stay down."

"What is happening?"

"I'll explain later."

His emergency phone vibrated.

A message.

Not from Gregory.

A live photograph.

Daniel stood before Charles Vale's portrait.

Someone was behind him.

A gun pressed against his head.

The message contained six words.

THE LEDGER WAS NEVER BEHIND THE PORTRAIT.

Then another arrived.

ASK LUCAS WHERE HE PUT IT.

May you like

Adrian looked toward the east corridor.

Lucas was gone.
