Chapter 5 - The Brother Who Disappeared

Adrian left Senator Cole with two legitimate guards who had regained control near the west exit.

He moved through the darkness toward the east corridor.

Emma caught up.

"Where's Lucas?"

"Gone."

"My father?"

"Taken."

She stopped.

"What?"

Adrian showed her the photograph.

Emma's face hardened.

"We find him."

"We will."

"You said Lucas was your brother."

"He is."

"Then why did he disappear?"

"I don't know yet."

The ballroom remained chaotic behind them, but several real security officers had begun fighting back.

Adrian's head of security, Marcus Hale, appeared from the stairwell.

Blood marked his forehead.

"Sir."

Adrian aimed at him before recognizing him.

Marcus raised both hands.

"Good reflexes."

"Status."

"Six impostors confirmed. Two detained. One unconscious. Three unaccounted for."

"There were four."

"More entered after lockdown."

"Guests?"

"No confirmed deaths. Three injuries."

Adrian released a breath he hadn't realized he was holding.

"Get every guest out through the west garden."

"Doors are electronically sealed."

"Break the windows."

Marcus almost smiled.

"Already doing it."

"Find Senator Cole. Keep her protected."

"Yes, sir."

Adrian showed him Daniel's photograph.

"Find where this was taken."

Marcus studied it.

"North gallery."

Emma was already moving.

They reached the north gallery in less than two minutes.

Daniel was there.

Alive.

Tied to a chair.

No attacker.

Emma ran to him.

"Dad."

Daniel's forehead was bleeding.

"I'm fine."

Adrian cut the restraints.

"Who took you?"

"Masked."

"Lucas?"

"No."

"You sure?"

"Yes."

"Why leave you alive?"

Daniel looked toward the wall.

A section of Charles Vale's portrait had been cut away.

Behind it was an empty cavity.

"They wanted me to see that."

Emma said, "The ledger was supposed to be there."

Daniel shook his head.

"No. Elena wanted us to think it was."

Adrian stared.

"What?"

"That clue wasn't about the portrait."

WHERE THEY APPLAUD THE MAN WHO NEVER DESERVED IT.

Adrian looked back toward the ballroom.

Then understood.

"The stage."

Every year, Hope Harbor honored Adrian.

Every year, hundreds applauded him from that stage.

Daniel nodded.

"Under it."

Emma said, "Then Lucas went there."

Adrian's phone vibrated.

A message from Lucas.

DON'T COME AFTER ME.

Adrian stared.

Then typed:

WHERE ARE YOU?

No answer.

Another message appeared.

I'M FINISHING WHAT ELENA STARTED.

Adrian called.

No connection.

Daniel said, "He has the ledger."

"You don't know that."

"He knew Elena better than any of us."

Adrian turned.

"How well?"

Daniel hesitated.

Too long.

"Tell me."

"They were together."

Emma looked surprised.

Adrian wasn't.

He had suspected Elena and Lucas once.

Years ago.

Neither admitted it.

"How long?"

"Almost two years."

Adrian remembered Lucas at Elena's funeral.

Silent.

Standing in the rain long after everyone left.

It made sense now.

"She trusted him."

"More than anyone."

Adrian looked at the message again.

I'm finishing what Elena started.

Lucas wasn't running.

He was doing something alone.

Something dangerous.

Adrian walked toward the ballroom stage.

Below it was a mechanical service space used for lighting equipment.

He opened a narrow maintenance door.

Empty.

A red leather ledger lay on a crate.

Emma whispered, "That's it?"

Adrian did not touch it.

Too easy.

Daniel crouched.

"Wires."

A small pressure trigger sat beneath the book.

Emma stepped back.

"Bomb?"

Daniel examined it.

"Alarm trigger."

"For what?"

Adrian's phone vibrated.

Lucas again.

DON'T TOUCH THE BOOK.

Adrian typed:

WHERE ARE YOU?

This time, Lucas answered.

SECURITY CONTROL.

Adrian immediately moved.

Emma and Daniel followed.

The control room was on the third floor.

When they arrived, the door stood open.

Two attackers lay unconscious inside.

Lucas sat before the security console.

Blood covered his shirt.

Adrian raised the pistol.

Lucas looked back.

"Took you long enough."

"You could have told me."

"No."

"Why?"

"Because Gregory is tracking your emergency phone."

Adrian stared at the device.

Lucas pointed toward it.

"Turn it off."

Adrian did.

Emma said, "What about the ledger?"

"Fake."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Elena made decoys."

Lucas looked at him.

"Three."

"Where's the real one?"

Lucas turned back to the monitors.

"On its way out of the building."

Adrian stepped closer.

"With whom?"

"Senator Cole."

Emma frowned.

Lucas explained.

Years earlier, Elena had embedded the ledger inside a legal trust document filed with Hope Harbor's federal charter.

The data was encrypted.

Nobody realized the document contained anything unusual.

Tonight, Gregory needed Rebecca Cole's donor pin because it contained government authentication capable of unlocking the digital archive.

"The ledger wasn't physical," Adrian said.

"Not anymore."

Lucas nodded.

"When you destroyed the pin, Gregory lost his easy route."

"Then why is he still here?"

"Because there's another token."

Adrian knew instantly.

"Mine."

"Your biometric key."

Daniel said, "He can still force Adrian to authorize it."

Lucas pointed toward the monitors.

One feed showed Gregory moving through the lower level with two armed men.

Another showed guests escaping through shattered garden doors.

A third showed Marcus escorting Senator Cole.

Lucas smiled.

"Most civilians are out."

Adrian's shoulders relaxed slightly.

Then the screen changed.

Gregory entered Adrian's private office.

He opened a hidden wall compartment.

Adrian stared.

He didn't know that compartment existed.

Inside sat a black case.

Gregory removed it.

Lucas whispered, "What is that?"

Daniel went pale.

"No."

"What?"

Daniel leaned closer.

"Charles's master archive."

Adrian stared.

"You said the ledger was the final evidence."

"It is."

"Then what's that?"

"Insurance."

"Against whom?"

Daniel looked at him.

"Everyone."

Gregory opened the case.

Inside were dozens of drives.

Records.

Audio.

Video.

Blackmail collected across decades.

Enough to destroy politicians, businesses, families.

Maybe governments.

Emma whispered, "If he gets that out—"

"He owns everyone Charles ever controlled," Daniel said.

Adrian watched Gregory move toward the underground garage.

"Stop him."

Lucas typed furiously.

"Garage doors locked."

Gregory looked toward the security camera.

Smiled.

Then raised a small remote.

The monitor went black.

Lucas cursed.

"Independent detonator."

Adrian turned.

"For what?"

An explosion shook the estate.

Glass shattered.

The room lurched.

Emma screamed.

A second blast came from below.

Lucas checked emergency sensors.

"Garage breach."

Gregory had created an exit.

Adrian ran.

They reached the garage moments later.

Smoke filled the underground space.

A black SUV had smashed through the damaged outer door.

Gregory stood beside it.

One attacker aimed at Adrian.

Lucas fired first.

The man dropped.

Gregory climbed into the SUV.

Adrian shot the front tire.

The vehicle swerved.

Crashed into a stone pillar.

Gregory stumbled out with the black case.

Emma blocked the ramp.

Her pistol pointed at him.

"Drop it."

Gregory smiled.

"You must be Daniel's daughter."

Emma's finger tightened.

"Drop the case."

"Your father destroyed your life for this."

"My father isn't the one holding it."

Gregory glanced toward Daniel.

"Still pretending you're the victim?"

Daniel's face changed.

Adrian noticed.

"What does that mean?"

Gregory laughed.

"You haven't told them?"

Daniel said, "Don't."

Emma turned slightly.

"Told us what?"

Gregory lifted the case.

"Daniel didn't discover Charles Vale's network."

Silence.

"He helped build it."

Emma stared at her father.

Daniel looked away.

Gregory continued.

"Your father wasn't an innocent security officer. He designed the system Charles used to hide everything."

Emma's voice broke.

"Dad?"

Daniel whispered, "It's true."

Her weapon lowered.

Only inches.

Gregory moved.

Adrian fired.

The bullet struck Gregory's shoulder.

The black case fell.

Lucas kicked it away.

Marcus and two guards rushed in.

Gregory collapsed against the SUV.

Adrian approached.

"It's over."

Gregory smiled through the pain.

"No."

"You've lost the guests. The case. The transaction."

Gregory laughed.

"You still think I'm in charge."

Adrian stopped.

Gregory looked toward Daniel.

"Tell him."

Daniel's face was gray.

"Tell me what?"

Daniel stared at Adrian.

"Gregory was never the head of the network."

"Who was?"

A phone inside the black case began ringing.

Everyone froze.

Adrian opened the case.

One phone sat among the drives.

Its screen showed a private number.

He answered.

No one spoke at first.

Then an older male voice said:

"Adrian."

Every muscle in Daniel's body went rigid.

Lucas whispered, "You know that voice?"

Daniel looked terrified.

Adrian waited.

The caller continued.

"I've waited a very long time to see whether you'd become your father."

Adrian's blood turned cold.

Because he knew the voice too.

It belonged to a man whose funeral he had attended six years earlier.

May you like

His father.

Charles Vale.
