Chapter 9 - The Last Secret of the Duca Mansion

The abandoned Rossi property stood at the edge of the city, hidden behind overgrown trees and broken stone walls.
A place forgotten by everyone.
Or at least...
That was what Antonio Rossi wanted people to believe.
The old building had once been a warehouse.
A place where business deals were made behind closed doors.
A place where powerful men decided the futures of people who never knew their names.
Now, it was empty.
Cold.
Silent.
Except for the people inside.
Lorenzo Duca walked through the broken entrance with security behind him.
I was not supposed to be there.
He had told me to stay at the mansion.
To keep Emma safe.
To let him handle everything.
But after everything that happened...
I knew better than to believe that my place was somewhere quiet while my life was being destroyed.
So I went with him.
Not because I wanted revenge.
Because I needed answers.
The moment we entered the building, I felt it.
The same feeling I had inside the east corridor.
The feeling that someone had been controlling the story from the beginning.
Lorenzo stopped.
Ahead of us, under a single hanging light, stood Matteo.
The head of Duca security.
The man who had protected the mansion for twenty years.
The man who had carried Emma when she fell asleep at dinner.
The man I believed was good.
Beside him stood Vivienne Rossi.
She looked different.
Not because she was less beautiful.
She was still elegant.
Still perfectly dressed.
But the perfection was gone.
Her hair was messy.
Her face was tired.
The mask had finally started to break.
“Lorenzo.”
Her voice was calm.
Almost welcoming.
He stared at her.
“I should have known.”
Vivienne tilted her head.
“Known what?”
“That you were never afraid of losing me.”
A small smile appeared on her face.
“You finally understand.”
The words hurt more than anger would have.
Because she admitted it.
She never loved him.
Not even for a moment.
I stood beside Lorenzo.
Watching the woman who had almost killed me.
The woman who had made my daughter afraid.
The woman who had destroyed the peace inside the mansion.
And somehow...
She looked almost relieved.
Like she was tired of pretending.
“Why?” Lorenzo asked.
One word.
But it carried twenty years of pain.
“Why did you come into my life?”
Vivienne looked away.
For the first time, she looked human.
Not dangerous.
Not powerful.
Just broken.
“Because your family took everything from mine.”
Lorenzo’s expression did not change.
“My family?”
She laughed quietly.
“Yes.”
She looked at him.
“You really do not know.”
The silence that followed was heavy.
“What happened twenty years ago?”
Vivienne walked slowly toward the old table nearby.
She touched the surface.
“My father and your father built everything together.”
Lorenzo said nothing.
“But your father wanted more.”
Her voice became colder.
“He wanted complete control.”
“That is a lie.”
“Is it?”
She looked at him.
“Ask yourself why my father disappeared from the company records.”
A pause.
“Ask yourself why your mother owned everything after the partnership ended.”
Lorenzo’s eyes narrowed.
“My mother exposed your father’s crimes.”
Vivienne froze.
Only for a second.
But it was enough.
“You knew?”
Lorenzo stepped forward.
“We know more than you think.”
Her expression changed.
“You found the recording.”
“Yes.”
A bitter smile appeared.
“Of course you did.”
She looked down.
“My father always said your mother was too smart.”
The mention of his mother changed Lorenzo.
“She was.”
Vivienne’s eyes became filled with anger.
“And that is why she destroyed us.”
I felt a chill.
Because there was something else.
Something deeper.
“You are blaming his mother for what your father did,” I said.
Vivienne looked at me.
“You always were the problem.”
The words were quiet.
“You saw too much.”
I did not answer.
Because I finally understood.
She did not hate me because I was a maid.
She hated me because I was a witness.
Someone who noticed things.
Someone who could connect the pieces.
Someone who was never supposed to matter.
“Tell me the truth,” Lorenzo said.
His voice became colder.
“What happened to my mother?”
Vivienne looked at him.
And for the first time...
She hesitated.
“I did not kill her.”
The words surprised everyone.
Lorenzo stared.
“What?”
“I said I did not kill her.”
She swallowed.
“But I know who did.”
The room became silent.
Even Matteo looked uncomfortable.
“Who?”
Vivienne looked toward the darkness behind them.
Then whispered:
“Your father.”
The words hit like an explosion.
“No.”
Lorenzo’s voice was quiet.
Dangerously quiet.
“You are lying.”
“I wish I was.”
She stepped closer.
“Your mother found out what he was doing.”
“What?”
“She discovered he was moving money through illegal accounts. She discovered he planned to blame everything on Antonio.”
Lorenzo stared.
“My father would never—”
“Your father was not the man you thought he was.”
The sentence cut deeper than anything else.
Because it was not just about betrayal.
It was about losing someone twice.
Once when they died.
And again when you learned who they really were.
I looked at Lorenzo.
His face was impossible to read.
But his eyes...
His eyes showed pain.
“Then why the necklace?”
I asked.
Everyone looked at me.
Vivienne became quiet.
“The pearls belonged to your mother.”
She nodded.
“But they were also where she hid proof.”
Lorenzo froze.
“What proof?”
“Documents.”
A pause.
“Evidence against both families.”
The room went silent.
“Your mother knew she might not survive.”
Vivienne looked down.
“She gave the necklace to someone she trusted.”
“Who?”
Nobody spoke.
Then Matteo stepped forward.
And everyone turned.
His face was filled with regret.
“It was me.”
Lorenzo looked at him.
The betrayal hurt more because it came from someone familiar.
“You?”
Matteo lowered his head.
“Your mother asked me to protect the evidence.”
“Then why did you help Vivienne?”
His voice was full of anger.
Matteo closed his eyes.
“Because she threatened my daughter.”
Silence.
I looked at him.
“My daughter was sick.”
His voice cracked.
“Antonio Rossi paid for her treatment years ago.”
A pause.
“And when I tried to leave, he reminded me who paid the bills.”
Lorenzo’s anger softened slightly.
Not forgiveness.
Understanding.
“I protected this family for twenty years.”
Matteo looked at him.
“I failed your mother.”
The room became quiet.
Then Vivienne spoke again.
“You still do not understand.”
Everyone looked at her.
“The evidence was never the real secret.”
Lorenzo frowned.
“What do you mean?”
She looked at him.
“The reason your mother was killed…”
A pause.
“Was because she discovered something about your birth.”
The world seemed to stop.
Lorenzo stared.
“What?”
Vivienne took a breath.
“She found documents showing that the Duca bloodline was not what everyone believed.”
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
“What are you saying?”
Vivienne’s eyes met his.
“I am saying…”
She paused.
“Your father was not your biological father.”
The silence afterward was unbearable.
Lorenzo stood completely still.
A man who had faced enemies without fear.
A man who had survived wars inside his own world.
Broken by one sentence.
I looked at him.
Not as Lorenzo Duca.
Not as the powerful man everyone feared.
But as a person whose entire identity had just been shaken.
Then Vivienne continued.
“And your mother died trying to protect you from the truth.”
The rain outside began falling harder.
The same sound as the night everything began.
The necklace.
The lies.
The missing hour.
All of it had led here.
But before anyone could speak...
Lorenzo’s phone rang.
Marco’s name appeared.
He answered.
“What?”
A pause.
His face changed.
“What do you mean Emma is gone?”
My heart stopped.
The room disappeared.
“Emma?”
Lorenzo looked at me.
And in that moment...
We both understood.
The enemy was never only Vivienne.
Someone else had been waiting.
Someone who knew exactly where to hurt us.
Someone had taken the one person who had exposed the truth from the beginning.
May you like
My daughter.
Emma.
