Chapter 4 - The Deleted Hour of Truth

The Duca mansion had never felt so quiet.
Not peaceful.
Quiet.
There was a difference.
Peace meant safety.
This silence felt like everyone inside the house was waiting for something terrible to happen.
I sat on the edge of the bed in my small room, holding a cold towel against my wrist while Emma slept beside me.
She refused to sleep alone.
Not after tonight.
Not after watching a woman try to hurt me.
Her tiny fingers were wrapped around my sleeve even while she slept.
Like she was afraid that if she let go, I would disappear.
I looked at her peaceful face and felt something break inside me.
I had spent years protecting Emma from the world.
From sadness.
From fear.
From the reality that life was not always kind.
But tonight...
The world had found her anyway.
A soft knock came from the door.
I immediately sat up.
“Who is it?”
“It’s me.”
Lorenzo.
My heart stopped for a second.
I looked at Emma.
She was still sleeping.
Slowly, I walked to the door and opened it just enough.
Lorenzo stood outside.
Without his jacket.
Without the cold expression he showed everyone else.
Just a tired man standing in a dark hallway.
“I did not want to wake her,” he whispered.
I stepped aside.
He looked at Emma first.
Not the room.
Not me.
Her.
There was something painful in his eyes.
Guilt.
“You should not have let her see that.”
The words surprised me.
I looked at him.
“You think I wanted that?”
His jaw tightened.
“No.”
A pause.
“I know you didn’t.”
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Lorenzo looked at my wrist.
“Did she hurt you before tonight?”
The question caught me off guard.
I looked away.
Because the truth was complicated.
“Clara.”
His voice became softer.
“Answer me.”
I swallowed.
“Not like tonight.”
His expression darkened.
“What does that mean?”
I hesitated.
Because once I started telling the truth...
There was no going back.
“She has been making things difficult.”
“How?”
I looked at Emma.
“She spilled tea on my hand last month and said it was an accident.”
Lorenzo’s face changed.
“She moved Emma’s toys into storage and told me the child needed discipline.”
His eyes became colder.
“She locked the kitchen door while Emma was inside because she said she was teaching her patience.”
The room became completely silent.
Lorenzo looked like he was trying to control something inside himself.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
I laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because I was tired.
“Would you have believed me?”
His eyes met mine.
The question hurt.
Because we both knew the answer.
Vivienne was the woman everyone expected him to marry.
I was the woman who cleaned his house.
The difference between us was enormous.
“I didn’t want trouble,” I said.
“You should have told me.”
I looked at him.
“Would it have changed anything?”
Lorenzo didn’t answer immediately.
And that silence hurt more than any words.
Because maybe he didn’t know.
Maybe he was not sure.
Then he looked back at Emma.
“It would have changed something.”
I followed his gaze.
“What?”
His voice lowered.
“I would have protected you.”
Those words almost made me cry.
Because I had spent so long protecting myself.
I forgot what it felt like to have someone else try.
But before I could answer, Lorenzo’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“Excuse me.”
He walked toward the hallway.
I watched him answer.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“No. Do not delete anything.”
My attention sharpened.
Delete?
Lorenzo turned slightly away.
“Check every camera from the east wing.”
Another pause.
“Start with the last twenty-four hours.”
My heartbeat increased.
He was investigating.
Finally.
After everything.
Someone was looking beyond the obvious.
When he returned, his expression was different.
More focused.
“What happened?” I asked.
He looked at me.
“The security system shows a gap.”
“How long?”
“One hour and forty-three minutes.”
My stomach dropped.
The exact time.
The time Vivienne needed.
“She knew,” I whispered.
Lorenzo studied me.
“What?”
“She knew the cameras were down.”
He remained silent.
Then he asked:
“Why?”
I looked toward the window.
Because suddenly everything connected.
The necklace.
The corridor.
The missing footage.
The timing.
“She wasn’t just trying to frame me.”
Lorenzo waited.
“She wanted something hidden.”
His eyes narrowed.
“What?”
“I don’t know.”
And that scared me.
Because I knew Vivienne.
Not completely.
But enough.
She was not someone who acted without a reason.
The necklace was only a distraction.
A beautiful, expensive distraction.
A way to make everyone look at the wrong thing.
Lorenzo received another message.
He read it.
Then his face changed.
“What?”
He looked at me.
“The camera files were not damaged.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“They were deleted.”
The room felt colder.
“By someone with access.”
My voice became quiet.
“Vivienne.”
Lorenzo did not answer.
But he didn’t deny it.
That was the first time I saw uncertainty enter his eyes.
Not about me.
About her.
The woman he trusted.
The woman he was going to marry.
A few minutes later, Lorenzo left.
He told me to lock the door.
He told me to keep Emma with me.
He told me not to worry.
But people only say “don’t worry” when there is something worth worrying about.
I stayed awake for hours.
Watching Emma sleep.
Thinking about everything I had ignored.
The small warnings.
The strange moments.
The feeling that something terrible was approaching.
Then, around three in the morning...
I heard footsteps.
Not Lorenzo’s.
Too quiet.
Too careful.
I sat up.
Emma moved beside me.
“Mommy?”
“Shh.”
The footsteps stopped outside the door.
My breathing froze.
Then a small sound.
Metal against metal.
Someone trying the lock.
My blood turned cold.
I grabbed Emma and moved away from the door.
The handle turned slowly.
Once.
Twice.
Then stopped.
Whoever was outside knew we were awake.
A few seconds passed.
Then footsteps disappeared.
I waited.
Five minutes.
Ten.
Only then did I move.
I reached for my phone.
But it was gone.
My heart dropped.
I searched the table.
The drawer.
The nightstand.
Nothing.
Someone had taken it.
And suddenly I understood.
Vivienne didn’t just want to frame me.
She wanted to remove every way I could prove the truth.
Every message.
Every photo.
Every recording.
Everything.
I looked at Emma.
Then at the empty place where my phone had been.
That was when I remembered.
Earlier that day.
Before everything happened.
I had recorded something.
Something I never thought would matter.
A conversation.
Between Vivienne...
And someone else.
My hands began shaking.
Because if she found my phone...
She would know.
She would know I had heard the truth.
The door opened suddenly.
I turned.
But it was not Vivienne.
It was Lorenzo.
His face was serious.
And in his hand...
Was my phone.
I stared.
“Where did you find that?”
He looked at the device.
Then at me.
“It was hidden inside Vivienne’s room.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
“She took it.”
A long silence.
Then Lorenzo said the words that changed everything.
“She was deleting something.”
I looked at him.
“What was on it?”
He hesitated.
And that hesitation terrified me.
Because Lorenzo Duca was not a man who hesitated.
“Clara.”
His voice became low.
“What exactly did you record?”
I stared at the phone.
At the device that might finally reveal the truth.
Then I whispered:
“A conversation.”
“Between who?”
I looked at him.
“Vivienne…”
A pause.
“And her father.”
Lorenzo’s expression changed.
“Her father?”
I nodded slowly.
“They were talking about you.”
The room became silent.
“What did they say?”
I looked toward Emma.
Then back at him.
And for the first time...
I saw fear in Lorenzo Duca’s eyes.
Because he understood.
This was never about a necklace.
It was never about me.
It was never about a servant making a mistake.
Vivienne Rossi had been hiding something much bigger.
Something that could destroy everything Lorenzo had built.
May you like
I swallowed.
“They were planning your death.”
