Chapter 7 - The Little Girl Who Saved Her Mother

The photograph stayed on the table between us.
Neither Lorenzo nor I touched it again.
It was strange how a single piece of paper could change the way you saw an entire person.
Before that night, Vivienne Rossi had been a woman who wanted power.
A woman who wanted money.
A woman who wanted Lorenzo’s empire.
But now...
She was something else.
A person connected to a secret buried twenty years ago.
A person who had entered this mansion with a plan that started long before I ever worked there.
I looked at Lorenzo.
“You knew her family?”
He remained silent.
That silence told me everything.
“Lorenzo.”
He picked up the photograph.
His fingers tightened around the edges.
“My father knew Antonio Rossi.”
I waited.
“Not as a friend.”
The room became colder.
“Then as what?”
Lorenzo looked toward the window.
“My father and Antonio were partners.”
The answer surprised me.
“Partners?”
“In business.”
A pause.
“And in things that should never have happened.”
I felt a chill.
“What things?”
Lorenzo did not answer immediately.
He was fighting something.
A memory.
A wound.
“My father died when I was twenty-three.”
I knew that part.
Everyone knew Lorenzo had inherited the Duca empire after his father’s death.
But nobody knew what happened behind those closed doors.
“Everyone said it was an accident.”
His voice lowered.
“But I never believed that.”
I looked at the photograph again.
“And you think Vivienne knows?”
“I think she knows more than she admitted.”
The pieces began connecting.
The old photograph.
The necklace.
The plan to kill Lorenzo.
The recording.
Vivienne had not simply entered his life.
She had targeted him.
But why?
Before I could ask, a small voice came from behind me.
“Mommy?”
I turned.
Emma was awake.
Her blonde curls were messy from sleep.
She rubbed her eyes while holding her stuffed rabbit.
For a moment, everything else disappeared.
The secrets.
The danger.
The lies.
There was only my daughter.
I immediately walked toward her.
“Are you okay, sweetheart?”
She nodded.
Then she looked at Lorenzo.
“Are you sad?”
The question caught him off guard.
Lorenzo Duca.
A man who could intimidate entire rooms.
A man who never showed weakness.
Stood there silently because a three-year-old child asked if he was sad.
After a moment, he lowered himself to her height.
“A little.”
Emma studied his face.
Then she hugged her rabbit.
“When I am sad, Mommy hugs me.”
Lorenzo looked at her.
“And does it help?”
Emma nodded seriously.
“Yes.”
A small pause.
“Because Mommy makes the bad feelings smaller.”
Something changed in Lorenzo’s expression.
A sadness I had never seen before.
Then Emma reached out her tiny hand.
“Your turn.”
He looked confused.
“My turn?”
She nodded.
“You need a hug.”
For a second, I thought he would refuse.
That was who Lorenzo was.
A man who built walls around himself.
A man who believed needing anyone was dangerous.
But then something unexpected happened.
He opened his arms.
Emma walked forward.
And hugged him.
I watched the most feared man in the city hold my daughter carefully, as if she was something fragile and precious.
And in that moment...
I realized something.
Lorenzo Duca was not heartless.
He was simply a man who had spent too long pretending he was.
Then his phone rang.
The moment broke.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“Marco.”
He answered.
“What happened?”
A pause.
Then his eyes moved toward me.
“What?”
My stomach tightened.
“What is it?”
Lorenzo ended the call.
“Matteo is gone.”
The room went silent.
“Gone?”
“He left the estate ten minutes ago.”
My heart sank.
“Did he run?”
Lorenzo looked at me.
“Yes.”
The answer was immediate.
“He knew we were investigating.”
The person we trusted.
The person who had protected Emma.
The person who had access to everything.
Was running.
“Do you think he helped Vivienne?”
Lorenzo looked toward the hallway.
“I think he knows the truth.”
That was somehow worse.
Because people who knew the truth were dangerous.
Especially when they were afraid.
The next few hours passed like a nightmare.
Security searched the mansion.
Every room.
Every office.
Every hidden corner.
But Matteo was gone.
And with him...
A piece of the puzzle.
Then Marco found something.
A hidden storage drive.
Inside the old administration room.
The room where the message had been sent.
Lorenzo and I watched as Marco connected it.
“There is one file.”
“What file?”
Marco looked uncomfortable.
“An archived security backup.”
The screen loaded.
A date appeared.
Twenty years earlier.
My heart began beating faster.
Lorenzo stepped closer.
“Play it.”
The footage was old.
Black and white.
Grainy.
But clear enough.
A younger version of Lorenzo’s father appeared.
Standing in the mansion.
Talking to someone.
Antonio Rossi.
I looked at Lorenzo.
He did not move.
He barely breathed.
The two men were arguing.
The audio was damaged.
But one sentence came through.
“Your daughter cannot know.”
Antonio froze.
Lorenzo leaned closer.
The video continued.
A woman entered the room.
A young woman.
Lorenzo’s mother.
Her face was full of anger.
She looked at both men.
Then she said something.
The audio cracked.
Only a few words survived.
“My son deserves the truth.”
The footage ended.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone understood one thing.
Lorenzo’s mother had discovered something.
Something that caused everything that followed.
Her death.
Vivienne’s arrival.
The murder plan.
The lies.
All connected.
Then Marco looked at another file.
“Boss.”
Lorenzo turned.
“What?”
“There is another recording.”
“From when?”
Marco looked at the screen.
“Three years ago.”
My heart stopped.
Three years.
The same year I arrived at the mansion.
The file opened.
A woman’s voice filled the room.
Older.
Weak.
But familiar.
Lorenzo froze.
Because he recognized it.
His mother.
A recording made before her death.
“My son…”
The voice trembled.
“If you are hearing this, then I was right to be afraid.”
Lorenzo’s face changed.
The impossible had happened.
His mother was speaking.
After all these years.
“I discovered what Antonio Rossi did.”
A pause.
“And I discovered what he planned to do to our family.”
The room became completely silent.
Then her voice continued.
“But the person you must fear most is not Antonio.”
A long pause.
“It is the person closest to you.”
Lorenzo looked at the screen.
The recording continued.
“She carries my pearls.”
My breath stopped.
The necklace.
The pearls.
The same necklace Vivienne used to frame me.
His mother’s voice became weaker.
“Because those pearls were never lost.”
A pause.
“They were taken.”
The audio ended.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then Lorenzo slowly looked at me.
And I knew.
The truth had finally reached him.
But it had arrived with another question.
A question that terrified all of us.
Who had taken his mother’s pearls twenty years ago?
And why had Vivienne Rossi brought them back now?
Outside the mansion, the storm continued.
May you like
But inside...
The real storm had only just begun.
