Chapter 5 - The Recording That Could Destroy an Empire

The room remained silent after my words.
“They were planning your death.”
I watched Lorenzo Duca.
I had seen him angry before.
I had seen him frustrated.
I had seen him walk through the mansion with the weight of an entire empire on his shoulders.
But I had never seen him afraid.
Not until that moment.
Not until I told him the truth.
His eyes moved from my face to the phone in his hand.
The same phone Vivienne had stolen.
The same phone she thought would disappear forever.
“What exactly did you hear?”
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
The kind of calm that came before a storm.
I sat down slowly on the edge of the bed.
Emma was still sleeping beside me, unaware that the entire world around her was changing.
“I was cleaning the west office three days ago.”
Lorenzo listened carefully.
“I was supposed to bring some documents to your study. I heard voices coming from the private lounge.”
“Vivienne?”
I nodded.
“And her father.”
Lorenzo’s jaw tightened.
“Antonio Rossi.”
I had never met him.
But I knew the name.
Everyone in Lorenzo’s world knew the name.
Antonio Rossi was a businessman with influence in places ordinary people never saw.
A man who smiled during photographs and destroyed people behind closed doors.
“What did they say?”
I looked at the phone.
“I recorded it because I thought I might need proof.”
Lorenzo looked surprised.
“You recorded them?”
I nodded.
“I did not know what they were planning. I only knew something was wrong.”
For years, I had learned one important lesson.
When powerful people did something cruel, they rarely admitted it.
They left traces.
Small mistakes.
Small pieces of truth.
And sometimes...
You had to collect those pieces before they disappeared.
Lorenzo unlocked the phone.
“Where is the recording?”
I pointed.
“Audio files.”
His fingers moved quickly.
Then he stopped.
The screen changed.
A message appeared.
The file could not be opened.
My heart sank.
“No.”
Lorenzo looked at me.
“What?”
“She must have damaged it.”
He tried again.
Nothing.
The file remained unreadable.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Lorenzo made a phone call.
“Marco.”
His voice became colder.
“I need a digital specialist here immediately.”
A pause.
“No questions.”
Another pause.
“Bring everything necessary.”
He ended the call.
I looked at him.
“You believe me?”
The question came out before I could stop it.
Lorenzo became still.
I hated that I needed to ask.
After everything.
After Emma.
After the bruises.
After the necklace.
I still needed to know.
He looked at me for a long moment.
Then he answered.
“I believe that something is wrong.”
Not the answer I wanted.
But it was honest.
And somehow, honesty mattered more.
“I should have believed you earlier.”
The words surprised me.
Lorenzo looked away.
“When I saw the necklace…”
He stopped.
His expression hardened.
“I saw evidence before I saw the person standing in front of me.”
I lowered my eyes.
“That happens often.”
His gaze returned to me.
“What do you mean?”
I smiled sadly.
“People see what they expect.”
A pause.
“They see a maid.”
The room became quiet.
Lorenzo looked uncomfortable.
Because he knew exactly what I meant.
For three years, I had walked through that mansion carrying other people’s plates.
Cleaning other people’s rooms.
Fixing problems nobody noticed.
I was invisible.
Until someone needed someone to blame.
Then suddenly...
Everyone saw me.
A knock interrupted us.
Lorenzo opened the door.
A tall man entered carrying a black case.
Marco.
I had seen him before.
He worked closely with Lorenzo.
Security.
Business.
The things people never discussed openly.
He looked at Lorenzo.
Then at me.
Then at Emma.
His expression changed slightly.
Because even he understood the seriousness of the situation.
“Boss.”
Lorenzo handed him the phone.
“Recover the audio.”
Marco looked at the damaged file.
“When was this deleted?”
“Someone tried tonight.”
Marco glanced up.
“Tonight?”
Lorenzo nodded.
Marco became serious.
“Someone accessed the phone after stealing it.”
“Yes.”
“And brought it back?”
“No.”
Lorenzo’s eyes moved toward the phone.
“I found it in Vivienne’s room.”
Marco said nothing.
He didn’t need to.
The implication was obvious.
For years, everyone inside the mansion believed Vivienne Rossi was untouchable.
Beautiful.
Elegant.
Powerful.
But now every piece of evidence was pointing toward her.
Marco connected the phone to his equipment.
Minutes passed.
Then ten.
The room was filled only with the sound of machines working.
Emma moved in her sleep.
I immediately went beside her.
Lorenzo noticed.
“You are always protecting her.”
I looked at my daughter.
“She is all I have.”
His expression softened.
“No.”
I looked at him.
“What?”
“You are what she has.”
The words stayed with me.
Because Lorenzo Duca was not a man who spoke without meaning.
Then Marco suddenly stopped.
“Boss.”
Everyone turned.
His face was serious.
“I recovered part of it.”
My heartbeat increased.
“Play it.”
Marco hesitated.
“There may be things you do not want to hear.”
Lorenzo’s voice was quiet.
“Play it.”
The room filled with static.
Then voices.
A woman.
Vivienne.
“I don't like waiting.”
My blood ran cold.
Her voice.
The same voice that had whispered threats in the corridor.
Then a man.
Antonio Rossi.
“You need patience.”
Vivienne sounded angry.
“He is becoming suspicious.”
Antonio laughed softly.
“Lorenzo?”
“Yes.”
A pause.
“He trusts too easily.”
I looked at Lorenzo.
His face became emotionless.
But I saw his hand tighten.
The recording continued.
“We cannot keep delaying.”
Antonio’s voice lowered.
“The transfer happens after the wedding.”
My stomach tightened.
Transfer?
“What transfer?” Vivienne asked.
“The accounts.”
A pause.
“Once Lorenzo is gone, everything moves to the new structure.”
The room became colder.
Lorenzo looked at Marco.
Then back at the phone.
The recording continued.
“And Clara?”
My heart stopped.
Antonio said my name.
“Clara is a problem.”
Vivienne laughed.
“She has always been a problem.”
“She knows too much.”
“She is only a maid.”
“No.”
Antonio’s voice became darker.
“She is the only person Lorenzo trusts without questioning.”
Silence.
Then Vivienne spoke.
“Then she needs to disappear.”
Emma shifted beside me.
I covered her ears even though she was still asleep.
I did not want those words anywhere near her.
Lorenzo heard everything.
Every word.
Every betrayal.
Every plan.
Then the audio stopped.
Nobody spoke.
Not even Marco.
The silence afterward was heavier than the recording itself.
Finally, Lorenzo stood.
Slowly.
Controlled.
Dangerously calm.
“Marco.”
“Yes, boss.”
“Find Antonio Rossi.”
Marco nodded.
“And Vivienne?”
Lorenzo looked toward the dark window.
Rain continued falling outside.
“She stays where she is.”
I looked at him.
“Why?”
His answer was quiet.
“Because if she realizes we know…”
He paused.
“She will run.”
A cold feeling moved through me.
Because I knew Lorenzo was right.
Vivienne was not finished.
Not yet.
Then my phone suddenly lit up.
Everyone turned.
A new message appeared.
From an unknown number.
Lorenzo picked it up.
His eyes narrowed.
“What is it?”
He did not answer immediately.
Then he showed me.
Only four words.
Four words that made my blood freeze.
I KNOW YOU HEARD US.
My breathing stopped.
Because whoever sent that message...
Was not Antonio.
Was not Vivienne.
It was someone else.
Someone inside the mansion.
Someone who knew everything.
And they were warning us.
Or threatening us.
Lorenzo looked at the screen.
Then at me.
“From now on…”
May you like
His voice became cold.
“No one in this house is trusted.”
