Chapter 8 - A Family Built From Broken Pieces

For years, Lorenzo Duca believed he understood the people around him.
He believed loyalty could be measured.
He believed enemies stood outside the gates.
He believed the walls around his mansion protected him from the world.
But that night, standing in front of an old recording of his mother’s voice, he finally understood the truth.
The greatest threats were never the ones trying to break in.
They were the ones who already had the keys.
Nobody spoke after the recording ended.
The room felt smaller.
Heavier.
Even the sound of the rain outside seemed distant.
I looked at Lorenzo.
The man who always appeared impossible to hurt was standing completely still.
His eyes remained fixed on the empty screen.
Like he was waiting for his mother’s voice to return.
Like some part of him refused to accept that the woman he lost years ago had left behind a final warning.
“Lorenzo…”
My voice was quiet.
He did not respond.
“Are you okay?”
A strange question.
Because how could someone be okay after hearing something like that?
After discovering that the person he trusted might have been connected to the darkest moment of his life?
Finally, he looked at me.
“No.”
The honesty surprised me.
Not because he admitted pain.
Because he allowed himself to.
“My entire life…”
He stopped.
Then looked back at the screen.
“I thought I knew why my mother died.”
I stayed silent.
“Everyone told me it was an accident.”
His jaw tightened.
“I spent years accepting that answer because the alternative was worse.”
“What alternative?”
“That someone I trusted took her from me.”
The room became quiet again.
I understood that kind of pain.
Not the same.
But similar.
The pain of losing someone.
The pain of never getting answers.
The pain of wondering if you could have done something differently.
Then Emma walked into the room.
Nobody had noticed she woke up.
She was holding her stuffed rabbit.
Her tiny footsteps echoed across the floor.
“Mommy?”
I turned immediately.
“What are you doing awake?”
She looked at Lorenzo.
“He looks sad again.”
I almost smiled.
Even in the middle of danger, Emma noticed emotions before anything else.
She walked toward him.
“Mr. Lorenzo?”
He looked down.
“Yes?”
“Did your mommy go away?”
The question froze him.
Because children had a way of reaching places adults avoided.
“Yes,” he finally whispered.
Emma hugged her rabbit.
“Mine went away too.”
My heart stopped.
She was talking about her father.
Daniel.
Even though she was too young to remember him clearly.
Lorenzo looked at her.
“She did?”
Emma nodded.
“My daddy.”
Her little voice became softer.
“Mommy said he loved us.”
I looked away.
Because hearing her say it still hurt.
Every time.
But then Emma continued.
“And Mommy says people who love you never really leave.”
Lorenzo stared at her.
For a moment, I saw something change.
The anger.
The suspicion.
The years of pain.
All of it softened.
Because a child who had lost someone was reminding a man who had lost someone else how to keep living.
Lorenzo lowered himself beside her.
“Your mommy is right.”
Emma smiled.
“She usually is.”
I laughed quietly.
Even Lorenzo almost smiled.
Almost.
Then Marco entered.
The moment disappeared.
“Boss.”
Lorenzo stood.
“What did you find?”
Marco looked serious.
“We searched the old family records.”
“And?”
“There is something you need to see.”
He placed a folder on the table.
Inside were documents.
Old documents.
Property transfers.
Financial records.
Photographs.
Lorenzo opened the first page.
His expression changed.
“What is this?”
Marco answered carefully.
“Records from twenty years ago.”
I stepped closer.
The documents showed a company transfer.
A business partnership.
Between the Duca family…
And the Rossi family.
But there was something strange.
A name appeared repeatedly.
Not Lorenzo.
Not Antonio.
A woman.
Lorenzo’s mother.
“Why would my mother be involved in this?”
Marco hesitated.
“Because she owned half of it.”
Lorenzo looked up.
“What?”
“The company that your father and Antonio Rossi built…”
Marco pointed at the papers.
“Was actually started by your mother.”
Silence.
That changed everything.
Everyone thought Lorenzo inherited an empire from his father.
But the truth was different.
His mother had built part of it.
And someone had taken it from her.
Lorenzo continued reading.
Then he found something.
A signature.
His hand stopped.
I noticed.
“What is it?”
He did not answer.
His eyes were fixed on the paper.
Finally, he whispered:
“She signed this before she died.”
Marco nodded.
“Yes.”
“But why?”
The room became tense.
Because whatever was written there was something Lorenzo had never known.
He turned the document toward us.
At the bottom was a sentence.
A legal statement.
A final instruction.
If anything happens to me, ownership must be transferred to my son Lorenzo Duca — not Antonio Rossi, not his family, and not any future spouse connected to them.
My stomach tightened.
Future spouse.
Connected to them.
Vivienne.
She had not entered Lorenzo’s life randomly.
She had been trying to reach what his mother protected.
The inheritance.
The power.
The empire.
The truth.
“She knew,” Lorenzo whispered.
“Your mother knew someone would try.”
Marco nodded.
“She prepared for it.”
I looked at Lorenzo.
“And Vivienne knew about the documents.”
“Yes.”
The answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
“Because she was looking for them.”
A silence followed.
Then another thought entered my mind.
“Wait.”
Both men looked at me.
“If Vivienne wanted these documents…”
I looked toward the folder.
“Why did she try to frame me with the necklace?”
Lorenzo’s eyes narrowed.
Because that was the question.
The necklace was not enough.
Not for someone like Vivienne.
She needed something bigger.
Something permanent.
Marco suddenly looked at his phone.
His face changed.
“Boss.”
“What?”
“We found Matteo.”
Everyone became still.
“Where?”
Marco looked at the screen.
“At an abandoned property outside the city.”
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
A pause.
“But he is not alone.”
Lorenzo’s expression darkened.
“Who is with him?”
Marco hesitated.
Then answered.
“Vivienne Rossi.”
My blood went cold.
“She found him?”
“No.”
Marco looked at Lorenzo.
“He found her.”
That made no sense.
Unless…
Unless Matteo had never been helping Lorenzo.
Unless he had been helping Vivienne all along.
Lorenzo grabbed his coat.
“I am going there.”
I immediately stood.
“Lorenzo.”
He stopped.
“You cannot go alone.”
His eyes met mine.
“This is not your fight.”
I looked at him.
“Isn’t it?”
He said nothing.
“She tried to kill me.”
A pause.
“She threatened my daughter.”
I stepped closer.
“And she used your mother’s necklace to destroy my life.”
My voice became stronger.
“This became my fight the moment she entered my world.”
For a moment, Lorenzo simply stared.
Then something unexpected happened.
He nodded.
“You are right.”
The words surprised me.
Because powerful men rarely admitted when someone else was right.
He looked at Emma.
Then at me.
“From now on, no more secrets.”
The promise was simple.
But it meant everything.
Because secrets were what destroyed his family.
Secrets were what allowed Vivienne to grow stronger.
Secrets were what almost killed me.
Lorenzo walked toward the door.
Then Emma grabbed his hand.
He looked down.
“Be careful.”
The seriousness on her tiny face almost broke my heart.
Lorenzo knelt.
“I will.”
She looked at him.
“Promise?”
He nodded.
“Promise.”
After he left, I watched the rain through the window.
For the first time since this nightmare began...
I felt something different.
Not safety.
Not yet.
But hope.
Because Lorenzo was no longer fighting alone.
And neither was I.
But somewhere outside the city...
Vivienne Rossi was waiting.
And she had one final secret left.
May you like
A secret that would reveal why she hated Lorenzo Duca’s family so much.
And why she had chosen me as the first person to destroy.
