Chapter 7 - The Name on the Recording

Nathan looked older.

That was Adrian's first thought.

Not dead.

Not ghostly.

Older.

Gray at the temples.

A scar through one eyebrow.

The same crooked smile he had worn at seventeen after stealing Adrian's car.

Sofia whispered, "Uncle Nathan."

Nathan heard her through the feed.

"Sofia."

Adrian stepped in front of the phone.

"Don't speak to my daughter."

Nathan smiled.

"Still issuing orders."

"You've been alive eleven years."

"Apparently."

"Why?"

"Because being Nathan Mercer was inconvenient."

Evan stood behind him.

Calm.

Clean suit.

No visible fear.

Adrian understood something.

Nathan was not sitting comfortably.

His hands were behind the chair.

Bound.

Evan had captured him too.

"You're holding your own partner?" Adrian asked.

Evan laughed.

"Partner is generous."

Nathan's smile vanished.

Adrian looked at Evan.

"You used Victor."

"Victor used everyone."

Victor cursed from the floor.

Evan ignored him.

"You used Nathan."

"Of course."

"And Elena?"

Silence.

There it was.

The question all roads had led toward.

Evan's eyes hardened.

"Bring the key."

"To what?"

"The bank box."

"It's empty."

"Then bring what Claire took."

Claire stepped into view.

"You mean the ledger?"

Evan's face changed.

Barely.

But enough.

Claire noticed.

"You don't care about the flash drive."

Evan said nothing.

"You care about the paper ledger."

Nathan started laughing.

"Evan always hated digital records."

Evan struck the back of his chair.

Nathan stopped.

Adrian's voice turned low.

"What is in the ledger?"

Nathan answered.

"Names."

"Whose?"

"Everyone Evan paid."

Evan grabbed the phone.

"One hour. Your house."

The feed ended.

Reyes stared at Adrian.

"We're not letting you walk into a hostage scene."

"They're my employees."

"And your brother."

"My brother can wait."

Sofia flinched.

Adrian corrected himself.

"My daughters cannot."

Reyes nodded.

"Good. Then we do this legally."

Adrian almost laughed.

Nothing about his life had been legal enough to deserve that sentence.

Maya arrived thirty minutes later.

She carried the ledger.

Claire had given it to her that morning.

Adrian opened it.

Elena's handwriting filled the margins.

Dates.

Payments.

Routes.

Initials.

Then one page with names.

Victor Hale.

Evan Cross.

Nathan Mercer.

Three city officials.

Two federal agents.

One banker.

And another name.

Adrian Mercer.

Sofia saw it.

"Dad."

Adrian read the entry.

A.M. — ORIGINAL FUNDS, UNKNOWN CONSENT.

Claire leaned closer.

"Unknown consent."

Maya nodded.

"Elena wasn't accusing you."

"She was tracing the source."

His old hidden accounts had seeded Evan's network.

Not intentionally.

But his secrecy created the infrastructure.

Adrian finally understood the cruelest truth.

He had not killed Elena.

But choices he made years earlier had built the road others used to reach her.

He could not erase that.

He could only decide what came next.

"Lily's trust," he said.

Maya opened another document.

"Real."

Sofia stared.

"Mom transferred the company?"

"Controlling voting rights under specific conditions."

"To us?"

"Eventually."

Adrian looked at his daughters.

For years he had believed he was protecting their inheritance.

Elena had been protecting them from his.

He almost smiled.

That sounded like her.

Maya said, "We can use the ledger to trigger warrants."

"An hour isn't enough."

"No."

"Then we go."

Reyes objected.

"We surround the mansion."

"Evan will see."

"Then we negotiate."

"He doesn't want money."

"What does he want?"

Adrian knew.

"Legitimacy."

Everyone looked at him.

"Evan doesn't want to run. He wants Mercer Logistics."

Maya understood.

"He needs you to sign."

"Exactly."

"He'll force a transfer."

"And destroy the ledger."

Adrian looked at Claire.

"Can you get into my house without using the regular entrances?"

She almost smiled.

"I clean that house."

Forty minutes later, police tactical teams surrounded the outer perimeter without entering the visible camera zones.

Adrian approached the front door alone.

No weapon.

Ledger under one arm.

The door opened.

Evan stood inside.

"Welcome home."

Adrian walked past him.

The mansion looked exactly as it had that morning.

Flowers.

Polished marble.

Warm lamps.

The illusion of safety.

Nathan and the accountants sat in the dining room.

Evan placed a contract on the table.

"Sign."

Adrian read it.

Transfer of executive authority.

Voting rights.

Operational control.

Everything.

"Then?"

"Your daughters walk away."

"They're not here."

"They don't need to be."

Adrian looked at Nathan.

"Did you kill Elena?"

Nathan's eyes shifted toward Evan.

"Answer me."

"No."

"Did you know?"

"After."

Adrian looked at Evan.

Evan smiled.

"It was an accident."

The words were too smooth.

Adrian waited.

Evan continued.

"Victor was supposed to scare her."

Victor's story.

"By sabotaging her car?"

"She was supposed to stop."

"And when she didn't?"

Evan's smile disappeared.

"That wasn't my fault."

Adrian felt rage rise.

Then Lily's voice returned to his memory.

Claire is fixing it.

He breathed.

Controlled.

Calm.

"Say it again."

Evan frowned.

"What?"

"What happened to Elena."

Nathan looked suddenly alert.

Evan glanced toward the ceiling.

He suspected recording.

"Nice try."

Adrian shrugged.

"Then sign your own confession."

"I don't need one."

"No."

Adrian placed the ledger on the table.

"You need this."

Evan's eyes locked onto it.

Adrian opened to the names.

Then he tore out the page.

Evan lunged.

Adrian stepped back.

"Careful."

Evan stopped.

"Give it to me."

"Tell me where the accountants were held."

"They're right there."

"Before tonight."

Silence.

"Tell me."

"Warehouse fourteen."

Adrian nodded.

"Who ordered Elena followed?"

Evan smiled.

"You know."

"Say it."

"Nathan."

Nathan shouted, "Liar."

Evan turned.

"You started it."

"I wanted her watched."

"You wanted her frightened."

"I didn't tell Victor to alter the restraint."

Evan's jaw tightened.

There.

Adrian saw it.

Nathan saw it.

The accountants saw it.

And hidden in the service vent above the room, Claire's small camera saw it.

Evan had just confirmed knowledge of the sabotage.

Adrian asked one final question.

"Who told Victor to do it?"

Evan looked at him.

Then laughed.

"Me."

The side doors burst open.

Police entered.

Evan reached beneath his jacket.

Claire appeared from the service corridor and slammed the door against his arm.

The weapon dropped.

Reyes tackled him.

Dante freed the accountants.

Nathan remained bound.

Adrian did not move.

Evan was handcuffed on the floor.

His eyes burned.

"You think this fixes you?"

Adrian looked at him.

"No."

Evan laughed.

"Good."

"Fixing me isn't tonight's job."

Adrian looked toward Claire.

She understood.

Protecting the girls was.

Reyes lifted Evan.

Then an officer rushed into the room.

"Detective."

"What?"

"We found another device."

"Where?"

"Upstairs."

Adrian's stomach tightened.

"What kind?"

The officer looked at him.

"A transmitter."

"Connected to what?"

"We don't know."

Then every light in the mansion went red.

Lily's voice came over the house speakers.

Recorded.

May you like

Three words.

"Daddy, come upstairs."
