Chapter 5 - Claire's Secret

"No."
Sofia looked at Adrian.
"That's him."
"It can't be."
"I saw him."
Adrian took the photograph.
Nathan had been twenty-seven when a private aircraft disappeared over the Caribbean.
No wreckage was recovered.
No bodies.
After eighteen months, he was declared legally dead.
Adrian had grieved him.
His father had never recovered.
Nathan had been reckless, funny, dangerous, brilliant.
And jealous.
Always jealous.
Their father chose Adrian to inherit control of Mercer Logistics.
Nathan received money.
Then disappeared.
Adrian looked at Claire.
"You recognized him."
She did not answer.
"Claire."
"Yes."
"You knew he was alive."
"Not until tonight."
"That's not true."
"I knew there were rumors."
"What rumors?"
"Hale Strategic once worked for a client who called himself N.M."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"And you never thought that might be Nathan Mercer?"
"There are a lot of people with those initials."
"In Chicago?"
"The client was offshore."
Sofia's patience broke.
"Stop."
Both adults looked at her.
"I am tired of people giving half-answers because they think they're protecting us."
Claire lowered her gaze.
Sofia continued.
"My mother is dead. Someone tried to take Lily. Someone locked me in a room. And now my dead uncle is apparently walking around our kitchen."
She pointed at Claire.
"If you know something, say it."
Claire looked at Adrian.
He nodded.
"Everything."
Claire sat beside the piano.
"Four years ago, I was assigned to a recovery job in Belize."
"For Nathan?"
"I don't know. We never saw the client's face."
"What were you recovering?"
"A man."
"Who?"
"Evan Cross."
Adrian stared.
"Evan?"
"He had been kidnapped."
"I never heard about that."
"It wasn't reported."
"Why?"
"Because the kidnapping wasn't about ransom."
Claire looked toward the brass key.
"They wanted information about Mercer shipping routes."
Adrian thought fast.
"Who hired the recovery?"
"A holding company registered in Panama."
"N.M.?"
"Yes."
"So Nathan rescued Evan."
"Or staged the kidnapping."
Adrian looked at her.
"Why would he?"
"To create loyalty."
That sounded like Nathan.
Not because Nathan had ever been openly cruel.
Because he understood debts.
He believed gratitude was stronger than money.
If Evan thought Nathan saved his life, Nathan could own him.
Sofia whispered, "Why would Uncle Nathan want Mom dead?"
Adrian could not answer.
Claire could.
"Maybe he didn't."
Adrian looked sharply at her.
"What does that mean?"
"The crash may have been meant to frighten Elena, not kill her."
"Her restraint was sabotaged."
"Yes."
"That's not intimidation."
"Unless someone expected the car to stop before impact."
A memory returned.
Elena's crash occurred after another vehicle cut across three lanes.
Witnesses described a black SUV.
Never found.
Adrian had assumed aggressive driving.
Claire said, "If the plan was to force Elena off the road and make the failure look like a warning—"
"It went wrong."
"Maybe."
Sofia stood.
"My mother died because powerful men were playing games."
No one contradicted her.
Lily walked to the photograph.
She touched Nathan's face.
Then she shook her head.
Adrian knelt beside her.
"What?"
Lily pointed to Nathan.
Then drew a line over his mouth.
"You don't think that's the man?"
She nodded.
"Someone who looks like him?"
She shook her head.
Claire watched carefully.
"Lily, was the man by Mom's car Nathan?"
Lily shook her head.
Adrian frowned.
"But you drew the falcon."
Lily pointed to Victor in the photograph.
Then she pointed to Nathan.
Then she drew two arrows.
Victor to Nathan.
Nathan to Evan.
A chain.
Sofia understood first.
"She's not saying Nathan was at the crash."
Lily nodded.
"She's saying they're connected."
Another nod.
Adrian felt pride and horror at once.
His silent daughter had been trying to explain an entire conspiracy with crayons.
And no one had listened because they were waiting for words.
Evelyn entered the room.
"We have company."
Dante checked the window.
Two SUVs approached.
Adrian pocketed the key.
"Back exit."
Claire stood and nearly collapsed.
Adrian caught her.
"Enough."
"I'm fine."
"You're not."
He looked at Evelyn.
"First-aid kit."
Claire shook her head.
"Later."
"Now."
For once, she obeyed.
Evelyn cleaned and rewrapped the wound.
The metal fragment had cut deep but apparently missed an artery.
Adrian crouched beside Claire.
"You took that for Lily."
"I moved."
"You knew what it was?"
"No."
"Then why?"
Claire looked at him as if the answer were obvious.
"Because it was aimed at a child."
Adrian had no response.
She had risked her life for a girl who was not hers.
He had employed her for almost a year and never once asked why she always volunteered for Lily's evening shift.
"Why do you care about her?"
Claire's eyes softened.
"Because she reminds me of someone."
"Who?"
"My sister."
Sofia listened from nearby.
"What happened to her?"
Claire hesitated.
"She stopped speaking after our father died."
Adrian understood.
"You knew how to reach Lily."
"I knew not to force her."
Lily placed her hand on Claire's shoulder.
Claire smiled.
Adrian felt a strange ache.
Not jealousy.
Regret.
His daughter had found safety in someone he had barely noticed.
That was not Claire's failure.
It was his.
Dante called from the hall.
"They're stopping."
Adrian stood.
"How many?"
"Six."
"Victor?"
"No."
"Nathan?"
"No."
Dante paused.
"Chicago police."
Adrian frowned.
"That's worse."
The police surrounded the property.
A loudspeaker came on.
"Adrian Mercer, exit the residence with your hands visible."
Sofia stared.
"What did they tell them?"
Adrian checked his phone.
A news alert appeared.
MERCER LOGISTICS CEO WANTED FOR QUESTIONING IN DISAPPEARANCE OF TWO FINANCE EXECUTIVES.
Evan and Victor had moved faster than he expected.
They had framed him publicly.
Claire looked at the story.
"They're cutting off your legal options."
"Not all of them."
Adrian called one person.
Maya Cole.
Federal prosecutor.
Former enemy.
Occasional reluctant ally.
She answered.
"Mercer."
"I need ten minutes."
"You need a lawyer."
"I need you."
"That's flattering in a deeply unpleasant way."
"Two accountants are missing."
"I know."
"I didn't take them."
"I don't know."
"My daughters are with me."
That changed her tone.
"Where?"
"Lake house."
"Police are there?"
"Yes."
"Don't run."
"I wasn't planning to."
Claire raised an eyebrow.
Adrian ignored her.
"Maya, there is a safe-deposit box connected to Elena's death."
Silence.
"Your wife?"
"Yes."
"And Victor Hale."
Longer silence.
Maya finally said, "Do not open that box without me."
"Why?"
"Because Victor Hale has been an informant for eighteen months."
Adrian nearly laughed.
"An informant against whom?"
"That is the problem."
"Against me?"
"No."
"Then who?"
Maya lowered her voice.
"Your brother."
Adrian looked at the photograph.
"Nathan is alive."
"I know."
"You knew?"
"I suspected."
"Where is he?"
"We lost him six months ago."
Sofia came closer.
Adrian asked the only question that mattered.
"Did he kill Elena?"
Maya did not answer immediately.
"We don't know."
Then pounding came from the front door.
Police.
Maya said, "Adrian, listen carefully. Someone inside federal law enforcement has been feeding Nathan information."
"Who?"
"We don't know."
Adrian looked around the room.
Police outside.
Traitors inside Mercer Logistics.
Victor compromised.
Evan compromised.
Nathan alive.
Claire bleeding.
Two daughters caught in the middle.
Then Maya said something that changed everything.
"The safe-deposit box was accessed yesterday."
Adrian gripped the brass key.
"By whom?"
"According to the bank record..."
She stopped.
"Say it."
May you like
"Claire Bennett."
Everyone looked at Claire.
