Chapter 2 - The Piece of Metal

Adrian drew his weapon before the emergency lights came on.

The service door remained closed.

The lock moved once.

Stopped.

Then moved again.

Claire pulled Lily behind the marble island.

"Stay down."

Lily obeyed.

Adrian positioned himself beside the door rather than in front of it.

"Who is it?"

No answer.

Dante's voice came through the earpiece.

"We're behind him."

"Take him alive."

A crash exploded from the rear corridor.

Sofia screamed.

Adrian grabbed the handle.

"Clear?"

"Wait."

Another impact.

Then Dante.

"Clear."

Adrian opened the kitchen-side door.

Sofia ran into him.

Seventeen years old.

Usually composed.

Usually sarcastic enough to turn fear into annoyance.

Now she clung to her father like she was seven.

He wrapped one arm around her.

"You're okay."

"No, I'm not."

"I know."

Behind her, Malik dragged a security officer through the rear doorway.

Adrian recognized him.

Peter Voss.

Night shift supervisor.

Eight years with the family.

Voss's right hand was bleeding.

The black falcon ring gleamed on one finger.

Dante removed a small electronic device from his pocket.

"Override transmitter."

Adrian looked at Voss.

"Who gave it to you?"

Voss laughed.

It was weak but defiant.

"You think I'm going to tell you?"

Adrian handed Sofia to Claire.

"Take the girls upstairs."

Claire shook her head.

"No."

Adrian stared.

"This isn't a discussion."

"The upstairs hall is compromised."

"How do you know?"

"Because I saw two men come down from there twenty minutes ago."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"You were trying to get Sofia out."

Adrian's patience thinned.

"Claire."

"I am trying to keep your daughters alive."

The room went quiet.

Claire's voice had not risen.

That made the words hit harder.

Adrian looked at the stairwell.

"Safe room?"

"Maybe."

"Maybe?"

"The security system belongs to whoever owns the override."

Adrian glanced at Voss.

"Then we take back the system."

Voss smiled.

"You still don't understand."

Adrian walked toward him.

"What don't I understand?"

"This isn't an attack on your house."

Voss's smile widened.

"It's an evacuation."

Claire's face changed.

Adrian noticed.

"What does that mean?"

Voss looked at Lily.

"Ask the maid."

Adrian turned.

Claire's fingers tightened around Lily's shoulders.

"Claire?"

She shook her head.

"He's trying to divide us."

"Then tell me why he thinks you know."

"I don't."

Voss laughed again.

"Still protecting him?"

Claire went rigid.

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"Protecting who?"

Voss said nothing.

Adrian knelt beside him.

There were many versions of Adrian Mercer.

His daughters knew the father who burned pancakes and pretended he meant to.

His employees knew the owner who remembered birthdays and fired people without raising his voice.

His competitors knew something colder.

Voss knew that version.

"Peter."

The smile faded.

"You have thirty seconds to decide whether the man who ordered this is worth what happens next."

Voss stared at him.

"Victor said you'd say something like that."

No one moved.

Adrian's gaze sharpened.

"Victor Hale?"

Voss realized too late what he had admitted.

Dante cursed.

Malik looked away.

Sofia whispered, "Uncle Victor?"

Adrian hated that word in her mouth.

Victor had never been family by blood.

But children did not measure loyalty through documents.

Victor had sat at Thanksgiving.

He had taught Sofia how to ride a bicycle.

He had given Lily a stuffed rabbit after her mother's funeral.

Adrian looked at Claire.

"Did Victor hurt you?"

"No."

"Did he order it?"

"I don't know."

"Stop telling me what you don't know."

Claire's expression hardened.

"Then stop asking the wrong questions."

Dante looked between them as though expecting lightning.

Adrian took one step closer.

"What is the right question?"

Claire pointed to the fragment in his hand.

"Why would a tracking dart be fired at Lily inside a house already covered by cameras?"

Adrian looked down.

She was right.

A tracker would be pointless if the goal were immediate harm.

Unless—

"They were marking her."

Claire nodded.

"For removal."

Sofia covered her mouth.

Adrian looked at Voss.

"Where were they taking her?"

Voss said nothing.

Adrian's phone suddenly showed one bar of service.

Then two.

The repeater was reconnecting.

His screen flooded with notifications.

Missed calls.

Encrypted messages.

Security alerts that had been delayed.

One message stood out.

VICTOR HALE: Call me immediately. Possible breach at residence.

Timestamp: eleven minutes earlier.

Adrian almost admired the nerve.

Victor was creating a record of concern.

He called.

Victor answered on the first ring.

"Adrian?"

His tone was perfect.

Shock.

Urgency.

Loyalty.

"I just got an alert. Where are you?"

"In Miami."

Claire looked at Adrian.

He raised one finger.

Victor exhaled.

"Good. Stay there."

"Why?"

"Something triggered the Chicago system."

"What kind of something?"

"I'm trying to find out."

Adrian looked at Voss.

Peter's face drained of color.

"Where are you?" Adrian asked.

"On my way to the house."

"How long?"

"Twenty minutes."

Adrian glanced at Dante.

Dante mouthed, He's lying.

"Victor."

"Yeah?"

"Don't go inside without me."

"Of course."

Adrian ended the call.

Sofia stared at him.

"Why did you lie?"

"Because he lied first."

Claire looked at Peter.

"He'll know."

"Know what?"

"That Peter failed."

Voss spat blood onto the marble.

"He already knows."

Adrian looked toward the windows.

"How?"

Peter smiled again.

"You think the cameras are only watching you?"

Adrian walked to the control panel.

He pulled it away from the wall.

Behind it, tucked inside the housing, was a second transmitter.

A tiny red light blinked.

Live.

Adrian crushed it beneath his shoe.

"Now he doesn't."

Peter started laughing.

"Too late."

Adrian crouched.

"What did he see?"

"Everything."

"How much?"

"You coming through the front door."

Claire's eyes widened.

"You said no one knew you were returning."

"No one did."

"Then someone at the airport told them."

Adrian remembered the pilot.

The driver.

The hangar crew.

Or someone monitoring his aircraft.

This was larger than one compromised house.

His organization had been penetrated at multiple levels.

Sofia sat beside Lily.

"Why would Uncle Victor want Lily?"

Adrian wished he could answer without lying.

He could not.

Claire did.

"Because she saw something."

Everyone looked at her.

Lily lowered her head.

Adrian knelt in front of his daughter.

"What did you see, sweetheart?"

No response.

He softened his voice.

"You don't have to talk."

Lily looked at Claire.

Claire nodded once.

Lily reached toward the counter.

There was a box of crayons in a drawer Claire knew well.

She took out paper.

The first lines were shaky.

A car.

A woman.

A man.

Rain.

Adrian felt the past coming toward him.

Three years earlier.

The night his wife, Elena, died.

Lily had been four.

She had been in the back seat when Elena's SUV went through a guardrail on Lake Shore Drive.

The official report said hydroplaning.

Lily survived because her child seat remained anchored.

She stopped speaking two days later.

Adrian had assumed she remembered the crash.

Maybe she remembered something else.

Lily drew another figure.

A man beside the car.

Then a bird.

Black wings.

A falcon.

Adrian stared.

Sofia whispered, "That's Victor's ring."

Claire closed her eyes.

Adrian looked at her.

"You knew."

"I suspected."

"Since when?"

"Since Lily drew it the first time."

"When was that?"

"Nine months ago."

Anger flashed through him.

"You've known for nine months?"

"I didn't know what it meant."

"You worked in my house and kept a drawing from me?"

"I kept it because every time Lily saw Victor, she stopped eating for hours."

That silenced him.

Sofia turned sharply.

"What?"

Claire looked at Adrian.

"She hid whenever he visited."

Adrian remembered.

He had interpreted it as grief.

Lily often disappeared during adult meetings.

He had never connected it to Victor.

Claire had.

Because Claire noticed.

Adrian had built a company around noticing threats and missed the fear in his own child.

The realization cut deeper than accusation.

"Where is the drawing?"

Claire pointed toward the staff room.

"In my locker."

Dante started toward the hall.

"No," Claire said.

Everyone stopped.

"What now?" Adrian demanded.

"My locker was open when I came down tonight."

"Did you leave it open?"

"No."

"Who searched it?"

"I don't know."

Peter laughed softly.

Sofia glared at him.

"Shut up."

Peter smiled at her.

"You really are your father's daughter."

Adrian stood between them.

"Don't speak to her."

Peter shrugged.

"You think Victor is the problem?"

Adrian stepped closer.

"Tell me who is."

Peter looked toward Claire.

"She hasn't told you who she used to work for."

Claire went pale.

Adrian turned.

Her face answered before she did.

"What is he talking about?"

"Nothing that matters tonight."

"It matters if armed men are shooting trackers at my daughter."

Claire slowly removed one glove.

A scar crossed her palm.

Old.

Pale.

Precise.

Adrian had seen scars like that before.

Combat medics.

Emergency surgeons.

People who worked where hands met broken metal.

"You're not a maid."

Claire looked directly at him.

"I am now."

"What were you?"

She hesitated.

Peter laughed.

"Tell him."

Claire's eyes never left Adrian.

"I worked emergency extraction."

"For whom?"

"A private security contractor."

"Which one?"

Silence.

"Claire."

"Hale Strategic."

Adrian felt the room tilt.

Victor's former company.

Before Victor came to work full-time for Mercer.

Sofia stared.

"You worked for Uncle Victor?"

Claire nodded.

"Six years ago."

Adrian looked at the woman who had lived under his roof for eleven months.

"Why did you come here?"

Her eyes moved to Lily.

"Because someone asked me to."

"Who?"

Claire's lips parted.

Before she answered, Adrian's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He stared at it.

Then answered.

No greeting.

Only breathing.

Then a woman's recorded voice.

Soft.

Familiar.

Impossible.

"Adrian, if you're hearing this, Victor knows Lily remembers."

Adrian nearly dropped the phone.

It was Elena.

His dead wife.

The recording continued.

May you like

"Don't trust anyone who tells you the crash was an accident."

Then the call disconnected.
