Chapter 3 - The Man Who Knew Every Code

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Adrian stared at the dead phone.

Sofia was crying without making a sound.

Lily had gone completely still.

Claire looked as though she had expected a bullet and received a ghost.

Adrian replayed the call in his mind.

Elena's voice.

Not close.

Not similar.

Elena.

He had listened to old videos after her death until grief turned them unbearable.

He knew every rise and pause in her speech.

"Play it again," Sofia whispered.

"I can't."

"It was Mom."

"I know."

"How?"

"I don't know."

Claire said, "A delayed dead-man recording."

Adrian looked at her.

"Explain."

"A message scheduled to release if a certain condition was met."

"What condition?"

"Maybe Victor accessing something. Maybe Lily's medical file. Maybe your return."

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"You're guessing."

"Yes."

It was the first answer from Claire that felt completely transparent.

Dante stepped closer.

"Boss, we need to move."

Adrian agreed.

The mansion was compromised.

The security network was compromised.

And Victor Hale was supposedly twenty minutes away.

"Garage."

Claire shook her head.

"No."

Adrian almost snapped.

Then stopped himself.

"Why?"

"If someone wants Lily removed, every vehicle is a choke point."

"Tunnel?"

Sofia stared.

"We have a tunnel?"

Adrian ignored her.

Claire did not.

"Apparently."

"Basement wine room. It connects to a property two blocks west."

"You have a secret tunnel under the house?"

Adrian looked at Sofia.

"We'll discuss my parenting choices later."

Despite everything, she gave a small disbelieving laugh.

It broke the tension for half a second.

They moved.

Dante and Malik escorted Peter.

Javier and Reese covered the rear.

Claire limped.

Adrian noticed.

"Can you walk?"

"Yes."

"That wasn't what I asked."

"I'm walking."

He stopped.

Without asking permission, he lifted her.

Claire stiffened.

"Put me down."

"No."

"I can move faster myself."

"You're bleeding through the bandage."

"I've had worse."

"That doesn't impress me."

Something almost like irritation crossed her face.

Good.

Anger kept people conscious.

Lily walked beside them holding Sofia's hand.

The house that had always seemed enormous suddenly felt full of corners.

Every portrait concealed a shadow.

Every hallway seemed designed for an ambush.

They reached the wine room.

Adrian entered a code into a panel hidden behind a rack.

Denied.

He tried again.

Denied.

Victor had changed it.

Dante swore.

Adrian stepped back.

"Manual release."

He removed two bottles from the lowest shelf.

Behind them was a steel latch.

He pulled.

The rack slid aside.

The tunnel smelled of concrete and dust.

"Go."

Sofia entered first with Lily.

Claire followed reluctantly after Adrian finally lowered her.

Dante pushed Peter toward the opening.

Peter suddenly stopped.

His face changed.

Not defiance.

Fear.

"No."

Adrian looked at him.

"Move."

"You don't understand."

"Apparently everyone understands more than I do tonight."

"Victor said if the tunnel opened—"

A warning light began flashing above the doorway.

Adrian's stomach dropped.

Peter shouted, "RUN!"

The steel rack slammed shut.

Separating Adrian, Claire, Sofia, Lily and Dante from the others.

A grinding sound came from behind them.

Then gas hissed through vents in the tunnel wall.

Claire grabbed Lily.

"Cover your mouths!"

Adrian kicked a maintenance panel loose.

Dante found a valve.

They fought it shut.

Sofia coughed.

"Is it poison?"

Claire smelled the air.

"Sedative."

Adrian looked at her.

"How do you know?"

"I know."

They ran.

The tunnel stretched nearly two hundred yards.

By the time they reached the western property, Sofia was dizzy.

Lily stumbled twice.

Claire's injured leg shook.

Adrian forced open the final hatch.

They emerged inside the basement of a townhouse owned through a shell company.

Emergency supplies filled a hidden cabinet.

Adrian locked the tunnel behind them.

Dante checked windows.

"Clear."

Adrian turned to Claire.

"Now."

She knew what he meant.

Her history.

Her reason for being there.

All of it.

Claire sat on the basement stairs.

"Six years ago I worked for Hale Strategic Response."

"Victor's private company."

"Yes."

"What kind of work?"

"Kidnap recovery. Emergency extraction. Protective evacuation."

"Illegal?"

"Sometimes."

Adrian almost smiled.

At least she was honest.

"Three years ago, Victor contacted me after I'd already left."

"The year Elena died."

Claire nodded.

"He offered me money to come back."

"For what?"

"He said a Mercer family member needed discreet protection."

"Elena?"

"No."

Claire looked at Lily.

Adrian's chest tightened.

"Why?"

"He wouldn't say. I refused."

"Then?"

"Two weeks later your wife's vehicle crashed."

Sofia looked sick.

Claire continued.

"I saw the report. Something bothered me. Hale Strategic had installed the supplemental restraint system in Elena's SUV."

Adrian stared.

"No."

"Yes."

"My own company handled security modifications."

"Through a subcontractor."

Adrian knew the subcontractor.

Victor had recommended them.

"What did you find?"

"The driver's restraint had been altered."

Sofia whispered, "Her seat belt?"

"Not exactly. The pretensioner."

Adrian's voice went cold.

"Sabotaged?"

Claire nodded.

"It could be made to fail during a hard impact."

"Why didn't the police find it?"

"The vehicle burned afterward."

Adrian closed his eyes.

He had stood beside the wreckage.

He had believed the fire destroyed evidence of a mechanical defect.

"What made you suspect Victor?"

"I found a purchase order for the replacement component."

"Signed by him?"

"No."

"Then who?"

Claire hesitated.

"Your operations director."

"Evan Cross."

Adrian felt another piece shift.

Evan had been his college roommate.

His first employee.

The man who helped him build Mercer Logistics into a national freight network.

"Victor and Evan?"

"I don't know."

"Three years and you still don't know?"

"I had no evidence."

"So you became my maid?"

"Not immediately."

Claire looked at Lily.

"Nine months ago, an envelope appeared at my apartment."

"From whom?"

"No return address."

"What was inside?"

"A photograph of Lily."

Adrian's face hardened.

"Someone mailed you a photograph of my child?"

"Taken in your garden."

"And?"

"On the back it said: She remembers the bird."

Adrian thought of the falcon.

Claire continued.

"I applied for a housekeeping position under my real name."

"You didn't hide who you were."

"No."

"Why?"

"I wanted to see who noticed."

"Did Victor?"

"Immediately."

"Then why did he let you stay?"

"I think he believed I was watching you."

Adrian stared.

"Why would he believe that?"

Claire looked away.

"Because once, years ago, I worked for someone else too."

"Who?"

"Elena."

Sofia inhaled sharply.

Adrian's pulse stopped.

"My wife hired you?"

"Three months before she died."

"For what?"

"To find out whether someone inside Mercer Logistics was moving money through your freight routes without your knowledge."

Adrian sat down slowly.

The traitor he had returned early to expose had not started stealing recently.

The operation had existed while Elena was alive.

"Why didn't she tell me?"

"She tried."

"When?"

"The night she died."

That hurt more than everything else.

Adrian remembered their last call.

Elena had sounded irritated.

He had been in Milwaukee negotiating a warehouse acquisition.

She had said, "Come home."

He had told her he would be back the next morning.

She had replied, "This can't wait."

He had said it would have to.

That was the last real conversation they had.

Claire watched him.

"I think she planned to show you what she had found."

"What did she find?"

"A hidden ledger."

"Where?"

"I don't know."

"You worked for her."

"I was supposed to meet her the next morning."

"But she died."

"Yes."

Sofia began crying again.

Adrian looked at his daughter.

"I'm sorry."

"For what?"

"For not knowing."

She wiped her face angrily.

"You didn't know because everyone lied to you."

Claire did not look convinced.

Neither was Adrian.

He had been powerful enough to terrify half the city and too distracted to listen when his wife told him to come home.

Power suddenly seemed like a poor excuse for blindness.

Dante moved from the window.

"Car approaching."

Adrian stood.

"Victor?"

"Black SUV. No plates."

Adrian checked the basement camera.

A vehicle stopped outside.

One man exited.

Evan Cross.

Adrian almost laughed.

Of course.

His operations director walked to the townhouse door as calmly as though arriving for dinner.

He pressed the bell.

No one moved.

Then Adrian's phone rang.

Evan.

Adrian answered.

"Where are you?"

Evan sounded breathless.

"I've been trying to reach you. Victor's gone rogue."

Adrian watched him on the monitor.

"How do you know?"

"I found transfers. Equipment orders. He used Mercer accounts."

"Where are you now?"

A pause.

"At headquarters."

Adrian looked at the screen.

Evan stood twelve feet above him.

Lying without hesitation.

Adrian said, "Stay there."

"I will."

"Don't contact Victor."

"Already blocked him."

Adrian ended the call.

Claire whispered, "He knows we're here."

"Maybe."

"No."

She pointed at the screen.

Evan wasn't looking at the front door anymore.

He was staring directly at the hidden basement camera.

Then he smiled.

Adrian's phone lit again.

Not a call.

A text.

EVAN CROSS: You always did choose the tunnel.

A second message appeared.

EVAN CROSS: Open the door, Adrian.

May you like

A third followed.

EVAN CROSS: Or I'll tell Sofia what her mother discovered about you.
