Chapter 4 - What Sofia Saw

Sofia read the message over Adrian's shoulder.

"What did Mom discover about you?"

Adrian locked the phone.

"Nothing that man says tonight deserves your trust."

"That's not an answer."

"No."

Sofia stared at him.

"Then answer."

There were times when Adrian still saw the child who used to fall asleep against his shoulder.

This was not one of them.

She was seventeen.

Old enough to understand betrayal.

Old enough to know adults could love someone and still fail them.

Adrian owed her truth.

"I moved money."

Sofia's eyes widened.

"For what?"

"Years ago, before Mercer Logistics became legitimate enough for accountants to use words like compliance without laughing, I hid revenue."

Claire listened silently.

"From Mom?"

"From everybody."

"Why?"

"To protect the company."

Sofia folded her arms.

"That's what people say when they mean to protect themselves."

Adrian accepted the hit.

"Sometimes."

"Was Mom investigating you?"

"Possibly."

Claire interrupted.

"No."

They turned.

"Elena knew about the old accounts."

Adrian stared.

"How?"

"She showed me copies."

Sofia looked from one adult to the other.

"Then what was she investigating?"

Claire answered carefully.

"New transfers using the same structure."

"Someone made them look like Dad's?"

"Yes."

Adrian understood.

Evan had taken a weakness from Adrian's past and used it as camouflage.

If the transfers were ever discovered, they would appear to be a continuation of Adrian's own illegal bookkeeping.

Elena had recognized the pattern.

She had known he was no longer running those accounts.

That was why she hired Claire.

Evan's leverage was not that Elena uncovered Adrian's betrayal.

It was that Adrian's past gave Evan a perfect place to hide his own.

A pounding sound came from upstairs.

Evan.

"Adrian!"

Dante checked his weapon.

"Let me handle him."

"No."

Adrian climbed two steps.

Claire grabbed his sleeve.

"He's not alone."

"How do you know?"

"Because men like Evan never knock on doors alone."

"You seem to know a lot about men like Evan."

"I used to rescue people from them."

Another knock.

Then Evan's voice.

"I know you're down there."

Sofia whispered, "What does he want?"

Adrian looked at Lily.

"Her."

Claire nodded.

"Or what she remembers."

Lily pulled a folded sheet of paper from her pocket.

The falcon drawing.

She pointed to the man beside the car.

Then she drew another shape.

A square.

Inside it, numbers.

Adrian crouched.

"What is that?"

Lily wrote slowly.

Claire stared.

"Could be a code."

Adrian knew it.

"Elena's storage box."

Sofia blinked.

"Mom had a storage box?"

"At the bank."

"What's inside?"

"I don't know."

After Elena died, Adrian had closed most of her private accounts.

One safe-deposit box could not be opened because the key was missing.

The bank required a probate order.

Adrian had been drowning in grief and business chaos.

He never returned.

Lily tapped the number again.

Then pointed to herself.

"You went there with Mom?" Adrian asked.

Lily nodded.

Sofia leaned closer.

"Before the crash?"

Another nod.

Claire looked at Adrian.

"That's what they want."

"The box."

"Maybe Lily knows where the key is."

A loud impact shook the front door upstairs.

Dante raised his weapon.

"They're coming in."

Adrian grabbed Lily's paper.

"Back tunnel."

Claire shook her head.

"Gas."

"Then another exit."

"There is a coal chute," Sofia said.

Everyone looked at her.

"What?"

She shrugged nervously.

"I used to sneak out."

Adrian stared.

"Excuse me?"

"Not the time."

For once, he agreed.

Sofia led them through a storage room.

Behind stacked wine crates was a narrow iron hatch.

Adrian would discuss architectural secrets and teenage behavior if they survived.

The chute opened into an alley.

Dante went first.

Claire followed with Lily.

Sofia squeezed through.

Adrian went last.

Above them, the basement door splintered.

They emerged behind a row of townhouses.

A black sedan waited at the corner.

Dante raised his weapon.

The driver's window lowered.

Mrs. Evelyn Park, Adrian's sixty-two-year-old estate manager, leaned across the passenger seat.

"Are you getting in or standing there?"

Adrian blinked.

"Evelyn?"

"Claire texted me from the laundry terminal before the network died."

Adrian looked at Claire.

"You contacted her?"

"I needed someone Victor didn't consider dangerous."

Evelyn frowned.

"I'll decide whether that's insulting later."

They piled into the sedan.

Evelyn drove.

"Where?"

"The bank."

Dante said, "At midnight?"

Adrian looked at the paper.

"Not the bank."

He knew where Elena had kept the key.

Or at least where she once hid things she never wanted him to find.

They drove south toward the old Mercer lake house.

It had been empty since Elena's death.

Adrian had not stepped inside in three years.

Neither had the girls.

Sofia stared out the window.

"Why there?"

"Your mother had a piano."

Sofia looked at him.

"I know."

"She used to hide things under the lowest A key."

"Why?"

"Because she knew I couldn't play."

For the first time that night, Sofia smiled.

They reached the house twenty-eight minutes later.

No lights.

No cars.

Dante entered first.

Clear.

The old rooms smelled closed.

Photographs remained where Elena had placed them.

Lily stopped at the doorway.

Her breathing changed.

Claire knelt.

"You don't have to go in."

Lily looked at Adrian.

Then entered.

The piano stood in the sitting room.

Adrian opened the lid.

Pressed the lowest A.

Nothing.

He examined the key.

Removable.

Beneath it was a tiny brass key.

And a note.

Sofia unfolded it.

Elena's handwriting.

If Lily remembers, believe her.

Adrian sat down.

Those six words destroyed the last part of him still hoping for coincidence.

Sofia turned the note over.

There was more.

The falcon is not the only bird.

Claire inhaled sharply.

"What does that mean?"

Adrian did not know.

Dante's phone buzzed.

Service had returned.

A Mercer security alert.

He read it.

Then went pale.

"Boss."

"What?"

"Victor just issued a company-wide directive."

"On whose authority?"

"Yours."

Adrian took the phone.

His own digital signature appeared beneath the order.

SECURITY EMERGENCY. ADRIAN MERCER COMPROMISED. DETAIN ALL PERSONS TRAVELING WITH HIM.

Evan and Victor had effectively turned Adrian's own organization against him.

Then Sofia whispered.

"Dad."

She was staring at an old family photograph.

Adrian followed her gaze.

The picture had been taken at Lily's first birthday.

Adrian.

Elena.

Sofia.

Baby Lily.

Victor.

Evan.

And behind them, almost invisible near the garden doors, another man.

He wore a lapel pin.

Not a falcon.

An eagle.

Sofia pointed to him.

"I saw him tonight."

Adrian's blood ran cold.

"Where?"

"In the kitchen before Claire locked me in."

Claire stepped closer.

"Who is he?"

Adrian stared at the face.

He knew exactly who it was.

His younger brother.

May you like

Nathan Mercer.

The brother who had supposedly died overseas eleven years ago.
