Chapter 7 - The Last War for Nora and Their Child

Adrian Vale had spent years studying powerful men.

He knew their habits.

Their fears.

Their weaknesses.

Every person in a position of power had something they protected more than their own life.

For some men, it was money.

For others, it was reputation.

For Victor Castiglione, it was always control.

At least, that was what Adrian believed.

Until Nora Hayes walked back into Victor's life.

Until Victor changed.

And that was the one thing Adrian never expected.

A man like Victor was supposed to become more ruthless when he had something to lose.

Instead, he became more human.

And that made him far more dangerous.

The first sign that something was wrong came three days after Nora returned to Victor's protection.

The security around the clinic had doubled.

The doctors had changed schedules.

Every vehicle entering the area was checked.

Victor had transformed the underground facility into a fortress.

But Nora noticed something else.

He was different.

The old Victor would have disappeared for hours.

He would have been buried in meetings, orders, and plans.

The new Victor stayed close.

He ate meals beside her.

He listened when she talked.

He learned the small details he had missed during the months apart.

Like how she hated hospital coffee.

Like how their son moved more when she listened to music.

Like how she still cried during emotional movies even when she pretended she didn't.

For the first time, Nora saw the man beneath the reputation.

And that frightened her.

Because loving Victor again felt easier than she wanted to admit.

"You're staring."

Victor looked up from the paperwork in his hand.

Nora smiled slightly.

"I was wondering if you are actually Victor Castiglione."

A faint smile appeared.

"Unfortunately, yes."

She laughed softly.

The sound immediately changed the room.

Victor stopped.

Because he had missed that sound more than he realized.

"What?"

Nora noticed.

"Nothing."

"Victor."

He looked at her.

"I forgot how much I missed hearing you laugh."

The honesty caught her off guard.

For years, Victor had hidden behind silence.

Now he was giving her pieces of himself.

Pieces he had never given anyone.

"I missed you too."

The words came quietly.

But they changed everything.

That evening, Tommy arrived with the information Victor had been waiting for.

The meeting happened in a private room away from Nora.

Not because Victor wanted to hide things.

Because he wanted to protect the peace she had finally found.

Tommy placed a folder on the table.

"We found the connection."

Victor opened it.

Inside were financial records.

Communication logs.

Photographs.

And one name.

Marcus Bellini.

Victor stared at the page.

Marcus had been with the organization for twelve years.

Not a soldier.

Not a leader.

Someone who handled logistics.

Someone trusted enough to know schedules.

Routes.

Information.

"How long?"

Tommy answered carefully.

"We don't know."

Victor continued reading.

"He gave Adrian information about Nora."

"Yes."

A long silence followed.

Victor's face remained calm.

But Tommy knew him.

He knew the calm was more dangerous than anger.

"Why?"

Tommy asked.

Victor closed the folder.

"Fear."

Tommy frowned.

"Fear?"

"Adrian promised him something."

Victor looked at the documents.

"Money. Protection. Power."

A pause.

"The usual things weak men want."

Tommy waited.

"What do we do?"

Victor stood.

The answer came immediately.

"We bring him in."

Marcus Bellini was found two hours later.

He did not run.

That was the first mistake.

He sat inside a private office, surrounded by security, believing he was still untouchable.

When Victor entered, Marcus immediately stood.

"Boss."

Victor looked around.

No emotion.

No anger.

Just disappointment.

And somehow that was worse.

"I didn't know."

Marcus said quickly.

Victor said nothing.

"I swear, I didn't know she would get hurt."

The room became silent.

Victor walked closer.

"You knew about Nora."

Marcus swallowed.

"I knew Adrian was interested."

"And you said nothing."

"I was trying to protect myself."

Victor stared at him.

There it was.

The truth.

Not loyalty.

Not regret.

Self-preservation.

"You sold my family because you were afraid."

Marcus looked down.

"I made a mistake."

Victor leaned forward slightly.

"No."

His voice was quiet.

"You made a choice."

Those words crushed Marcus more than anger would have.

Victor turned away.

"Where is Adrian?"

Marcus hesitated.

Victor stopped.

That hesitation gave him the answer.

"You know."

Marcus closed his eyes.

"He has a second location."

"Where?"

Marcus finally spoke.

"Old Castiglione warehouse by the river."

Victor's expression changed.

Because that place mattered.

It was where his father built the first part of the family business.

A place filled with history.

A place Adrian knew would affect him.

"He wants you there."

Victor understood.

Of course he did.

Adrian didn't just want to kill him.

He wanted to make it personal.

The plan was simple.

Too simple.

Which meant it was dangerous.

Victor knew Adrian well enough to understand.

A trap was always hidden behind an obvious path.

"You cannot go alone."

Tommy said.

Victor adjusted his jacket.

"I know."

"Then why does it feel like you are planning to?"

Victor looked at him.

Because Tommy knew him too well.

Victor had spent his life solving problems himself.

But not anymore.

"I have something to lose now."

Tommy became quiet.

That sentence meant more than anything.

Before Nora, Victor believed his life belonged to the empire.

Now he knew it belonged to something else.

A family.

Before leaving, Victor went to Nora.

She immediately noticed something.

"You are going somewhere."

It wasn't a question.

Victor sat beside her.

"I need to handle something."

Nora studied his face.

"Adrian."

He nodded.

Fear appeared in her eyes.

Not for herself.

For him.

"Victor, don't become the person he wants you to be."

He looked at her.

"What if I already am?"

Nora reached for his hand.

"Then I wouldn't be here."

The words stopped him.

"You think I don't know who you are?"

She squeezed his fingers.

"I know."

A pause.

"I know what you have done."

Victor looked away.

"And?"

"And I know who you are when nobody is watching."

That was the difference.

The world saw the monster.

Nora saw the man.

"You came back for me."

Her voice softened.

"You chose me."

Victor looked at their joined hands.

"I should have chosen you from the beginning."

Nora shook her head.

"Then choose us now."

Those words stayed with him.

Choose us.

Not revenge.

Not anger.

Not the empire.

Us.

Victor leaned forward and kissed her forehead.

"I will come back."

Nora looked at him.

"You better."

A small smile appeared.

"Because our son still needs to meet his father."

For the first time in years, Victor allowed himself to imagine the future.

A child.

A home.

A life beyond fear.

Then he walked away.

The old warehouse stood near the river, surrounded by darkness.

Rain began falling again.

Almost exactly like the night he found Nora.

Victor stepped inside.

The doors closed behind him.

"Victor."

Adrian's voice echoed through the building.

Victor looked up.

Adrian Vale stepped from the shadows.

Older.

Calmer.

Still smiling.

"I wondered when you would come."

Victor stared at him.

"You hurt her."

Adrian smiled.

"That is all you have to say?"

Victor moved forward.

"You touched my family."

Adrian laughed softly.

"There it is."

"What?"

"The old Victor."

Adrian walked closer.

"The man who thinks violence solves everything."

Victor remained still.

"You don't understand me."

"No?"

Adrian smiled.

"You were powerful because you had nothing to lose."

A pause.

"Now you have Nora."

Another pause.

"And a child."

Victor's expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Adrian noticed.

"You see?"

Adrian whispered.

"I was right."

"You are wrong."

Adrian frowned.

Victor stepped closer.

"Having something to protect doesn't make me weak."

The room became silent.

"It makes me impossible to stop."

For the first time, Adrian's smile disappeared.

Because he realized something.

He had spent months trying to find Victor's weakness.

But Nora was not his weakness.

She was the reason Victor finally had a reason to win.

Then the lights went out.

A single sound echoed through the warehouse.

May you like

A gunshot.

And everything changed.
